I just wanna say I loveee this question. Religion and OBX together is chef kiss.

I have mixed feelings about if Rafe would be religious. The thing that sticks out to me is that he didn’t seem moved or worried by burning the cross at all unlike Barry, which makes me think he isn’t a believer. Nonetheless I love to imagine him having kind of a deeply strained relationship with religion (just because I love characters with deep religious guilt and trauma lmao)

On the other hand I can see him being the type of guy who very clearly thinks that religion is bullshit and stupid and has to let everyone knows that he thinks that, but deep down it would go deeper than that. I see the Cameron’s as the type of family who would go to church for holidays and occasionally for sunday mass, so Rafe would probably have had early exposure to christianity. As a child I can see him trying to actively participate in the christian faith, and maybe even end up fully embracing the belief in God. Rafe is insecure and seeking fatherly validation, so knowing how crazy he is I can see it ending up with Rafe viewing God as some kind of father figure. It’s his way of filling the void caused by his lack of love and affection from his real father. I mean the father is apart of the trinity, and Rafe absolutely projects his father onto his understanding of God.

He wouldn’t be loud about it, but during the most difficult times he would turn to God and ask him for clarity. I don’t see this relationship lasting long at all though. Eventually as he gets older and life gets harder he would probably feel let down by God and lose faith, which is where the whole “religion is bullshit” thing comes from. I think even with this the whole religious part of him wouldn’t be completely good gone. He might even pray when things get super hard.
