I appreciate those people who are just genuinely nice. Like their mindset is instead of making others miserable, they give people tools to better themselves because why not. Thanks for putting that good energy out into the universe.
I have been saving this since last year. Happy Earth Day everyone.
literally has been in my queue for an entire year. you just can’t miss reblogging.
No im not doing it i dont care
Can anyone explain why this sucks so much. Like I thought I would love it because I don’t like social interaction and like being able to work in a way that actually helps me (ex: being able to listen to music) but it’s the worst thing so far and I’m not getting anything done.
@actslikeacat Most people with ADHD thrive on structure and compartmentalization, and with distance learning, that isn’t a thing. We’re in the same place for every class AND extracurricular, and there’s no physical transition to help our brains shift from one thing to the next. Basically, we’ve lost our anchor points and we can’t slow ourselves down or steer our brains in the directions we want them to go. Distance learning has introduced a legitimate accessibility barrier for a SIGNIFICANT portion of the population.
It's not just structure - it's EXTERNALLY IMPOSED structure. Trying to give ourselves structure is like trying to bail out the Titanic with a bucket. All the advice for studying/working from home right now is like 'make sure you give yourself a schedule and stick to it', and for a lot of us that is just not something we can *do*.
All the adderall in the world won't help us stick to an internally motivated structure.
I'm not even in school anymore and this is a fucking mood. It's just as hard to deal with as an adult and if anyone has any advice we'd really appreciate it.
Group sessions with friends online at specific times can be helpful, and I don’t mean “dick around and chat with friends on discord”, I mean having a set group of people you meet with virtually on work/school days, preferably at the same time each day, and you all hold each other accountable to show up and get shit done.
Cause that’s the thing about ADHD, obligation, particularly social obligation can be a huge driving factor in why we do things because we’re scared of letting people down. Even if you’re all working on separate things it can work, and if you have to mute them, just knowing someone else is there can help with the feeling of being held accountable. It also means when it’s time to take structured breaks (which you should try to do every few hours) there are people there to talk to and relax with and remind you to do things like eat, drink and y’know, stop fixating and go to the bathroom because you haven’t moved in 8 hours.
Another thing you can try doing is create a shared google doc spreadsheet with your goals for the day (I’d say the week, but sometimes the smaller the goal, the better) where everyone puts in the things they need to do, and they get ticked off in virtual realtime as and when things get done.
To give you an example, it might look like this:
I’ve already sorted through my to-read-pile (tbr), so that means I get to put a line through it like this
This kind of thing obviously won't work for everyone and sometimes it’s not enough enforced structure (it doesn’t always work for me either*), but for those of us who crave and thrive on structure and accountability, this can be a good way to try and mimic it in the interim, while also allowing us the things we know would help us to thrive in a more structured environment i.e. music
So, yeah. I dunno if that’ll help anyone, but I hope it might!
*I tried doing this with friends last year and it didn’t really work until my ADHD therapist started asking for weekly reports on what I’d done. And yeah, sure, I could lie to her and say I got all my tasks done, but how does that benefit me? It doesn’t, it just attributes to the general feeling of background panic that accompanies life with ADHD because you know you’ve forgotten something but you’re never sure what.
