The Air Down There
Here I am again. Â Another American Airlines flight on a Friday afternoon headed home from a week with clients discussing their plans for aggressive global expansion and where this work will be taking me and others from U30 in the next 12 months. Â The flight attendant comes over the PA one last time to make sure seat backs are up and tray tables are stowed. Â I put away my laptop, gratefully forced to stop working. Â Itâs the one time of the day I really just sit back and think. Â A week in review of sorts.
I find myself thinking back to this weekâs trips â two to Wisconsin, one to Finland; two parts business...
What do you see when you look at this picture?
I see a story.
After a full day of analytics, running numbers and data crunching at U30, I arrive home and head to the basement where I flick on the 2 LED lights that illuminate my woodshop. I head over to the neatly stacked pile of old barn wood I collected from a farmer who was going to burn this âpile of junkâ because he didnât know what to do with it. After decades of sun and rain and wind and snow, the 1x10 boards have a grey/green weathered patina filled with rawness and years of dirt and grime that come with a life on the farm...
A lesson from gymnastics: âNormalâ is overrated.
Success depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice, how much you are willing to alter your everyday life for a particular goal. â BĂŠla KĂĄrolyi
Every four years when the Summer Games finally arrive, like many people, I get very excited about the gymnastics competition. Not just excited, but almost a little nervous â as if I myself am preparing to compete on the worldâs biggest stage! No, Iâm not delusional. In my 30s and positively ancient by gymnast standards, the prospect is ludicrous. There was, however, a time when the dream of Olympic competition was a real one for me, and every four years, I find myself reflecting on the early years of my life when gymnastics was at the center of it all...
Consumer research is a lot like theater. But with less applause.
My combination of a Bachelor of Music in Musical Theater Performance and an MBA with a Marketing focus has raised a lot of eyebrows. I myself used to shrug self-deprecatingly and say âI know, it doesnât make much senseâ. But what Iâve learned during my 11 years doing consumer research with U30 Group is that it actually makes a lot of sense. Hereâs why:

âAlways stay humble and kindââŚTim McGraw
Living in Nashville, Iâm always surrounded by country music and lyrics, but I never thought this Tim McGraw lyric would come to life the way it did for me last year. One day early in 2015, I arrived home to find my 22-year-old daughter talking with a friend I hadnât met before. She was offering to give him a ride to the homeless shelter. Â At first, I thought they were joking. Then I heard his story...
An Unexpected Visit
As researchers, weâre trained to think on our feet and anticipate the unexpected because, invariably, the unexpected will happen. We had one of these moments quite recently, so let me share a story of an unexpected guest to our office. Hope you donât mind the Christmas-in-July feel to this story, but for our guest, Christmas really did come early...
Elders are a treasure trove of cool stories, but we probably havenât heard them - because we havenât asked.
This Thanksgiving, join StoryCorpsâ The Great Listen, and help record the voices of a generation. Go beyond small talk and ask your elders the questions that matter most. What was your first memory? What was your favorite game to play as a child? Who was your first love? What was the hardest part of growing up? Â
After the turkey, grab a loved one, sit back, and start talking. And donât forget to press record!

Whipped Topping Taste Evaluation? Yum!!!
Who doesnât love eating ice cream at the office on a Friday afternoon?
We recently started working with a GREAT new client. Â They make whipped topping. Â And it goes on yummy things! Â
Itâs not like weâd never had it before â heck everybodyâs had it â but, like good researchers, one recent Friday afternoon before we started the consumer phase of our work, we decided to do some hands-on research ourselves.  Strictly for research purposesâŚ.
Weâll do just about anything to help our clients get smarter about their consumers. Â In this case we stretched out brains (and our stomachs!) to better understand what consumers were experiencing!
