The Time War doesn’t define the Doctor. It was a device to reintroduce the show with less baggage and restore some mystery, as well as a sort of in-universe manifestation of the wound that was the show’s cancelation. It had its time. Pretty much every character beat worth getting out of it had been done. And there’s really no better time to change it up than the fiftieth anniversary.

That’s the thing about Doctor Who. It changes and reinvents itself to continually be something new. That’s why it keeps on going.
