I just realized itās Autism Awareness Month, and as an autistic adult here are a few things you should know about life with autism.
- I am not diseased, I have a neurological condition and yes there is a difference.
- Certain things are harder for me, but thereās also a great deal I excel at that people without autism donāt.
- Autism SpeaksĀ is a horrible organization.
- Calling yourself supermom for just doing your job as a parent or otherwise trying to pat yourself on the back for showing us basic human decency is annoying and dehumanizing.
- I donāt want a cure for whatās simply running on a different software from you and I would say this is true for a majority of people with autism.
- Self-diagnosis isnāt valid.
- Our IQs arenāt either genius or severely impaired, many people with autism have an IQ that is completely ordinary, slightly above or slightly below.
- Vaccinate your damn kids and quit whining you canāt get autism from a vaccination.
- While autism can affect people very differently there are many with it who are almost identical in characteristics.
- You are born with autism and will always be autistic.
- People with autism can have jobs, drive, like sex, are good parents, get married, own houses, etc.
- I like who I am and donāt need you to tell me Iām wrong.
