I have posted this chart before and I will post it again because YES, they absolutely have similarities and the whole Kira squad surrounding Light thematically lives off the way they compare and contrast.

Though we don’t know a whole lot about Takada’s personal life, we can reasonably infer that she is Light’s thematic counterpart. They are golden boy and golden girl of the upper middle class and the ways they differ are enforced by gendered upbringing more than anything.

Both of them have spent their lives being held up on a pedestal for their intellect and beauty but which one was pointed out more differs. Light is smarter by some measure and also a guy, so for Light it’s been ‘Light is so intelligent and skilled (and also handsome)’ while for Takada (who is still intensely intelligent to be in To-Oh) it’s been ‘Kiyomi is so gorgeous and refined (and also smart)’. 

In a way, the lack of backstory for Takada just serves to pronounce the ‘golden boy/girl’ dichotomy more. In absence of other explanations, we simply know Kiyomi as a person who hits the Light checklist: ‘ostensibly upper middle class, strong opinions on social ills, mini celebrity at To-Oh, assertive about chasing their ambitious career goals’. Maybe she also has parents working in law enforcement? Certainly, she is also a sheltered kid with big naive ideas on how to improve the world.

But despite all they share in common, Takada is belittled for it every step of the way by the narrative and by characters alike. Ohba did not set out to write a critique of how strongly gendered upbringing affects one’s life, he just wrote based on his own inherent sexism and... still achieved that, just by being so sexist that is sticks out to an almost comical degree.

Rhaena with Sheepstealer is a complete different thing however. I'm sad that they cut the the taming of the dragon through befriending it (Nettles bringing Sheepstealer sheep and gaining his trust in f&b), but I'm glad that they stuck with the consequences of it. While dragonriders having no true controll over the dragons is a major theme of hotd and they love to put things down as accidents a bit too much, I didn't mind it with Rhaena and Sheepstealer, because it makes sense. Rhaena seizes the dragon and then directly rides him into battle in an insane display of hybris, because she is so desprate to no longer feel useless. She finally has a dragon now! She's finally a real Targaryen! Maybe her dad will finally love her? But instead Sheepstealer, the untrained, wild dragon, wrecks havoc on both enemies and allies and it nicely contrasts Baela and Moondancer, who have known each other and trained with each other for years.
