as heartbreaking as the shules breakup is, I can't even be mad at either of them
of course shawn thought about telling her he wasn't psychic before, but then they were together, which is all he's wanted for literal years, and he thought telling her would be the one thing that drove her away for good, and hey, he's kept up the lie for this long, right? he had time, right?
and of course juliet felt betrayed to find out he'd lied about it. he said he was psychic on the same polygraph where he told their friends he loved her, and both came up as the truth. if he was lying about one, how could she possibly know he wasn't lying about the other, when even a polygraph was useless on him? she's seen him go undercover and craft an alias. is that all their relationship was? another means to an end?
shawn has never lied about what he feels for juliet, but juliet doesn't know what to think anymore. she values honesty, and to find out such a huge thing about the man she's in a relationship and lives with was all a lie was a betrayal. meanwhile shawn kept up the lie because he couldn't do his job and help people otherwise because no one would believe what he said he knew if they thought he just remembered stuff really well.
And that isnβt even mentioning that her dad is a conman. And that is what Shawn did, he conned everyone.
It reminds me of that thing of how sometimes it doesnβt matter how much you try to do the right thing and not to hurt the people you love it is kind of inevitable.
I'm gonna make a hot take about BoJack Horseman in 2026.
People rightfully latch onto Kaleidoscope as the turning point where we see the show is willing to go places traditional narratives wouldn't, specifically attitudes around forgiveness and the scene in which BoJack apologizes to Herb and Herb refuses to forgive him.
Rarely do we see media acknowledge that harm can be done that can't be fixed, that even if you're willing to humble yourself and reach out to the person you've harmed with an apology, that doesn't always mean forgiveness and a perfect tidy resolution.
But I think a lot of fans get as far as "You don't owe people forgiveness just because they apologize to you" and stop there. These are the same fans who somehow manage to read the whole show as being about the existence of bad people who can't and shouldn't be redeemed.
When it seems pretty clear to me that the Kaleidoscope scene was setting the stage for what the rest of the show would explore: how do you move forward, try to do and be better, even when you know you have done things that caused harm and those you harmed don't (or can't) forgive you? Even if you can't be absolved for your past, how can you build a better future?

Absolutely! 10/10 No notes on the show. I would recommend starting with a few random episodes in season 3 or 4 or 5 ⦠or 6 or 7 or 8⦠or literally any episode⦠then going back and watching through from the start - But maybe that is just because that is how I like to watch shows.
I hate being recommended shows so I try not to do it too much but also it is MASH.

i love the relationship between shawn and henry because i see so much of myself and my mother in it. you have one parent who's really doing the work of raising the kid despite the other's physical presence, but that one parent doesn't do emotions well at all. and the love is there. holy shit, is the love there. and the parent is disappointed in you for all the things it's easy to be disappointed at you about, but you can tell they see the aspects you far surpassed them in, and they see it and they feel a pride that they don't know how to express, but when you stare at it you can still see it there, even when you tell them the good news and they have a sarcastic remark. and oh they may not want to know the details of every little thing you do, or maybe even the things that are big to you, but want you to have a life and they will keep being there and showing up to make sure you have it, that you get to have those experiences they don't really care to hear about. and in the meantime what's the other parent doing? i love my mom fiercely and she's told me outright that no matter what the situation, she will drive over and rescue me from it, even if i'm getting a vicious lecture the entire drive back. i see that dynamic in shawn and henry. and maybe it's one of those things where you had to really have that kinda parent growing up to understand it. i can't be certain. they teach you hard lessons as a kid because they hope it'll make you the greatest you could be in the long run. and sometimes it does. not every lesson. but a lot of them. maybe mostly the ones you don't remember as well.
That is beautiful, thank you so much for sharing something so personal. What you say here is something I love about any sort of media and fandom especially, it is that we can all relate to aspects of characters and relationships in completely different ways depending on our experiences and how we relate to the characters, if we relate to the characters at all. It really is a beautiful thing.
Parental relationships especially are tough because we donβt get to choose our parents and I think wishing your parents were different or did things differently is a universal experience. And with Shawn we only see glimpses into that childhood and so it is natural to relate that to our own selves. I choose to believe that the moments not shown in the show are positive ones. Because the moments we see reflect aspects of a case or police training, and I donβt want that to be all there was and it doesnβt make sense to me that it would be all there is. But also I recognise that there arenβt many characters in any media that I hate - mostly because they are characters and not real but also because I want to believe the best in people, I see someoneβs actions and always do my best to choose (and it is a choice) to believe they have good intentions.
I would love to watch the show with other people who love Psych the way I do and listen to what they think certain scenes mean and how they relate to different episodes or how they impact their view of certain characters because I think it is beautiful how all of these people come together to make a TV show and they see these characters a certain way. But then every single person who watches the show sees these characters through their own lense of experience. So no two people watch the same show. No two people think the same. Isnβt that just awesome!?
