Canon-divergent AU in which Ben Solo was actually raised by Vader. Born following the Rebellionâs crushing defeat at Endor, Ben has spent his entire life under the assumption that his mother is dead and his father was some nameless deadbeat. The grandfather who raised him always seemed supportive and doting, even if he is more machine than man. But years later, Ben discovers that his grandfather may have lied about everything. Ben sets out to discover the truth about his mother, only to cross paths with a particular embittered old smuggler, his Wookiee sidekick, and their pretty new second mate. The Force has set Ben on a collision-course with not just his long-lost family, but his one true love.
Chapter Seven, In which there is a battle in the snow

Reyâs first Force lesson doesnât exactly go as planned. The now elderly Lord Vader is visited by the Ghost of Lifedays Past. Prepare for incoming Anakin/Obi-Wan shade-throwing.
The memory was surprisingly vivid.
Ben, then aged about five, walked close to Vaderâs side. The black-caped wizard cyborg and small boy entered the cantina. Conversation instantly went silent, the room filled only with the comfortingly familiar hiss of his grandfatherâs ventilator. Ben could feel the curious stares of the patrons. He reached for Grandfatherâs hand, firmly grasping one large, black-gloved finger, the bumps and ridges of the mechanical hand palpable through the black glove.
Vader strode up to the bar, itâs attendant standing with his back to them. âExcuse me,â Vader said, in a deep, electronic rumble. âThe boy needs to use the âfresher.â The boy was what Vader called Ben in public or around the untrustworthy, having explained that it wasnât safe to publicly own Ben as his grandson. Some people might try to hurt you if they knew how much I love you; Grandfather had said. Itâs safer if most people just think that you are my orphan apprentice.
Back still toward them, the barkeep gave a curt answer. âCustomers only.â
Vader responded with deadly calm. âI see. Do you have any non-intoxicating drinks?â
âWhat?â The barkeep sneered, finally turning around. The sight of Vader wiped the nasty look right off the barkeepâs face, and his voice suddenly took on at least some perfunctory politeness. âEr, I could pour a fruit mixer, and leave out the brandy.â
Vader turned to Ben, crouching slightly to speak to his small grandson, mechanical basso voice surprisingly soft. âBen, would you like a juice?â
