Just dropped this piece off at Epiphany Space in Hollywood for the “Love Your Land” show opening May 19. If this piece looks familiar it’s because it’s from my “Endangered Species: Along The Boarder” series. This is a Del Mar Manzanita, a very rare tree that grown exclusively along the Southern California coast. This piece and small prints will be available to purchase at the show so stop by and treat yourself to some wonderful local art that highlights Southern California’s indigenous flora and fauna. I always try to do something unique to the frames of digital pieces for art shows, this one features a matt made from twine as well as twine hanger. #loveyourland #delmarmanzanita #art #epiphanyspace #tuffwaffles #manzanita #digitalart #endangeredspecies #artshow
Omg this is great
The razorback sucker is a critically endangered species of freshwater sucker fish found in the southwestern United States. It can live up to 40 years and needs warm water to reproduce. Once found throughout the Colorado river basin, its range has shrunk to less than a quarter of what it once was and is considered rare in most areas. Commercial fishing along with dam construction has decimated the population. The razorback sucker was federally listed in 1991 with provisions for the protection of its critical habitat. #razorbacksucker #fish #endangeredspecies #conservation #nowall #coloradoriverbasin
The Peninsular Bighorn sheep's historical range used to span most of western North America, from Baja California up into parts of Canada. The species was placed under protection in 1971, but the population has declined from approximately 1,100 animals in the 1970s, to about 280 individuals in the wild today. Habitat loss and modification, human disturbance, fragmentation due to roads, rail and tram construction, livestock grazing, disease, poaching, and fire suppression all contribute to the decline of this beautiful and rare desert animal. #bighornsheep #peninsularbighornsheep #endangeredspecies #conservation #anzaborrego #desert #sheep #bighorn #nowall

The Pacific Pocket Mouse was thought to be extinct until 1993 when a small population was discovered. In 1994 it was granted Federal protection. The tiny mouse is found exclusively along the Southern California coast from Mar vista in Los Angeles county, down to the coastal boarder region in San Diego. It has never been recorded more than 2.5 miles from the coast. The Pacific pocket mouse is the smallest mammal that hibernates, surviving the winter months on seed caches stored in their burrows. The mice are slow to reproduce, usually only having one litter of pups a year. Threats are numerous and include habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation. #mouse #rodent #pacific #pocketmouse #pacificpocketmouse #endangeredspecies #conservation #awareness #nowall #noborderwall
Otay Mesa Mint is an exceptionally rare species of flowering plant from the mint family. Native to San Diego, it is only found in areas with vernal pools in Otay Mesa, a community bordering Mexico. The Otay Mesa Mint faces a number of threats, all of which are related to the loss and destruction of the rare vernal pool ecosystem it calls home. Urban development, trash dumping, pollution, vehicles, fire, grazing, and alterations in the local hydrology all contribute to the decline of this unique flowering plant. #otaymesa #mint #flower #plant #vernalpool #endangeredspecies #conservation #nowall
The Nichol's Turks Head Cactus was listed as an endangered species in 1976. Belonging to the barrel cactus family, this species is found only in the Vekol and Waterman mountains of Arizona with another small population in Northwest Sonora, Mexico. The cacti is very slow growing, taking ten years to grow two inches. The bright magenta flowers of the Nichol's Turks Head bloom nearly all at once and last only a single day. Threats include mining, off road vehicles, collectors and human encroachment. Because the growing range of the cacti is so close to the boarder, the construction of a wall between the US and Mexico would be detrimental to all recovery efforts. #cactus #cacti #desert #arizona #endangeredspecies #conservation #awareness #nowall #barrelcactus #flower #nicholsturkshead
The Ocelot is a small spotted cat that can be found in Texas, Arizona, Mexico and Central and South America. Weighing only up to 35 lbs and 4 feet in length (including tail), they are much smaller than the Jaguar. With fewer than 100 individuals left in the United States, the Ocelot is among the most endangered mammals in the country. The small cat was protected by the Endangered Species Act in 1982 but it's recovery isn't doing very well. Ocelots were originally hunted for their coats and removed from the wild to be sold as pets for the wealthy. Today the biggest threat to the Ocelot are highways. In one 11 month stretch from 2015-2016, seven Ocelots were hit by cars, wiping out a tenth of the population. The continued survival of the species relies on the population from Mexico, but if a boarder wall were to go up between the two countries the Ocelot population would become fragmented and disappear from the United States. #ocelot #endangeredspecies #conservation #nowall #cat #cats #catsofinstagram #texas #arizona #spots #desert

The Mexican Grey Wolf is the most endangered grey wolf in North America. It was listed under the endangered species act in 1976 but the wolf had been extirpated from the wild during the mid-1900s through a combination of hunting, trapping, poisoning and digging pups from dens. The wolf was saved through combined efforts of the U.S. and Mexico from 1977-1980 to capture all remaining Mexican Grey Wolves in the wild and start a captive breeding program. Four males and one female were caught and in 1998 the captive bred wolves began to be released into the wild in Arizona and New Mexico. Today there are 143 Mexican wolves living wild and 240 in captive breeding programs.
the Northern Aplomado Falcon was listed as endangered in 1986 but they seemed to have nearly disappeared from the United States by 1930. The falcons rely heavily on grasslands for their survival and it is speculated that herds of grazing cattle contributed to their swift decline. The birds can be found in southern Texas and throughout South America.
The Mexican Flannelbush is a rare species of shrub belonging to the mallow family. It is endemic to Northern Baja and southern San Diego, California. It is a hearty, drought resistant plant with beautiful yellow blooms. Because of it's specific growing range, a border wall would be a devastating blow for the flannelbush.

The Mexican Long Nosed Bat was listed as endangered in 1988. This migratory species has roosting grounds in Mexico and Texas, in Big Bend National Park. In Mexico the long nosed bats are often times mistaken for Vampire bats in tropical regions, which spread disease. Many bats and their roosting grounds in caves are destroyed because of this. Destruction of nesting grounds and food sources (mostly agave harvesting) are thought to be the main reason for the decline of these bats.
The Nellie Cory Cactus is the smallest species of cacti in North America growing to a height of around 2.5 inches. It is found only in Brewster county, Texas, where only three populations remain. The tiny cacti was listed as endangered in 1979 and the only major threat to it's survival in the wild is from collectors. It's small size, colorful blooms and unique spine clusters make it a desirable specimen for private collections.
