The Pacific Pocket Mouse was thought to be extinct until 1993 when a small population was discovered. In 1994 it was granted Federal protection. The tiny mouse is found exclusively along the Southern California coast from Mar vista in Los Angeles county, down to the coastal boarder region in San Diego. It has never been recorded more than 2.5 miles from the coast. The Pacific pocket mouse is the smallest mammal that hibernates, surviving the winter months on seed caches stored in their burrows. The mice are slow to reproduce, usually only having one litter of pups a year.
