Or a playstation or a flat screen TV or a newer car, etc and etc. I know people that work under the table for half their pay and get paid on the books for the rest and collect welfare. I know of drug dealers that collect for tax purposes even though they pull in thousands of untaxed money each month dealing. Tell me how I am not supposed to be upset with these people like I am with greedy corporate cronies? I’m not heartless. These people are selfish and unethical.
Except not everyone who has nice things is automatically cheating the system. People are given things as gifts. People buy things and THEN qualify for assistance. People save up for nice things. You can’t assume what someone’s situation is just by what they own.
We were eating only donated Panera bread, rice, and turnips. My father was sneaking to the various blood banks in town to sell his plasma at twice the rate they allow. My mother was dying due to not having her medicine, which cost well over $1,200 a month after insurance. My autistic baby brother wanted to do something nice for me. He worked for months making custom art pieces to sell. He worked up courage despite crippling social anxiety and speech problems to ask the neighbors if he could do chores for them to earn more money - raking the yard, helping clean their house, walking their dogs. For nine months he carefully hoarded his money in a jar in his bedroom. He counted it every single night and compared it to the cost of what he wanted to get for me for Christmas. Finally he had enough. He bought me a DS Lite and a pokemon game. He was so happy. Until one of our neighbors, a highly conservative jackass, saw me with it outside a couple weeks later. My brother was with me. The neighbor stormed up and became screaming at us, a pair of teenagers, over how we could be so selfish to spend money on “electronic shit” when we were a family on food stamps. Spittle flying from his lips, cuss words every other second, rage radiating off of him so violently that our father came running out of the house - at a limp, since his spine is broken, which causes him horrific daily pain beyond what I can imagine - to protect us. My brother was never the same again. There is no happy ending here. That episode in his life changed him permanently and for the past seven years he has almost never left his room and never gone to a friend’s house. He is terrified of the neighbors and believes he is a bad person. Because of fucking people like you OP. Because of fuckers who believe that they know what life is like for everyone and have a right to judge. So fuck you OP. If you know drug dealers, report them, go on and put your ass on the line then. But for fuck’s sake don’t you dare thing you understand what goes on in the life of the people who live in never-ending, grinding poverty. Because you have *no fucking clue* what goes on in the detailed lives of others. You want to talk selfish? Look in the fucking mirror.
This is an important post.
that time Bill O Reily was shocked and appalled that poor people could afford *gasp* A TV AND A FRIDGE IN THEIR APT? and went on a rant saying these ppl shouldn’t be on welfare because they have a plasma tv and fridge because obviously poor people need to not have tvs and fridge because poor ppl should be storing their food underground in holes and draw on walls with stones and sticks for entertainment.
When I was a child on welfare, eating rotten lunch meat, walking in shoes with cardboard in the bottoms to cover the holes, I had an extensive collection of My Little Ponies. Not “one or two horses”; over three hundred, all told, and almost all the major playsets. Maybe, oh, 10% of the total came from my mother, over the course of the eight years I spent collecting and living with her. The rest were gifts from family members who didn’t know about our situation, but knew from Gramma’s chatty “everything is fine” letters that I loved My Little Pony. They were from the charity groups that let you sign up and specify what your children wanted for Christmas. They were from me saving every penny I found on the street. They were from favorite teachers who knew how poor we were, who wanted me to have birthday happiness. We’re talking thousands of dollars of plastic horses, almost none of which took a dime from Mom’s budget. And the ones that did? She was a mother trying not to break her daughter’s heart.
Every time someone yelled at us because poor people shouldn’t have nice things, we all died a little inside, and I clutched my horses even harder. I needed something bright and beautiful in the world, to make up for the roaches in the walls and the mold growing on the butter.
Unless you’re someone’s accountant, you don’t know where they’re putting their money, and it’s not your place to judge.
Amen. Â I have never understood this contempt for people down on their luck. Â
Fun facts: Plenty of cell phone providers (at least in the US) will let customers skip the upfront payment of a cellphone, and just tack it on to their monthly bill in installments. Lots of retail places will let you trade in old stuff in order to get a new phone. iPads are a pretty common prize to be had in church raffles and whatnot.
And, of course, there’s eBay and Craigslist. I’ve seen so many ads on CL after bad breakups/divorces where the wronged party will literally give away their exes stuff.
We had to turn off our cell phones and cable so we could afford our medication (I have anxiety and rheumatoid arthritis and he has a hernia). The only reason we have internet is because it’s included in our rent. Despite this, we still can’t get any sort of government assistance and have been turned down every time we put in for it because “we make too much” and don’t have any children. We had to decrease our food intake to about 500 calories a day just so we can survive between checks. He works 12 hour night shifts 6 days a week in a factory and I go to school full time, work part time and get any odd job I can get, and we do this all on an empty stomach and barely any sleep. I go to farmers markets around closing time and beg for blemished food and have dumpster dived more times than I would like to share.
He had to sell his amplifier and half stack to pay a hospital bill from when I had life threatening pneumonia and bronchitis, and I had to sell the gold ring I’ve had since I was a little girl and my clarinet so we wouldn’t get evicted after he tore a tendon in his hand at work and they refused to give him paid leave or workers comp.Â
I tell you all of this to explain why I get annoyed when I see someone driving a nice car and using an iPhone use food stamps to buy junk food or using their welfare check to buy alcohol and cigarettes (I work in a liquor store and it happens A LOT.)
Poor people deserve nice things, but please don’t spend “free money” or handouts to buy them.Â
Sorry but when I see a begger talking on their smartphone while simultaneously asking for money on a street corner it really makes it hard to not get a little angry. Â I can understand the need for a poor or even homeless person to have a phone I mean hell they need something to help them receive job offers but having a top of the line phone with super expensive service plans really doesn't inspire charity in me. Â Add to the fact that I know it's common for people on street corners to make over $100 a day from the fact that I've had junkie friends that chose that route and I lose all trust whatsoever. Â A lot of those same people are on welfare too and at the end of the day make more money than I do working 60 hours a week at my job which is downright ridiculous. Â I'm not condemning welfare or other social services as I myself have had to go on unemployment a couple times when I lost my job but they'res no denying the system is broken and could use a little more oversight. Â On the flipside there are rich people who abuse loopholes in the tax system and take far more than they need due to problems with how money is distributed through or economic system which is equally wrong if not more so. Â Maybe if they didn't take so much poor people wouldn't feel the need to abuse the system because they'd be able to survive more comfortably off their own merits. Â You can point fingers all day long placing blame on people but in the end the problem is just people in general. Â A lack of empathy and concern for your fellow man and too much greed and materialism.
Me anytime I try to do anything.

Das ist, Warum ich Ein stolzer Deutscher bin. Wir sind aufgeklärte Menschen.
I don’t think women need to shave in order to be sexy.  I don’t think they need to fit a certain dress size.  I don’t think they need to wear dresses, for that matter, though they can if they want to.  They can wear bowties if they want to.
Stereotypes are damaging to both men and women. Â I need feminism because beauty is not just one thing, and women are not just one thing, either.
The problem here is not how men view women it's how women view themselves. Humans by nature categorize EVERYTHING but if you're happy with yourself nothing else really matters.

welp
and if any of you white people respond with “wait but I didn’t do that. that was in the past”
i need you to check your privilege
and then drink bleach if you think your hands aren’t dirty
They’re not.
Guilt doesn’t transfer from generation to generation. I am not magically accountable for something my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather MIGHT have done. Also;
>social justice blogger >telling people to kill themselves
I love that there’s a blog called “this is white culture” that is solely devoted to bad things white people did, not their cultures at all.  So I guess I can make a blog called “this is black culture” and post gang and crime records and that’s 100% okay.  Or “this is Muslim culture” and make it all about terrorism.
But wait, you cry.  Not all black people are criminals and not all Muslims are terrorists.  That’s unfair!  And racist!
WELL GOLLY GEE DO YOU THINK SO?  Because saying that all white people are responsible for the Atlantic slave trade sounds pretty racist to me, given that, you know, that was between the African slaveholders and the British and Americans and had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my ancestors, who were incredibly poor farmers and serfs from Ireland and Lithuania who had to flee to America at around the turn of the century (by which time slavery had already been abolished in the US) because they were being treated like slaves.  Even if they had been living in America at the time when slavery was legal they wouldn’t have been able to afford a slave; in fact they probably would have been working with them in the fields and treated about the same, since the first slaves in America were actually white serfs.  But please, tell me more about how dirty my hands are because of circumstances surrounding my birth that I could not control and continue to treat me differently based on the color of my skin without actually knowing anything about my heritage, I’m sure that isn’t racist at all!
*slow clap*
Thank you
That doesn't even begin to mention the fact that black slaveowners traded white slaves they clipped from Europe around the same time.
What the fuck happened? Â Where's our better world?
