𝒖𝒉 𝒐𝒉.

          “ whatchu  you  mean  i  hate  teamwork ? ”     the  question  is  asked  incredulously.  he  might  even  be  just  slightly  offended;  but  he  allows  himself  to  be  tugged  along  into  the  booth  with  her.     “ i  feel  like  you  really  tryin’  to  offend  me.  you  know  gambit  loves  him  some  breakin’  and  enterin’.  but  what  we  really  talkin’  about  here ? ”

          barely  broke  a  sweat  dealing  with  that  mugger;  it  gives  him  a  feeling  that  it  is  going  to  be  one  of  the  more  relaxed  nights.  or  rather,  as  relaxed  as  they  could  be  after  the  events  of  the  earthquake.  one  bad  guy  down  and  he’s  ready  to  take  off  to  find  another—  but  someone  gets  the  drop  on  him.  which  is, well,  wild.  no  one  gets  the  drop  on  him  except  for  ...   bruce.  surprise  might  be  more  obvious  on  his  face  if  it  weren’t  for  the  domino  mask.  but  dick  is  anything  if  not  adaptable,  recovering  quickly  as  a  grin  begins  to  form.     “ wouldn’t  want  you  to  go  and  overexert  yourself,  old  man. ”     he  teases  good  naturedly.  dick  initially  fights  back  the  urge  to  take  the  steps  forward  and  hug  the  man  who  had  played  the  role  of  father  to  him  for  so  long.  had  they  not  been  in  costume,  it  would  have  been  the  very  first  thing  he  did—  but,  you  know  what ?  screw  it.  one  step,  then  two.  and  he’s  pulling  the  batman  into  that  hug.     “ it’s  good  to  see  you.  i  ...  well,  i  wasn’t  sure  i  was  going  to  find  any  of  you  again. ”

        surprise  is  written  clear  on  his  face.  last  time  he  saw  felicia  he  still  had  both  his  legs  and  lacked  an  alien  symbiote  who  liked  to  beg  him  for  food.  it  takes  a  beat  before  he  offers  a  smile.   “  oh,  wow !  hey,  ‘licia.  ”   the  old  nickname  kicks  in  swiftly.   “  i’m  enjoying  myself  as  much  as  i  can  around  people  with  more  money  than  they  know  what  to  do  with.  but  how  about  you ?  you’’ve  been  alright ?  ”

          he  would  quite  literally  rather  be  anywhere  but  here.  the  avengers  had  never  shown  any  interest  in  mutant  affairs  before  and  now  only  seemed  interest  in  their  help  when  they  would  benefit.  maybe  remy  ought  to  look  at  it  as  though  an  olive  branch  were  being  extended,  but  all  it  did  was  serve  to  annoy  him  immensely.  it  offered  some  comfort  that  he  wasn’t  alone  in  that  train  of  thought.   “  from  you  lips  to  god’s  ears,  mon  ami.  ”   he  raises  a  glass  to  her.  just  water,  since  he  doesn’t  trust  the  vast  majority  of  the  people  in  this  room.   “  who  sees  us  trapped  in  a  different  time  and  goes  thinkin’  that  it  would  be  a  great  moment  for  a  party ?  ”

          “  you  look  amazing,  cin.  and  you  aren’t  even  the  only  one  to  blow  off  the  theme.  ”   he  states  this  all  as  though  it  were  the  most  obvious  thing  in  the  world.  however,  he  gets  it.  knows  well  that  the  attention  ain’t  going  to  be  her  thing,  but  felt  that  she  needed  to  at  least  hear  both  the  compliment  and  that  she  wasn’t  alone.  and  in  all  honesty ?  he  isn’t  much  for  this  gala  thing  either.  really  only  wanted  to  come  to  see  his  friends  again.  plus,  flash  didn’t  have  much  faith  in  the  rich  dishing  out  good  food  at  an  event  like  this.   “  i  don’t  mind  bailing,  though.  i  kinda  want  a  burger  and  i  doubt  stark’s  fancy  chef  will  be  happy  if  i  ask,  you  know ?  ”

          she  makes  a  quick  motion  over  her  mouth  as  though  she  is  zipping  her  lips.  aside  from  the  after  school  drama  grade  mean  girl  she  encountered  earlier,  dinah  isn’t  here  to  ruffle  any  feathers.   “  no  one  will  hear  a  peep  from  me.  besides,  i’m  pretty  sure  i  am  way  out  of  my  jurisdiction  here.  so,  do  what  you  gonna  do.  ”

          “  this  has  stark  written  all  over  it.  ”   he  comments  dryly  while  turning  to  his  new  companion  at  the  bar.  robbie  doesn’t  personally  hold  anything  against  the  avengers,  but  he  will  easily  admit  to  a  gala  being  a  bit  much  given  the  situation  at  hand.  and  so,  the  sarcasm  comes  full  force.   “  gotta  a  purple  grape  that  wants  to  kill  us  off ?  displaced  in  time ?  sounds  like  we  need  to  party !  being  this  rich  must  be  a  wild  ride.  ”

          it  took  every  ounce  of  willpower  not  to  roll  her  eyes  and  give  the  blonde  the  bird.  instead—  being  the  mature  and  kind  person  that  dinah  was—  she  resorted  to  name  calling.   “  no  one  asked  for  you  opinion,  regina  george.  so,  you  can  keep  your  high  school  grade  catty  remarks  to  yourself  and  keep  drinking.  ”

(   @rewrittenstart​   )          he  feels  a  little  ridiculous.  stuffed  into  a  rented  suit  and  feeling  both  uncomfortable  and  entirely  out  of  place.  they  don’t  do  galas  in  hillrock  heights.  so,  unless  some  people  are  going  to  get  sloppy  drunk  and  start  fighting  he’ll  likely  remain  feeling  out  of  his  element.   “  can  i  get  a  whiskey  neat ?  thanks.  ”   he  asks  the  bartender.   “  thank  god  there  is  an  open  bar  at  this  thing.  ”

          “  i  don’t  know.  i  feel  like  my  impression  of  you  is  pretty  spot  on.  ”   there  is  a  ghost  of  a  smile  on  his  face,  threatening  to  break  out  fully  at  a  moments  notice.  as  good  as  it  is  to  see  her  again,  part  of  him  wants  to  focus  on  the  mission  at  hand—  but  he’s  been  living  in  his  car  and  damn,  does  coffee  sound  real  good  right  now.  so,  he  nods.   “  i  could  go  for  some  coffee.  but  is  it  sneaking  in  if  i’m  there  as  your  guest ?  ”
