1. Ooh, look at this important and interesting thing! I wonder what it means or how it works! What do you mean the show's over?

This finale was actually so bad at telling us ANYTHING. Let me ask you a few questions and see if you can answer them without using fan theories or information from outside the 9 main episodes of the show.

What was the deal with C&A? Who runs it? Is it an irl company?

What was the blue sphere circle thing? Why did Caine rip it out of his head? What did/could it do?

What is abstraction? What does it do to you? Why can't Caine bring back abstracted characters? How was Pomni able to access Jax after she abstracted?

Why was Caine sent to the void after being deleted? How was he able to being himself back? Where did Bubble go? Why did Caine not abstract, considering the circus characters are only recreations of their real selves?

All of these and more are questions completely unanswered by the finale, and most of these are only questions the finale raises. Rewatch from Episode 1 and I'm sure there are even more unanswered questions.

2. Piss poor pacing.

This episode is paced really weirdly. You have the first seven-ish minutes of the aftermath of Episode 8, then almost half an hour of the whole polava with Jax abstracting, then we get 10 minutes of Caine coming back, he has a monologue, they watch the future stuff and they live happily ever after. Because the middle portion of the abstraction of Jax starts so early but goes on for so long, it leaves everything else feeling half baked, and it means that by the end of this 58 minute episode, it feels like nothing has happened, but at the same time, it feels like everything drags on for so long.

3. Jax.

This is probably going to be the longest section. I mean this with my whole chest when I say that Jax is not just the worst character of this show, but she is one of the most poorly written, unlikeable, and potentially problematic characters ever.

I first wrote this post before Gooseworx confirmed Jax as a trans woman (we'll get to that), so for clarification, I will be referring to Jax with she/her pronouns for the rest of this post.

Jax is an abusive character, and I don't think anyone would argue that, but people (especially Jax fans) tend to shuffle their feet when Jax is called a full on abuser. Jax is deliberately terrible towards almost the entire cast. Ribbit, Ragatha, Zooble, Gangle, Kaufmo and Pomni have all faced his wrath. You can have characters who are terrible to everyone and have them written well, but the thing is that Jax isn't written well, because of a few reasons. For a character that treats others poorly to be an enjoyable character, you need one of three things. They need to be sympathetic, they need to have redeeming qualities, or they need to face sufficient consequences for how they act.

Monika from DDLC is a good example of a character who has reasons to be a villain. She is a self-aware character trapped in a game where she is powerless to make choices where she can only watch as the only person she has ever loved can only partner up with her friends, who aren't intelligent or self-aware. She is completely alone, so she eliminates her competition. This is a valid reason for doing what she does, and even then, she gets payback anyway as she gets deleted, she's one of the most perfect examples of a likeable antagonist.

As for an evil character getting karma, take a character like Eric Cartman. In Season 5 Episode 6 of South Park 'Cartmanland', Cartman gets $1 million dollars from his grandma's will and buys a theme park only for him, meanwhile, Cartman's foil, arch enemy and close friend Kyle, almost dies from infected hemorrhoids. At the end, Cartman gets his money seized by the IRS, gets sued by Kenny's parents, and gets beaten up and pepper sprayed by the security guard he couldn't afford to pay. This cures Kyle's hemorrhoids and restores his faith in God. If the episode ended with Cartman getting called a dick by his peers while Kyle dies, it would not be a good episode because Cartman, while disliked by the character's, would have lost nothing in particular.

This is what happens with Jax throughout the entire show. Throughout the show, Jax mocks Zooble, bullies Ragatha, emotionally abuses Gangle, constantly breaking her mask and picking on her to the point where she genuinely breaks down in fear over what Jax will do to her. Not to mention she also blackmails her. And, after telling her secrets to Ribbit, she completely ghosts her and manipulates her into isolating herself from everyone until she abstracts. Ribbit's abstraction and the circumstances around it, at least to me, is an allegory for suicide. To me it seems like if this was in real life, Jax would have isolated everyone from Ribbit until she killed herself. You may be able to infer the same from Kaufmo's abstraction with their brief encounter during the sequence too, but we get no details on that because who cares, right?

And what does Jax get in return for this? Well, Zooble calls her a dick for 8 episodes, then she abstracts with no explanation, and everyone mourns her. This is nothing. Jax gets to bully everyone for 9 episodes and is let off the hook.

Now you could argue that her backstory is fair enough reason to act that way. But is it? In a boiled down explanation, Jax's parents divorced, and Jax's mother prodded her masculinity. Then Jax told her mother a deep personal secret, likely that she's trans, to which she laughed and hugged her. Jax pushed her over, and she didn't get up for a bit, so Jax ran from home not knowing if she lives or dies. Is it sad? Yes. Enough to warrant her actions? No. Characters have done less bad things for reasons better than Jax.

She also has no redeeming qualities. She's not funny, not likeable, not friends with anyone, and she doesn't do any interesting things or anything to benefit the narrative apart from bully people. She is NOT lovely.

Jax also takes up too much screen time. You've heard it before, this isn't snything groundbreaking. Throughout the entire series, characters' plotlines get shafted in favour of more Jax, and it leads to us knowing very little about the rest of the cast. We know about Ragatha's mother, and most of Kinger's story, but what about Pomni, Gangle or Zooble? We know almost nothing about their backstories. Even Ragatha we don't know that much about, just that she's a farm girl with a shit mother.

4. Gooseworx and the cast behind TADC.

And Jax's dislikeability makes her role in the finale even worse. 28 minutes is just dedicated to her abstracting and just abusing people. It's unpleasant.

They also dealt with Jax's reveal as being trans HORRIBLY. They were terrible at foreshadowing it. Yes, she was misogynistic and a lot of trans women struggle with internalised misogyny, but before the FINAL EPISODE, we are given no reason to think she is anything other than a misogynistic man. You can make a character have internalised misogyny without having their entire waking existance being hateful towards women. The maid dress (despite how much it's an installment of 'The Writer's Barely Disguised Fetish') could have been a useful avenue to foreshadowing that Jax is trans. All we needed was one scene of Jax in his room, and maybe looking at the maid dress with a bit of longing and you would have better foreshadowing. Another thing is that this isn't revealed until the final episode, and even then they don't even have the guts to say she's trans in the show. Gooseworx only confirmed this after the show ended, and this leads to Jax's reveal as being trans feeling like an afterthought. It's a huge disservice to all of the trans people that loved and enjoyed TADC.

I'm sure by now everyone knows about the blatant racism expressed by Gooseworx and most of the voice cast behind TADC, specifically anti-blackness. With this as a lens, it makes some of TADC much harder to watch. Especially with Gangle, the only black woman currently alive in the circus, is the one most targeted by the white Jax. This picture is made even nastier with the fact that Jax is Gooseworx's self insert, and Gooseworx is known to be extremely racist, making Jax's vehement abuse of Gangle even more disgusting. Then there was the use of Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't She Lovely". Except they used a white person's cover of a black person's song. Gooseowrx is so racist she can't even have black-written songs on her show. Abd they even used it in the right context, the song was about the birth of Stevie Wonder's daughter. Jax wasn't even lovely why did they choose this song. I think this is way Jax was randomly pushed really hard into the spotlight from Episode 5 onwards to the point where Gooseworx calls him the second main character. Gooseworx showing disdain for writing female characters on twitter adds to the general ickiness I get from.the way the female characters of TADC are presented. They almost exclusively exist to further Jax's backstory while little to no focus is put on them. See Zooble, Gangle, Ribbit, Ragatha, Pomni. We get nothing about most of these characters and their backstories, and yet Jax gets half of the finale dedicated to it. This is clearly misogynistic writing. I'm interested to know if the finale passes the Bechdel Test and if it does then how many times?

Okay, I think this is all I have for now. I may add to this, but its past 2am right now and I really wanna finish this. Obviously feel free to like the finale but I think it's a crock of shit
