the world building of wreck it Ralph is crazy because every game character is created with an inate sense of personality built by a past that never actually happened to them, and they live their life as if the canon of their game is their reality because in a way it is, but ALSO live with the knowledge that the past they have lived is not in fact real and they will never age or have any new life experiences besides their “noncanon” interactions with other characters from other games.

If you are a video game character in the universe of Wreck It Ralph, once your particular cabinet is plugged in you are born with an innate knowledge of a past you share with every other version of you, but eventually as you interact with other games after hours you just become more jaded and the events you play out every day become less and less meaningful as time goes on?

In the first movie before Felix gives Calhoun the context about what “going Turbo” means, he remarks on the fact that Hero’s Duty had just been plugged in recently. So at the point he meets Calhoun, he has effectively existed for DECADES and every experience he has had with other games and character has done pretty much nothing other than make him come to terms with the fact that his game just isn’t real. Calhoun takes her game so seriously not just because it’s her personality, but because newly plugged in characters just have an innate sense of their canon responsibilities that goes away with time.

Calhoun has real PTSD and trauma of her past that never happened and is not unique to her, and I suppose that as she continues to exist in the arcade she’ll begin to realize that the EVENT never happened but still have to exist with the PERMANENT PTSD that’s been programmed into her forever.

What a miserable existence, great movie, 10/10.
