For this week's short we spoke with Ariana Katz, creator of the Kaddish podcast - a new show about death, mourning, and the people who do it.
The first episode of Kaddish was released earlier this week, you can listen here. And you can follow Kaddish on Facebook and Twitter!
On this week’s short, we spoke with Dove Kent, outgoing director of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ), about the group's work, the direction they're headed, and how the organization has changed since it's founding 25 years ago.
From the HuffingtonPost bio: M. Dove Kent is the Executive Director of Jews For Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ) in New York City. She has over a decade of experience in issue-based, identity-based, and neighborhood-based organizing in Boston, St. Louis, and New York in the fields of affordable housing, immigrant rights, police accountability, restorative justice, religious freedom, and community arts. She teaches on widely on anti-Semitism and the roles of Jews in the movement for justice.
Episode 19: The End of Leftist Jewish Publishing in Canada
On this episode, we try to crowdsource a new tagline for the podcast, kicking off the #treyftagline twitter campaign - send us your ideas! We're then joined by Hani Ghazi, organizer with Adalah NY, for a new instalment of BDS Watch Watch about NY Governor Cuomo's recent executive order to criminalize BDS. Sam introduces our first listener-submitted Shkoyach and David tries to understand a confrontation between far-right activists and Israeli tourists in the Ukraine. For the interview we're joined by Carl Rosenberg, editor of Outlook Magazine, to talk about closing the doors on Canada's last remaining leftist Jewish publication. We talk about Outlook's final issue and the legacy he hopes they leave behind.

It’s our ‘Chai’ episode! We started it off by talking about Italian Eurocommunism and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). We were joined by Josh Nathan Kazis, a staff writer at the Jewish Daily Forward, to talk about a growing scandal in New York City politics, reaching from the Mayor’s office to the orthodox communities of Borough Park and Williamsburg. This episode featured a description-free Shkoyach, with discussions of kosher labelling, kosher restaurant month, and the contentious subject of raisin challah. For the interview, we talked about the recent Jews of Color National Convening with conference organizer Leo Ferguson and Montreal activist Hirut Eyob. Finally, Aviva Stahl’s recent article for Alternet’s Grayzone Project is our recommendation for the week.
*EDIT: during this week's Shkoyach segment, David convinced Sam that COR stood for 'Council of Orthodox Rabbis.' This is incorrect. It appears that COR is not an acronym at all, instead a mysterious shorthand used by the Kashruth Council of Canada to label their certified products. Please direct all questions their way.

We're back after a one month hiatus! On this week’s episode, we talked with activist and journalist Jesse Myerson about his recent exchange with the Forward’s JJ Goldberg, and the Jewish media’s coverage of Bernie Sanders. We took a new approach to describing the Shkoyach segment, Sam talked about a Chassidic gang in Borough Park, and David awarded his Shkoyach to a Montreal synagogue distancing themselves from an illegal kosher wine ring. For the interview, we were joined by Michelle Weiser from the new group If Not Now to talk about their origins, their Liberation Seder actions, and their strategy of confronting the institutional Jewish community. Finally, the deadline to submit to the new issue of Jenna Brager's Doykeit Zine is rapidly approaching - we spoke with her briefly for this week's recommendation.

Episode 16 - Mizrahi-Palestinian Solidarity with Sigal Samuel
...Your episode of TREYF for the 20th of Adar II 5776
On this week’s episode: we cleared the air on statements made about Jewish hockey players, condemned the Canadian Jewish News’ questionable news coverage, and talked about grogger’s (yet again). We spoke with +972 journalist Mairav Zonszein about what got lost in the conversations about Trump’s speech at the AIPAC conference. Shkoyakhs were given to BDS activists in Oshawa, Ontario, and to a robot who infiltrated an Open Hillel event. Sigal Samuel, the Forward’s Opinion Editor, joined us for the Interview. We talked about Mizrahi-Palestinian Solidarity, and the popularity of intersectionality in the North American Jewish press. Our recommendation goes to the Independent Jewish Voices' Statement of Support for the Blacks Students Network at McGill University.

Episode 15: Canada Park With Ismail Zayid
On this episode we try to explain the story of Purim, discuss our love for graggers, and successfully meet the show's JewCon requirements. We talked with Tyler Levitan from Independent Jewish Voices about the Canadian Jewish News' refusal to publish anti-Zionist perspectives, Sam tries to explain sports to David, and we issue a Shkoyach to anti-fascist activists in Montreal who shut down a Jewish Defence League event honouring a British fascist. For the interview, we're joined by retired professor and longtime activist Ismail Zayid to talk about the JNF's Canada Park and his over 40 years of work advocating for the right of return for displaced Palestinians.

Episode 14: Resisting Pinkwashing with Dean Spade
This episode includes references to hair gel, 1990s hair flips, and the difference between Adar I and Adar II. We brought back the BDS Watch Watch segment to discuss reverse BDS in the US and Canada, the campaign for BDS at McGill, and recent fear mongering at York University. We return to Illinois to address yet another instance of menorah vandalism, and gave a Shkoyach to sweet potatoes. For the Interview, we spoke with activist and academic Dean Spade about backlash that he received after the Creating Change conference, and what it means to talk about anti-semitism from an anti-zionist perspective.
**We recorded this episode before the BDS motion (that passed the General Assembly at McGill University) was nullified by an online ratification vote. See the McGill Daily’s “BDS Motion Nullified in Online Ratification” and the CBC’s “McGill University BDS movement vows to continue”. Organizers are currently challenging this outcome (due to widespread online campaigning by Zionist groups, in violation of university regulation) so the story is still ongoing.

Episode 13 - Mizrahi-Washing, & Dave Zirin Returns!
It's Treyf’s bar mitzvah episode! On this special occasion, we reminisced about our 13th birthdays and the process of getting older as a podcast. We called Ilan Benattar from Jews for Racial and Economic Justice’s Mizrahi caucus to talk about a Tablet Magazine article and the concept of Mizrahi-washing. After some technical issues the first time around, Dave Zirin joined us for the interview, discussing Zionism and Palestine solidarity activism in the NBA. And finally, our recommendation went to the recent New York Times parody issue distributed by JVP/Jews Say No, and we spoke to Beth Miller about the project.

Episode 12 - #CancelPinkwashing and the Intersectionality Boogieman
On this episode: we addressed the deluge of #intersectionality related articles in the Jewish press, and spoke with Liza Behrendt of Jewish Voice for Peace about the Cancel Pinkwashing mobilization that took place at the National LGBTQ Task Force’s Creating Change Conference in Chicago. Our (newly appointed) New York media correspondent Jonathan Katz discussed the place of Tablet Magazine in the Jewish mediascape, and for those keeping track, we re-introduced the anti-shkoyach.

On this episode: We spoke with Keren Soffer Sharon about her work at Jews for Racial & Economic Justice [JFREJ], where she has been building the organization’s first Mizrahi Caucus. In our newest BDS Watch Watch segment, we talked about the Institutional Jewish community’s awkward attempts to talk “intersectionality” as a means of countering the growing BDS movement in North America. Lastly, Shkoyachs were given to Jewish Voice for Peace’s anti-islamophobia Chanukah actions, and the two activists/academics who took the Toronto Star to task for questionable historical fluff pieces.
