defending butches includes defending butches you arent physically attracted to/arent attracted to you btw. you can defend butches you arent dating or fucking btw. you can defend butches with identities you dont fully understand btw. you can defend butch4butch as a femme btw.
To all trans men on this site, im gonna put you onto something. If you are in need of a binder but have unsupportive parents or are closeted, if you have a fondness for the ocean, or if youre bored with the normal colors of binder available, go to Waterlust and get a top
As you can see above, theyre all patterned like marine life, but theyre also reversible! One side has the pattern, the other is solid color, and they're all fun colors like blues and reds and greens, but some like the whale and tiger shark ones are more subtle grays and blacks. I have the whale shark one and the spongebob one (which was a limited run), and theyre both very well designed and printed. My spongebob one has served me for roughly four years and it hasn't worn at all.
What really matters? The binding power, and these things are great. I'm a triple D cup and with a medium I look like I have subtle pecs. They're also much less compressive than other binders due to their materials (which are mostly recycled!), so you can wear them for longer without getting sore. When I did more intensive theater and band performances, I could still act, dance, and play bari sax without getting winded or hurting myself. They're also swim tops, and I've scuba dived in these as well comfortably.
If that wasn't all, proceeds from each purchase are donated towards marine conservation and education initiatives! Purchasing shark printed ones specifically donate to shark studies and conservation orgs, parrotfish and coral prints support coral restoration initiatives, and so on. The high price tag is for a good reason.
Overall, if you're looking for an all around good binder, one that matches your whimsey and supports a good cause, Waterlust is the place to go.
Adding OP's clarification from the comments. IDs below.
ID 1: A screenshot of Waterlust's webstore, with multiple marine-themed compression bras displayed on models with a variety of body types. From left to right, top to bottom, the products are as follows: Mermaid Reversible Top, Coral Conservation Reversible Top, Kelp Reversible Top, Whale Shark Warrior Reversible Top, Parrotfish Protection Reversible Top, Fountain of Youth/Mermaid Camo Reversible Top, Tiger Shark Trailblazer Reversible Top, and Mantis Moxie Reversible Top. End ID.
ID 2: A Whale Shark patterned compression top that's laid out on the floor. End ID.
ID 3: A selfie of OP wearing a Spongebob-themed compression top. End ID.
ID 4: Screenshot of a comment by galactic-mayhem, the OP. Comment says: "Not explicitly for binding, they're compressive bras but the compression is enough to give a binder-like effect. Completely safe to use." End ID.
Racerback crop tops with a seamless, reversible design and mid-level support. Made from recycled, post-consumer plastic bottles. Ultra chlor
I wanted to remind everyone in this tag that femicides are on the rise in Turkey and it also affects transmascs and trans men in this country. In case you want to help:
Donate to Mor Çatı: a women's domestic shelter foundation that allows transmascs and trans men.
Donate to Mor Dayanışma: a women's right foundation that's inclusive of trans people.
Donate to Kadın Dayanışma Vakfı: a women's right foundation that's inclusive of trans people.
Donate to Kadın Cinayetlerini Durduracağız: a platform that was founded to raise awareness of femicides in Turkey.
Feel free to add on!
Never felt like I was "transmasculinized" or "transfeminized" fully. I've experienced both at different times, but also, I think I've mostly been degendered and binarized. Forced to pick one that doesn't fit me, and my REAL gender never getting any recognition or care.
I've actually experienced a rejection of even being able to speak on it, because I'm not binary. Did they even mean to include us in the first place????? How does this kind of thing affect non binary people specifically? "transneutral/ transandrogynous"? the ones that are xenogender too
do you as a non binary person feel included in these discussions?
Yes
No
well would you look at that. Shocked, I tell you

I'm gonna start saying "especially non binary ppl" when talking about trans issues. Trans people are really struggling, especially non binary ppl, because we're treated like jokes and freaks in our own communities. I'm kind of sick and tired of things being "especially" about everyone else but us
Non binary people are treated like the scapegoats of the trans community, everything is our fault. We're too loud, to assertive, too annoying, too cringe. Too out there, we are visibly trans a lot of the time, and that pisses people the fuck off because we like it and it's a part of our gender identity and expression. We are just as oppressed and face just as much violence as everyone else
Hate it when people say “these new laws in place affect all trans people especially [insert binary identity]” when literally trans laws don’t even include non-binary people in the first place. Inaccessibility to gender affirming care affects all trans people, especially non-binary people who aren’t even allowed access anyway if they’re not going through a binary transition. Bathroom bills affect all trans people, especially non-binary people because there are still only two gendered bathroom that they’re forced to use, both of which are potentially hostile because not every non-binary person can or wants to pass as a binary gender. Enforced gender markers affect all trans people, especially non-binary people because they either have to pick a gender marker that misgenders them or they have to take the risk of using the very visibly trans marker “X” which could put them in danger of harassment and discrimination by any official who chooses to target them.
Like, it feels like the current goals for trans liberation have returned to such a binary place, which means non-binary people are left out entirely despite being so targeted by anti-trans legislation that they’re written out of basic human rights laws more than any other trans person.
They complain about us taking up too much space, but then barely mention us in their activism otherwise. Hmmmm
there are certain trans transphobes on here that use wording so specific that it clocks them as kalvin garrah fans immediately
many amazing contributors in this book!

By the way, I think it's important to know (for context, if nothing else) that most people LIKE their gender. Most people generally LIKE the experience of being their gender much more than they dislike it.
This is part of why gender, like, persists as a concept.
A lot of people (particularly people who don't realize they're trans, and also TERFs) think that most people (especially women) HATE their genders and HATE their experience with gender.
That's really far from true. Most women like being women (cis or trans). They hate sexism for sure (unless they're a tradwife or antifeminist and don't believe it exists ig), they may have suffered tremendously due to sexism, but like. They generally do like being women.
Similarly, most men, like. Generally like being men and enjoy that they are men and enjoy being a man.
So if you hate your gender, if you hate being a woman or being a man and assume everyone secretly lowkey feels that way on the inside, I really do want to let you know that that is not actually how most people feel and you should probably do some thinking about whether you might be trans
When we were in college I told a very dear friend who was having a very hard time "Hey uh. You know. Actually most people...enjoy their genders" and I could kind of see her brain imploding in real time under the force of that statement
Three months later she told me she was trans, and three days ago, she told me she's now out as trans femme everywhere except at work <3
Think about it. It actually might change your life
If you are absolutely miserable being a man, you can just...stop being a man. Or realize you weren't ever actually one in the first place
If you are absolutely miserable being a woman, you can just...stop being a woman. Or realize you weren't ever actually one in the first place
So this isn't directly on theme for this blog necessarily, but I recently reconnected with this friend, and I've been thinking about this a lot since then, and as a trans person myself, I think it's a really important message
A lot of trans people are absolutely SUFFOCATING under how much they hate being/"being" their assigned gender
So, reason for hope:
If "being a man" or "being a woman" is something you hate, or makes you feel miserable, or makes you hate yourself, or makes you feel like you're suffocating under the weight of it, you can literally just nope out of that
(This also absolutely applies if you read that paragraph and went "Okay I don't like it but it's not THAT bad." That's a level of feeling a lot of trans people experience but it is in no way necessary to be trans, and also the impulse to minimize things can be so strong)
You can say "Actually I'm a man" or "Actually I'm a woman." You can say "Actually I'm neither of those." You can say "Actually I'm both of those and more." You can say "Actually I don't have a gender." You can say "Actually I'm some other gender entirely." You can say "Actually fuck off with this entire concept of gender and get it away from me please." You can say whatever feels most right.
You are NOT doomed to feel like that forever and there IS a way out, and even when things are hard, being trans is beautiful

I have to wonder: do you not think that trans men can pass? because sure, a structurally patriarchal society does not benefit non passing trans men, but passing trans men gain male privilege as long as they are seen as men. that is what everyone is talking about.
This is just simply the dumbest fucking argument. Do I think trans men can pass? Obviously I do. I often pass. But you're referring to a situation in which individual people are perceiving, and therefore treating, trans people as a "class" of person they do not actually believe we belong to. That shit happens to every kind of trans person, including trans women: do you believe trans women are never closeted?
How do people treat trans men? Under cissexist patriarchy, what are the lived experiences of trans men? That's what everyone is talking about.
Also: "a structurally patriarchal society does not benefit non-passing trans men, but" is such a brazen admittance of ignorance it's, like, actually crazy. I would honestly rather die than embarrass myself this bad, even on anon. Learn what systemic oppression is.
@thetiniestastronaut ding ding ding!!
I wasn't going to add this to the original post because imo it's not really a premise worth entertaining in the first place. But like. I pass! And as a passing trans man, I do still experience systemic oppression, including (but not limited to):
I work in a "pink collar" field because that's what I was always pushed towards
I am paid significantly less than both of my coworkers (one cis man, one cis woman) despite the fact that I am the only one of us who has any relevant qualifications whatsoever (not an exaggeration)
I have been denied necessary medical care because it is "for women", and my legal gender marker is "male" (both my doctors and insurance knew I was a trans man with relevant anatomy)
I have been denied top surgery revision because insurance deemed my chest "masculine enough", despite continued dysphoria. This went as far as court, where the judge decided that my dysphoria isn't "harm" and therefore doesn't "count" under state laws that are supposed to protect transgender healthcare.
I have received dehumanizing, fetishizing comments and treatment from cis and trans people alike: one (trans) person went as far as publicly joking about the ways I might masturbate. One person, nearly ten years older than me, pressured me into a relationship for this reason.
Constant threats of losing my entire career due to the bigoted conflation of Being Transgender with sexually victimizing children, and the conflation of being a trans man specifically with "brainwashing" young girls into transitioning.
And I'm just limiting this to like, real-life examples off the top of my head that I can definitively say were/are transphobic. There have been plenty of things that I can only say were probably related, or that can't be summarized in a tidy little bullet point.
Do people sometimes mistake me for cis and momentarily treat me with a little more respect than I got pre-transition? Idk, probably. But it doesn't materially impact my life in any meaningful way. It's not a systemic privilege. It's an accident of a system that is designed, and desires, to treat me far worse.
Once again this asker conflates "interpersonal treatment while mistaken for a cis person" with literally anything else that goes on in life.
A passing stealth trans man still needs gender affirming medical care, other medical care, and legal rights.
Which trans people as a class do not have easy access to.
"Male privilege" describes someone who has access to all of them, and also is not at risk of losing conditional favourable interpersonal treatment nor have his gender revoked.
"Favourable interpersonal treatment while stealth" is such a limited benefit, that it is entirely unreasonable how much of a fuss a lot of people make about it. It seems that the actual goal for inciting this discussion over and over is not to genuinely talk about it, but to push down trans men talking about our oppression.
everything might seem like shit but at least the kids dont know what transmeds are…
like i was describing my coming out experience during peak transmed/truscum activity and the kid was like… the fuck is a true scum?

Rather than distinctly male or female, the human brain is much more like the heart, kidneys and lungs – basically the same no matter the sex of the body it's in.
rb to make a biological essentialist mad <3
“This collapse is a telltale sign of a problem known as publication bias. Small, early studies which found a significant sex difference were likelier to get published than research finding no male-female brain difference.”
People do not see masculinity as being as fluid and complex and nuanced as femininity and it’s annoying as hell. Because of patriarchy’s stranglehold on masculinity and radfem theory’s stranglehold on queer spaces, people really think with their whole heart that only femininity is subversive or experimental, or frankly, queer, and that masculinity is only a power grab and nothing more. Embarrassing!
