preschool daveed diggs in rainbow leggings reblog if you agree
âOh man, um, alright so look, when I was in pre school we were supposed to do like a performance for the parents, and I didnât want to do it, so my mom talked to the teachers, she came back, and she said you donât have to do it, but you have to do something. And I said I want to a gymnastics routine with my dad. And a couple days later my dad showed up with me in matching rainbow tights and we did this gymnastics routine in front of the parents at the pre-school. And the most important thing about that story to me is that one my mom gave me permission to do something that everyone else wasnât doing and two my dad supported me and made it possible, and I think a lot of us are here because people in our lives did that so thank you mom and dad who are here tonight, thatâs so crazy. Thank you to Jalene, who I love who is also here, my brother Malcolm who is watching at home. Shoot all of Oakland, California, Rafa, Chanaka, Bay Area stand up. Lin, Tommy you already know, Alex, Andy I mean what were you thinking? Thank you so much for allowing this to happen. Jeffrey, Sandy, just, Oscar, everybody, just thank you so much I cannot thank you all enough, this is so crazy.â
Daveed Diggs (via disneydorito)
âItâs like existing in a parallel universe,â he recalled of a trip to Los Angeles just before Hamiltonâs Broadway debut. âI would park in places that I had parked a million times and go into buildings I had maybe done auditions in in the tiny room in the front, and as soon as I walked in someone at the desk is like, âDaveed Diggs! So excited youâre here. Would you like some water?â â Whether the siren call of Hollywood means his days at Hamilton are numbered remains to be seen; he and the rest of the original cast are currently renegotiating their contracts. âI donât know the answer,â he says pensively. âI love doing the show. My reason to leave wouldnât be because I got excited about doing something better. Itâs just because Iâve lived this life for a long time and ⌠You need to refill yourself. You need to have other experiences.â In his pre-Hamilton days, Diggs taught middle school poetry (incorporating a celebrated district-wide rap curriculum), and struggled to make ends meet with regional theater. About four years ago, he leapt at the paycheck for a McDonaldâs steak-and-egg biscuit commercial (thank you, fan site, Hamilbabes). âIt was so necessary,â he recalls. âI had no money.â At times in New York, he couch-surfed or slept on the subway, but neither his parents nor his longtime girlfriend ever suggested he abandon the whole acting thing to take a paying office job. âYouâre not guaranteed particularly high returns when you decide to take on this lifestyle and itâs not like there was much of a cushion growing up. We were poor,â Diggs says. âBut it was always the most important to my parents that I do something that I love.â This was especially true of Diggsâs father, who is a bus driver in San Francisco. âMy dad, particularly, for the last 15 years has worked a job that he hates.â Diggs says that the success of Hamilton, and the rush of his Tony nomination, is dedicated to his parents. That the stars aligned for Hamilton, he says, was a magical âaccident.â Diggs, a friend of Miranda and Hamilton director Thomas Kail from the rap group Freestyle Love Supreme, came to mind for the roles of Lafayette/Hamilton since the showâs early stages. âWho has the charisma? Whoâs a better rapper than Hamilton? Oh, itâs Daveed,â Kail told Charlie Rose. âHe has a relationship with the audience, which is chemical. He walks on the stage and they stop looking at anything else but him.â Diggs so wholly inhabits the roles, that even as an alumna of the Jefferson-founded University of Virginia (where there is a serious Jefferson God complex), Iâve begun to picture Diggsâs face when the founding father comes to mind. âPeople who love Jefferson are like, âJeffersonâs the best in the show.â And people who hate Jefferson are like, âI love how youâre really sticking it to Jefferson out there,â â Diggs laughs as we (totally un-coincidentally) approach East Harlemâs Thomas Jefferson Park. âItâs gratifying to me because thatâs what we were trying to doâcomplicate it enough that you couldnât zero in on hero or villain.â For Diggs, Jefferson is a less ambiguous figure in real life. âHeâs a piece of shit,â Diggs says bluntly, as we stroll by Thomas Jefferson Pool, across the street from the public Thomas Jefferson Houses. âThe more I read about him, the more I imagine that his views on slavery were, potentially, more conflicted than we like to give him credit for âŚâ He trails off. âHe didnât act on it, so it doesnât matter.â Jefferson is blasted for owning slaves in Hamilton, and at the BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher last year, Diggs brilliantly rapped that, âplaying these dead presidents, Iâm getting my reparations.â But Jeffersonâs romantic relationship with Sally Hemings is also referenced playfully in Hamiltonâs cheeky, boogie-woogie anthem, âWhatâd I Miss?â (âThereâs a letter on my desk from the President ⌠Sally be a lamb, darlinâ, wonâtcha open it?â) Stepping out of his rap wheelhouse to sing that song still terrifies Diggs on a nightly basis. âJeffersonâs not afraid of anything,â he says. âDaveed Diggs is a very nervous person.â Iâd never guess that from walking laps with him, old ladyâstyle, in Thomas Jefferson the park. Even in the eye of the Hamilton hurricane, the cockiness of onstage alter egos hasnât quite rubbed off. âIâm in this moment right now where we get to be choosy and obviously that wonât last forever,â he says. âAt some point, Iâll do more McDonaldâs commercials if I have to.â

For the first time in 70 years, all Musical acting awards went to people of color!
reading that daveed diggs didnât think there was a place for him on broadway and that he assumed he was just a temporary stand-in during the hamilton workshops and even its run at the public breaks my heart. i just wanna squish his lil face between my hands and tell him âyouâre beautiful, youâre smart, youâre extremely talented, and your heart is big. anywhere in the world would be lucky to have you, not the other way around.â
UPDATE: daveed is still beautiful, heâs still smart, heâs still extremely talented, and his heart is still big. and so is his TONY AWARD.Â
daveed diggs winning this tony as someone who felt theatre had no place for him (HE DIDNâT HAVE AN AGENT, GOD) is genuinely the most important thing in the WORLD to me. i love him. he inspires me to keep at engaging with theatre. I LOVE DAVEED DIGGS
