Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek could see that she was debating between something as she shook his hand. He tilted his head and followed her to the closet, smiling softly at the sight of his jacket. âA little extreme,â he said with a small shake of his head, but he was happy that the teacher had taken his request seriously.
He took a step back and nodded his head. âWell, has her behavior improved?â He was curious, wondering if this woman knew tricks he had never heard of. âShe seems to be the same at home, reckless and hyperactive, similar to someone I once knew.â He sighed to himself for a moment at the thought.
âShe hasnât fought with any of her classmates unless they started it. I would say that is a marked improvement.â Claire smiled, fond, because Talia really was doing better. âShe has snapped her teeth, and thereâs been a few incidents of other kids saying sheâs growled at them, but she hasnât displayed any outright aggression since we employed the jacket during nap times. But it has only been a week.âÂ
It was satisfying, seeing a plan work out as sheâd hoped it would. âI have noticed that she is can be a bit hyperactive, but she is a child and that often comes with the territory. Recklessness as well.â She hummed, thinking through her next offer. She still wanted to let Talia play with Euclid; the hound would appreciate being able to play with someone who could keep up with him. âOther than hyperactive and reckless, how is she behaving at home?â
âââI look like an off duty cop. Like, the kind whoâs in way over his head. I should audition for Law and Order or some shit.â
âYou look handsome. And anyway, thatâs what weâre going for, Ben. At least you donât look like a junkie. Embrace it.â
Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek pursed his lips together to stop himself from laughing at the sight of the folder flying across the desk. He had a certain talent with startling people. He had noticed it more and more as he got older. The teacher composed herself quickly, causing him to tilt his head a little as he stepped forward.
He wanted to laugh from her words, but kept his face stern. âI see,â he said with no real emotion to his voice, âI would hope the jacket is being well taken care of?â He took her hand, shaking it a bit firmly as he waited for her answer.
The firm grip alternately made her want to make herself smaller, prove she wasnât a threat and that he held the more powerful position in the room, and also rip her hand away and stand straighter because it was her classroom that they were in and she wasnât going to let herself be intimidated. Claire knew from her younger life that making herself seem like a non-threat was different from submitting, but in the face of the (assumed) werewolf the two things felt the same. So she did neither thing and carefully extricated her hand from his so she could turn back to the closet that held the jacket.
âIf youâd come this way, youâll see that itâs perfectly safe.â She pulled the closet open so he could see. The jacket was on a hanger, wrapped in a large plastic bag with the end tied shut; she wasnât kidding around about keeping the scent as pure and strong as she could manage. Claire looked up at him with a small smile, her default expression, though she was honestly seeking his approval as she spoke again. âI hope this is acceptable. Talia gets the jacket every day at nap time and then it goes back into the closet. I lock the closet door at the end of each day before I leave.âÂ
Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek didnât know what this teacher had been thinking. She obviously knew his kind and believed she had the answers to his problems of parenting a young wolf. It made him feel slightly threatened, but he couldnât pull Talia from school. It was the only break he had.
This encounter made him dread the parent teach conference that he was attending a week later, his hand hesitating on the door before he pulled it open and walked in. âI see my daughter hasnât been kicked out of school yet,â he commented as he got farther in the room, âis there a certain reason for that?â
Sheâd just finished with little Antoniaâs parents, updating them on their daughterâs startlingly high reading comprehension. Sheâd given them an updated book list with chapter books that she felt would likely be appropriate for the little girl, and smiled as she shuffled her folders around. Derek Hale entering her classroom surprised her enough that Taliaâs folder went flying across her desk. Luckily, it stopped precariously at the edge without actually spilling its contents all over the floor.Â
âMister Hale,â she replied, trying to catch her breath. She smiled at him and nodded. âOf course! Your jacket worked just as Iâd hoped it would. Itâs not the perfect solution, but Talia is managing much better. Sheâs so much more focused in class and has only snapped her teeth at a classmate once this week.â She stood from her desk as she spoke and moved a step toward him, hand outstretched to shake his as she did with all the parents.

Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek felt his jaw tighten. He didnât want to home school Talia. He was not meant to be a teacher. That was why she was placed into this class in the first place. If worse came to worse, he might just have to bribe the principal to enroll his daughter into some kind of special services while getting her education.
"I see," he was reaching for the door when her last words caught his attention, a scowl coming over his features. She clearly knew more than he wanted her to. "Scent marking?" He sounded disgusted and confused. "Iâm not sure what you are trying to get at, but my daughter is not an animal. I will do no such thing.â And with that, he was leaving the room before she could say anything else.
Claire frowned. "I don't think she's an animal," she said to herself as he left, and then sighed. That could have gone better, but it could have gone so much worse. Had she read the situation wrong? Lunch recess was almost over and she needed to collect her class from the playground. Before she did that, Claire took Mister Hale's jacket and quickly put it in a bag and into the closet behind her desk where she kept her own things; she didn't want it losing the pack smell any more than it had to.Â
For all that it hadn't gone as smoothly as she would have liked, Claire had to admit that she was glad that it had moved quickly. She shook herself out, rolled her shoulders, and put on her best smile. It wasn't ideal, not getting to recharge for a few minutes after talking to a parent, but she was good at her job and the kids counted on her to be upbeat and fun. "Ready or not," she murmured and headed out of her classroom.
"Alright, Iâll trust you for now. But when I scream it is all your fault."
"But C... Screaming's half the fun."
If you had to chose. Hypothetically, between a turtle and a kitten which would you rather comes in the car with us and my dog?
Hypothetically? A turtle wouldnât handle the travelling very well. A kitten, on the other hand, would do great. But would Ulysses actually put up with another animal in the car? Thatâs the real question, Chloe.
"Well, I know you wanted one. Since we are in my car now I didnât see a reason not to get you one."
"You are the best! Ahh! This is so great. I'm glad that Ulysses will be okay with a kitten."
Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek felt a bit naked without the jacket, a small sigh escaping his lips. It was the last bit of his father that he had and it was hard for him to give it up. âAnd what happens to the children that canât handle being away from home even when theyâre older?â He was curious, wondering if the teacher had ever experienced something like this before.
His fingertips brushed over his scruff for a moment as he was in thought. âLetâs hope it works out that way. Iâm sure Iâll be getting a call if it doesnât.â He got up from the edge of the desk and took a few steps to the door. âIs that all?â
"There are alternative schools, but most children that cannot handle being away from home as they get older often have to be home schooled if they do not end up in the system." She hated to say that. She hated that she even knew that. But it was a fact of life. She'd heard about a fifth grader two towns over that had been removed from school the year before but seemed to be flourishing under the tutelage of their mother.
"It's not the ideal solution, of course, because of socialization and all that... But sometimes it is the only option." She stood as well, and moved to the door as he did, though she kept her distance. "One last thing," Claire said as he was about to leave. "If the jacket improves Talia's moods and focus, you may want to think about scent marking her in the mornings before she comes to school." There. She felt a little better letting him know that she suspected what he might be, what Talia might be, without outright saying it.Â
"You do tend to have good ideaâs. But I donât know if this one counts."
"This one totally counts. Zip-lining will be a blast. Trust me. It's like flying."

Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek felt less threatened as she shrunk back, his expression becoming less stern. Maybe this teacher did have the best intentions out for his daughter, but he could never really trust anyone when raising her. He had done it alone so far and he wasnât one to just take help now even if he did need it. âIâll pass on the idea of the dog and figure it out.â
He watched her rather closely, expecting a different question to fall from her lips. âA jacket?â He rose a brow but didnât hesitate in shrugging off the leather he was currently wearing. He walked to the desk and placed it in front of her. âIâm not exactly sure how this will help. You can use this one for her. It was my fatherâs and she is rather attached to it like I am.â And he definitely didnât want anything bad to happen to his property when it was in Claire or Taliaâs hands.
Claire was surprised by how easily he gave up the jacket, but couldn't decide if that confirmed her werewolf suspicion or not. Either way, she was grateful for the little bit of trust he was showing in her. "I'll be very careful with it, and keep it in the closet when Talia is not using it. Some children don't handle being away from home very well until they're further into their schooling, and sometimes not even then."
She shifted forward a little, looking at him intently. "The comfort of having something from home, something from you, with her during the day might keep her calmer. Think of your jacket as a security blanket, something that will make her feel better when she gets stressed or overwhelmed. It may not seem like it, but I think it will make her feel less alone, more grounded, and it might help with the outbursts." At least, she hoped it would work that way.Â
So what if itâs wrong? It doesnât matter. It feels good. Power. Some say itâll consume you but that all left to be seen. A taste of it thoughâŚ.itâs enough to seek more. Crave more. Want more. He wants more. He needs more. Itâs not that heâs going dark side, per se. No, thereâs nothing dark about power. Darkness comes from how you use it and well, heâs been using it wisely. Not to say that thereâs no body count. Oh, there is and itâs steadily rising. But sacrifices must be made and in the end what he hopes to accomplish is worth so much more than a few lost lives.
Cold? Sure. So what? So what if he kills a few people? So what if he gets a bit carried away. Heâs power hungry and killing? Killing gives him a thrill. That power over anotherâs life isâŚconsuming. Beautiful. Addicting. And he likes getting creative. That parts not necessary but it makes things a bit more interesting. How bloody, how slow, how painfulâŚ.he loves testing the limits of each. But, like heâs said, it all has purpose. Heâs doing his task. Heâs cleansing. Purifying what the low dared to put their hands in.Â
Magic.
A gift. A responsibility from the gods and these common people tarnish it. Turn something so beautiful into something wretched. Throwing the witch down with the common monster all because Mama wanted a Tahoe and a new pair of tits and didnât care how she got it. Animal parts and bodily fluids, itâs all disgusting. Sure some spells require things, sacrifices but what this hellwhores were doing? Kissing the ass of some black eyed fucker for a few cheap tricks. Getting his kind hunted. Forcing his kind into hiding. It was his ancestors who protected them and for what? A shop thatâs force to label itself âNew Ageâ or âWiccanâ and sell self-help books and calming teas?
Theyâve been made a joke. Hunters used to flock to them for help. Centuries ago, they worked hand in hand and nowâŚhis kind are hunted down using the very same tools they gave to the hunter to begin with. But no more. No more hiding. No more being hunted. He refuses to stand in the shadow.Â
Heâll re-awaken the Time of the Witch.
Once more people will remember that magic answered the questions first. The gifts of the gods. The first to be there for mankind.
Looking down at his latest victim, Ben smirks wiping his blade on his the manâs shirt. He steps back tucking the blade away and sighing. âYou wanted to play with magic? Well, now you know what real magic is.âÂ
Ben lifts his hand and winks at the other. âApscindo,â he mutters with a flick of the risk. The manâs head flies off and Ben canât help a short chuckle. âDonât mess with things you canât handle.â
Turning, Ben starts to walk out not bothering to clean up the mess. Someoneâll find him. No one will find Ben. He pulls out a cigarette snapping his finger to light it as he walks happily down the dark street. Another blasphemer gone, the world should rejoice.
Claire has been watching for months and her skin crawls every time she sees this. It never gets easier, watching Ben do what he does. She understand his reasoning, on some level, but she does not like it. She doesn't like how he's been tarnishing himself further and further as time ticks on.
Her lip curls at the devil worshiper, dead on the ground, body and head separate. It's not that she doesn't agree with Ben's sentiment - it really is better that those abusing what the world has given them are taken care of - but she doesn't approve of him taking matters into his own hands. The demons those lower witches gave themselves over to, well, they'd take care of the lower witches eventually.Â
She hates the death in Ben's wake, hates how it's corrupting his soul. Or, she would if she could hate. She can't, it's not something she's made to do, not since she gave herself over to the seed of angelic Grace that had taken root years ago. All it had taken was getting killed by one of those witches, the ones that use blood and other fluids and dark things as a means to their ends, and God had given her the choice: embrace the Grace and become a warrior, or go on to her own Heaven and know peace. In a strange twist of fate, Claire had chosen the warrior's path and now has her own wings and a sense of purpose.Â
And right now? Ben is her purpose. She follows him silently after a quick burst of will changes the death scene into something that didn't look like the brutal murder it was. Claire doesn't know if he's aware that she's the reason he hasn't gotten caught, hasn't even been a suspect of the things he's done, but she doesn't really care. She'll follow him anyway. She just hopes that there is only one murder on tap for the evening.
Give me a plot about a shy girl being dragged to a bar and getting hit on, where a tattooed guy takes pity on her and rescues her by saying heâs her boyfriend. He walks her home and she realizes heâs not that scary, so she invites him in and they talk. Maybe he falls asleep on her couch and she takes care of his hangover and ohmygoodness it could be so cute?
"ââThat doesnât look like a bed to me." He teases pulling out the rice and finding the ground beef. âOh, weâve got eggs! How does fried rice sound?â
"Oh my gosh, fried rice sounds amazing."Â She laughed to hide her wince as she shifted against the wall. "And anywhere is a bed if you try hard enough," she added as she forced herself to relax.
Parent Teacher Talks | Claire and Derek
Derek stared, not sure if this was some kind of joke. âSheâs a child,â his words were slow and a bit harsh. Heâd never have Talia wrestle some dog and it wasnât because he feared for the safety of his daughter, he knew she could hold her own. He worried something would happen to the animal. âIâm not getting some mutt so that my daughter can calm down.â
Her next words made his muscles tense. âAre you threatening that my daughter will be kicked out?â That was the last thing he needed. He couldnât teach Talia how to be a human by himself. âMy family built this town and still has strong connections to those who run it. I would hate to have to call them because some school couldnât do their job.â His eyes narrowed at her, not sure why she was looking at him so intensely. âI will put her in more classes and she will no longer be a problem.â
Claire tried not to shrink back, but she couldn't help it. She made herself smaller, just enough to show that she really wasn't a threat. "I'm not threatening anything. I'm just telling you the truth. If she doesn't get a handle on herself, she's going to be removed from my class, which is the last thing I want. Talia is a brilliant little girl, and a joy when she's not causing trouble. If there is anything, absolutely anything, that I can do to make my classroom a better environment for her... As long as it's not something that would cause a health issue for the other students, I'll do it."Â
It was dangerous to offer, but she really did like having Talia Hale in her class. The girl was a bundle of energy, and smart to boot, and she brightened Claire's day when she was being good. "Please tell me if I'm stepping over the line asking this, but..." She cut herself off, and sat up straighter. "If you could leave a jacket, or something, for Talia during naptime, I think that would really help out. She's usually doesn't act up until she's been here for a few hours and I think she just needs something that will keep her from getting overwhelmed by everything that happens in class."Â
