MisterWives, Marian Hill, Handsome Ghost // Brooklyn, NY // Music Hall of Williamsburg
In all of my years of going to various concerts and events, I canât recall a single performance that had more raw emotion and passion than what I witnessed during MisterWivesâ sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. The show began with Handsome Ghost serenading all of Brooklyn to a fantastic balance of synth and acoustic styles. You know an artist is truly unique if you try to describe their sound through similar artists or songs, and canât think of any. The original tunes and catchy cover of The 1975 were flawless and left me craving a full set from the dynamic duo. Â Next to hit the stage were the wildly talented members of Marian Hill. Lead singer Samantha Gongolâs slow and enchanting dances to her own music would have been enough to make a deaf person happy to attend the show.
Once the opening bands had cleared off the stage, the packed roomâs excitement began to rise. The instant rays of elated energy from Mandy Lee and the rest of MisterWives rapidly replaced the gloomy drizzle on the surrounding streets. Each song carried the show to a new level of intimacy as we fell madly in love with the lovely artists on stage. I would wait outside in the freezing, rainy streets of Brooklyn again in a heartbeat to see Misterwivesâ set again; exactly as it was Tuesday night. Even the sorrows of the most heartwrenching ballad Mandy had to offer were lifted when she informed us that she wrote that song before she met her best-friends-turned-band-mates.
The moment the concert ended, for the first time in my entire life of carrying around a small notebook and pen in my camera bag, I was compelled to take out the journal and write down the thoughts spinning around my head. I hope to always remember EVERY detail of what happened on stage and how infinite it made me feel. Everything, from the pushups Mandy did between songs in an attempt to stand up to the patriarchy, to the chills I got when the bassist, Will began crying as he looked out into his hometown venue. âTalentedâ is a massive understatement, and I would very highly recommend seeing MisterWives before their tour is over.Â
