meeting the parents!
Pairing: Mike wheeler x fem!cheerleader!harrington!reader
Summary: where you meet Mikeâs parents
Warnings: none (I think)
ââââ
Youâd been in some nerve-wracking situations before â championship tryouts, the time you accidentally kicked a megaphone into Coach Woodsâ shins, that whole period where Steve wouldnât stop hovering because your first boyfriend wore too much leather and looked like heâd mug a priest.
But this? Meeting your boyfriendâs parents must be the most terrifying thing youâve ever done. You were never great with parents, your own were never around much always on a work trip or another anniversary vacation (how many anniversaryâs can one couple celebrate be serious? Theyâd go on holiday for the âfirst time we sneezed at the same timeâ if they could)
So growing up, youâd never had much practice with the whole âparental approvalâ thing. It wasnât that there wasnât any â there was. Just⊠not for you. Steve got all of it: the âyour grades are badâ speeches, the âweâre going to send you to boarding schoolâ threats, the endless nagging about chores, curfews, and God forbid he ever got a B instead of an A.
You, on the other hand, were your parentsâ perfect little angel. Mostly because they never actually had to do anything with you. Your grades were good. You never got into trouble. You didnât demand attention. You just⊠existed in the background. Left behind with a fridge full of untouched casserole and a note that said Behave! with a smiley face. When you knocked on the door and Karen wheeler opened it she looked at you like you were an alien. Which wouldâve made you nervous if you werenât already at the brink of being nervous. She blinked, then blinked again âoh myâŠyou must be y/n!â
âYes! Itâs so nice to meet you Mrs wheeler!â You said as she shook your hand
Karen shook my hand, her smile growing strangely warm. âOh, sweetheart, call me Karen. Please. Come in. Come in.â
âMike! Y/n is here!â Within five seconds footsteps thundered down the stairs
He practically flies down the stairs, taking the last two steps in one jump, hair tousled, shirt slightly wrinkled like he got ready too quickly.
His eyes land on me and soften instantly.
âHey,â he breathes out, smiling.
That stupid little smile he gets â the one that makes him look like heâs trying not to grin too hard â yeah, that one.
âHey,â I say back, trying not to mirror it but failing completely. He slipped his hand into mine and guided me to the living room where his father sat in his lazy chair âsweetheartâ Karen spoke up âthis is Mikeâs girlfriend y/nâ
It took a second for ted to look away from the tv and towards me âhuhâ he then said âyou sure?â
âDadâ Mike groaned
Ted turned to me âYou can still runâ i chuckled akwardly and Mike groaned again âoh my godâ
âTed donâtâ Karen scolded, she turned to look at Mike âwhere are your sisters?â Mike shrugged âi donât know, hollyâs in her room i thinkâ
âWell call themâ Iâm sure theyâd love to meet your girlfriend!â
âMom letâs not make this a whole thingââ
Karen rolled her eyes âMicheal, go get your sistersâ he looked to you for a quick second and you nodded your head to upstairs making him scoff and walk upstairs, when you were left alone in the kitchen with Mikeâs mother she started asking all kind of questions âhow did you and Mike meet?â To which you answered that youâd been struggling with algebra and he had been your assigned tutor
Karenâs eyes widen as if this is the cutest thing sheâs ever heard.
âOh that is just precious,â she says, practically swooning. âMike never told us! I didnât even know he tutored.â
âHeâs really good at it,â I say, smiling at the memory. âHe was patient. He didnât make me feel stupid.â Karen smiled fondly at that
Within five seconds of that sentence leaving my mouth, Mike rushes back down the stairs like he teleported, Holly riding his shoulders and Nancy trailing behind him with an amused smirk.
âHey,â he says to me first â always to me first â before snapping toward his mother with a frown. âWhat did you say to her? Did you embarrass me?â
Karen scoffs so hard she physically flicks a dish towel at him. âNo, Micheal. I was simply asking a question.â
Mike whirls back to me immediately. âShe didnât, right? She didnât embarrass me?â
I blink. ââŠMike, no. She did not.â
He narrows his eyes like heâs not entirely convinced. âRight, but are you saying that because you feel like you have to? Or because she actually didnât?â
Before I can answer, Nancy groans under her breath, âJesus Christ, Mike.â
Then her face brightens when she looks at me. âHey, N/N.â
The nickname makes me smile instantly. âGood to see you again, Nance.â
Karen pauses mid-step, brows furrowing.
âWait â you two know each other?â
Nancy and I glance at each other, both a little surprised she doesnât remember. âYea, i dated her brother a couple years back. Donât you remember? Steve?â Nancy asks
Thenâ
âOh! Oh!â Her eyes light up. âOf course! Youâre Steveâs sister! I completely forgot he had a youngerâ well, not forgot, I justâ oh my goodness, youâve grown up!â You suppose you couldnât blame her really you had grown up
The last time Karen Wheeler saw you, you were, what? Twelve? And still firmly in your awkward phase â braces, awful bangs Steve insisted were âtotally fine,â and a habit of tripping over nothing. Now you were⊠well, not that
Holly looked towards me âyou have great hair, can you do mine like that?â
You nodded âyea sure iâll have get into Steveâs hairspray stash though cause Iâve ran outâ
Nancy picked a muffin from the tray in front off her âhow did that cheerleading thing go anyway, did you make captain?â Nancy said changing the subject
You shake your head. âNo. Coach said I was too young and gave me the whole âmaybe next yearâ speech.â
Nancy nods sympathetically as you add, a bit brighter, âBut I did make flyer this year.â
Nancyâs eyes widen proudly. âSeriously? Thatâs great! Congrats.â
Before you can thank her, Mike snaps his head toward you like you just revealed you were secretly royalty.
âYou didnât tell me that,â he says, eyebrows high. âThatâs⊠good? Right?â
He looks almost worried he might be responding wrong, like cheerleading has secret rankings he doesnât know.
You bite back a laugh. âYes, Mike. Itâs good.â
His shoulders relax instantly. âOkay. Good. Great. I meanâ youâreâ thatâs amazing.â
Nancy snorts into her muffin. âSmooth, Mike.â
âMike didnât tell us youâre a cheerleader! I used to be a cheerleader myself yâknowâ Karen says, mike scoffs âand this is exactly why i didnât tell youâ
Nancy leans toward you with a conspiratorial smirk. âMom still has her old cheer uniform somewhere. Sheâs gonna try to show it to you.â
Karen perks up. âOh! I do! Thatâs a wonderful ideaââ
âABSOLUTELY NOT,â Mike cuts in, voice breaking slightly at the end.
Holly giggles. âMikeyâs embarrassed.â
âCan you blame me!?â Mike snapped looking towards his youngest sister, he then tugged on your arm guiding you up the stairs âletâs go to my roomâ
âMichealââ Mrs wheeler tried âdoor open Mike!â
âMom!â Mike groaned and you chuckled
Nancy calls after you, voice dripping with amusement, âHave fun, but not too much fun!â
Mike almost trips on the last step.
Youâre still laughing when he shoots back, âshut up Nancy!â When you enter his room it exactly what you expected it to be
A mess. A very Mike mess.
Posters everywhere â sci-fi movies, Star Wars, a couple of bands Thereâs a half-finished D&D campaign spread all over his desk, dice scattered like he got distracted mid-battle. His bed isnât made. His sneakers are kicked off in two completely different directions. His walkie-talkie sits on the nightstand like itâs as essential as breathing.
And thereâs that smell â not bad, not gross. Just⊠Mike. Warm fabric, pencil shavings, a little cologne he pretends not to wear. Mike kicks a stray sock under his bed instantly. âI was gonna clean.â
âYou were not.â
He points at you accusingly. âYou donât know that.â You chuckle and walk over to him wrapping your arms around his waist âyour familyâs sweetâ
Mike scoffed âtheyâre a nightmare, my dad didnât even talk to you and my mom wouldnât shut upâ
âJust donât think Iâm weird because they are okay?â
You chuckle softly, tilting your head to look up at him, the warmth in your eyes making him pause. âMike,â you say gently, âyou are weird.â He scoffed âthanksâ
âYou know i like you because youâre weird, not despite off itâ
âI like the way you care, the way you panic over tiny things, the way you talk a mile a minute when youâre excited. Youâre⊠you, and I like that.â
Mike swallows, his usual confident bravado giving way to a soft vulnerability. âI just⊠I donât want to mess this up.â
âOh câmon, thereâs nothing that can get me away from you Michael wheelerâ
