⚸ bi sapphic shining in bright moon ⏾

things below are for the 1st flag (left), some of the meaning is lost for the simplified ones.

colors:

the turquoise color is inspired by the 8-color rainbow flag's "art and magic" turquoise stripe. violet represents the violet flower, womanhood, and femininity. yellow represents hope and happiness. white represents new beginnings and love/connection (community.) white is one of the centermost colors in reference to the trans flag. the yellow and white stripes beside each other also reference the nonbinary flag’s first two stripes. each color was picked from images of real violets and violas.

design:

a lot of violets fade to white at the center, so i thought it would be fun to include a gradient the flag's colors (violet/turquois/yellow/white) for the largest violet's silhouette. the transition of this gradient symbolizes the variations of feminine experience/identities culminating into love or a sense of community. this larger violet holds the smaller violet (violet/turquois/yellow, re:color meanings).

Forget-me-nots work well because of their coloring and because (contrary to biphobic stereotypes) a lot bi people are incredibly loyal. Not to mention, they also coincidentally have historical ties, with bisexual historical figure Olive Custance’s poem “Forget-Me-Not” being one of five poems in her poem series “Songs of a Fairy Princess”, written about her love for her bisexual husband Lord Alfred “Bosie” Douglas (aka Oscar Wilde’s lover). (Poem attached below).

Fascinatingly, Bosie and Olive are two historical figures we can be nearly sure were bi, which tends to be untrue of most historical figures because of how survival messes with sexuality. The reason we can be so certain of this actually has to do with these poems! As the title “songs of a fairy princess” and one of the subsequent poems “the fairy prince” suggests (and the fact that they both used those to lovingly refer to one another in letters), Olive and Bosie were both aware the other was queer or a “fairy”, and their queerness likely largely brought them together. This, combined with the fact that Bosie had been notoriously difficult to beard (likely due to him being “too picky” because he actually had a taste in women, plus the fact that he ofc had p strong internalized biphobia that caused him to resent his attraction towards women because it was more acceptable to be mlw than mlm at the time), some of Bosie’s own poems, and ofc the fact that the two had both mlm and wlw relationships makes the two of them some of the few historical figures we can be nearly certain were actually bi and not dating the other sex out of survival. My only concern regarding using forget-me-nots is that they’re ofc also a popular veteran symbol, so that could get confusing / controversial.

The other flower I think works well is white lilies, because they represent purity symbolically, but they are also admittedly sexy as hell. I think this also works well to combat the typical bi stereotype. Also, I’m not entirely certain this is untrue for forget-me-nots, but white lilies are one of the flowers that tends to be “perfectly bisexual”, which in this context unfortunately means something a bit closer to intersex, where the flowers have both sex organs and they both work, but it’s still cool nonetheless! White lilies also have their own connection to Bosie actually, as they play a role in his most popular poem, aptly (though admittedly likely coincidentally) titled “Two Loves”.
