During the 6 years Sumi assumed Touya was dead, she also lost her own mother less than a year after him, and was taken by her uncle Aizawa to the HPSC under the instructions left to him.
There, Sumi was paired with none other than Keigo Takami, whom she was told to call Hawks. Unbeknownst to her, she was Hawks very first real assignment, to be her silent handler for the HPSC.
Kitten was MISERABLE. This was not the life she had expected to live, she was fit, but not like HIM, she had basic training in defense and some offense, but not like this. And Hawks was demanding, always smiling and drove her insane.
However, within a year a very different Sumi has evolved, and she is as close as can be to her partner Hawks, having trauma bonded with him just as the HPSC had planned. Not only was this coming along just splendidly, they went as far as to create Project Griffon.
She was destined to be Hawks partner in EVERY way, but the funny thing about fate is, this kitty can change it. Her Maneki Neko quirk is powerful enough to change good or bad fortune, what is to stop her from writing her own destiny?

Despite popular opinion, I really do not see him having all too much experience with relationships beyond casual sex—and even then, that is so far and few between.
He is one of, if not the most self-conscious member of the league of villains and he comes with a lot of baggage but honestly who wouldn't if they had his past?
Getting this man to accept compliments is a losing battle. He will think you are lying to his face.
When you first got together he would always stop your hands midair when you wanted to caress his face.
Before you even had the chance to touch his face really.
He doesn't talk about it but he is always in some form of pain due to his skin and his continued use of his quirk.
He hates his father so much. There's only one thing that he thinks is worse. Becoming Enji Todoroki.
That fear has followed him all throughout his life.
This means that sometimes he will forget you're his actual partner and not a means to an end to get back at his father by proving he is better than him.
But when he comes around he realises that he really doesn't want to be like his father and this lapse in his judgement actually fuels him and his vengeance more.
It really is a brutal cycle for him.
But depending on how you handle it effects how he sees you.
If you handle it well and keep forgiving him he may form some type of toxic codependency with you.
Despite his flaws he really does care, he just shows it in a very Dabi way.
He will use his quirk to keep you warm even though it hurts him.
He will steal your favourite meals from the closest place to you depending on where the league are hiding out at the time. Even if he doesn't like it himself he will happily watch you eat.
He will always act annoyed no matter what but if you pay really close attention sometimes you can see a smile tugging at the corner of his lips as he watches you do the things you enjoy most in this world.
Suddenly his goal isn't just taking down his father and the barrage of other fake heroes anymore
No. His goal changes but only slightly.
From then on his ideal world isn't a world without heroes on its own, its a world where he can see you enjoy the things you love all the time.
So much yes, these are so on pointe, characteristically accurate. Humanizing. He’s no monster. It would be difficult, but one person could change everything.

What a year it’s been. Sumi has grown and evolved so much! Her lore, from her parents, relationships, love spanning over two decades between her and Touya- I’m so proud of my kitten!
Before the reunion and rekindling of Lucky Flame, there was Claw & Talon. Two of the best up and coming pro heroes in training within the HPSCs youth training program. From age 15-19, Sumi and Keigo were inseparable. At first, forced by the HPSC by way of adjacent dorms and constant team up training. Sumi DESPISED Hawks, feeling so torn apart after losing her best friend Touya, then her mother and rejected by her yakuza father all within a years time. Now paired with Hawks, she feels a complete loss of control. What she doesn’t know is that he is struggling as well, with his very first top secret assignment: her. The HPSC fears the unknown abilities of Sumi’s fortune quirk, and tasked Hawks with being her handler, without her knowledge. He not only has to train with her, report all her behaviors to them, he also has to EARN HER TRUST, and her friendship. This backfires spectacularly when he finally confesses at age 19.
This takes time but he eventually succeeds, for those years they were a paired team. Eventually they shift from rivals to friends, and friends to best friends, but unknown to Sumi- Hawks feels much more.
