traveling to uganda was challenging for us - not because of the tasks of the race in particular, but because we felt uncomfortable gallivanting & competing around a place where queer people like us didn’t have the same safety & privileges we had just because we were on a tv show. during our time there, i couldn’t help but think about the queer refugees i profiled for pride in 2017, & what how their experiences were still something many queer people face today. we raced with them in mind, & hoping to bring home a win so that we could use the moment to discuss how despite a government’s laws & stances, the people had been kind, welcoming, and loving toward us, & that viewers at home shouldn’t judge the locals, but instead support organizations like the International Rescue Committee to help those queer locals still fighting for their freedoms. proud to place first with my race partner Korey, and to head to the next leg of the race. <3
