I was showing pangur videos of puppies in an attempt to inoculate her, and she immediately began to act very predatory. swaying like a snake, chattering, trying to catch them through the screen, etc.
I think she sees cats as People and humans as People, but dogs are definitely not People to her. this is probably why she's had bad stress reactions to meeting new cats in the past, but not to dogs/rabbits/roombas/etc. they are just things.
so in the 2003 Aquaman series they introduce a new backstory for archvillain Black Manta in which the entire reason for his (hyper)fixation on destroying Aquaman's life was severely maltreated autism, which Aquaman then cures him of with his magic water hand to completely redeem him. and this is obviously insanely stupid and ill-conceived and genuinely hateful, but given all of that, this is still one of the funniest speech balloons i've ever read in a comic. me @ myself when i remember how i acted in high school or whatever

i'm crying laughing. for some reason i thought this was maybe the conclusion to a years long dramatic story arc i just didn't have the context for. but no. this shit just happens.
this arc starts in september 2012.
his future self comes out of a time portal and says "hey shit's fucked and it's my fault. go and fix this by not fucking the future."
he gets caught by future rebels who hate him because his future self fucked the future.
escapes and punches his future self.
his future self shoots a rebel and the time machine fucking breaks for basically no reason and threatens to destroy all of reality
and his future self gets shot before *he* can make the dramatic heroic sacrifice to stop it.
i cannot express just how much of a Shit Just Happens plot this is. this takes place in-universe over the course of like a couple hours if that. Imagine for a second that you were keeping up with ctrl alt del in 2012. Okay now that you've imagined that i'm gonna give you a minute to stop laughing. Okay now that you're done laughing, just fucking, imagine. You'd have no clue the story was building to any kind of big dramatic conclusion until the literal last possible page??!?! this is such a "oh god i really don't want to be writing CAD anymore" ending but the series was fucking rebooted after this so that can't've been it.

but the thing is: only *most* got filled to some extent

because there used to be dragons
and now their niche is just *empty*
it's like i can feel the gap they left, in everything from open grassland ecosystems to isolated islands; the world we know is shaped by the absence of a truly big flying predator
no bird could ever fill their niche, because of plain and simple anatomical constraints
because they cannot use their wings to jump
