In this world, everyone is assigned a role to play at birth. These roles may change over time but one stays absolute: The Chosen One.
Most refer to others by their roles. Butcher Number 1, Tradesman Number 2, Villager Number 69, and others. But, many stay nameless. Many have no roles. Many werenât important.
You werenât them. You were born as âLove Interestâs Sisterâ. You resented your role. Diminished to just a mere sister. A minor character thrown over the side when the actual story takes off. You made sure to not direct the hatred towards your sister. She was young and naĂŻve, so enamored at the prospect of falling in love with the hero. You suppose it couldâve been worse.
As you grew older, you developed a love for brewing potions. There was something soothing about lighting a fire, stirring the pot, slicing up ingredients and mixing them together to create something spectacular. By early adulthood- your role has shifted from a mere sister of someone important, to âThe Greatest Potioneerâ. You were happier with that. You had a title to be proud of.
As you grew, gaining more customers and popularity, you met him. The famed Chosen One. The one who was destined to marry your sister. The one who was destined to save the world. You did not like him one bit.
Every word he said was dripping with disdain and uninterest. Filled with sarcasm and arrogance. Said that you were just the nearest potioneer he could find. Told you he needed the elixir of luck in less than a week. Boy do you want to scream at him.
Elixir of luck takes years to understand, to learn, to practice. The ingredients were rare, the tools were specific and the steps were numerous, there was no way you could finish on time for his quest.
You desperately try to finish his order on time, you really did, but when he needed it, you were just halfway done. He was furious.
He disrupted your shop, your tools, your books, the half-made potion. He called you insults, said you were a fraud, that you were a nobody, unimportant. He left your shop a mess, disarrayed and broken. You could not believe this was the man who your sister would marry. You could not believe that this was the man-child who would save the world. You could not believe that the man who put a hissy fit in your shop over an unachievable wish was the man who you should trust with your life.
As you tried to clean up the shop, your thoughts spiralled towards endless hatred of him. How dare he come to your shop as if he owned it. How dare he demand you to do such a complicated brew so last minute. How dare he assume that everyone would answer to his every beck and call just because he was born with a title he did not even work for-
You flung your ladle to the side in anger and wept on the floor. How dare he.
As the years go by, you watch as your title begin to change. From 'The Greatest Potioneerâ it dwindled to 'The Fraud Potioneerâ. You despised it. You wanted to wash that disgusting mark off of your wrist. It burned, oh how it burned, when your past customers now talk behind your back. How the formerly friebdly villagers whisper about themselves whenever they see you. Youâve made it a habit to cover your mark whenever a potential customer comes by, but it was no use, rumors only grow.
As the years go by, your hatred for the Chosen One has not dwindled. Oh how you hated him. You ignored the people who talk of his achievements, you avoided the villagers who praise him continuously, you never came to the celebrations held in his honor. It was a waste of time. He was a waste of time.
Soon enough, just as you feared, your mark disappeared overnight. He had finally forgotten you. The madlad had actually done it. You were finally free of the revolting thing. But, it still does not satisfy you. Being nameless, was a great show of disgrace. Especially if you used to have a title. Your hatred for him increased tenfold after that day.
No one talked to you anymore, what would they call you? No one acknowledged you anymore, who would acknowledge a nobody? No one came to visit you anymore, who would they visit? It was like you were invisible, like you did not exist, like you were nothing.
In the little shop at the edge of the small village, isolated from everyone, you hatched your plan. If you were going to go down as a nobody, he should go down as the hero who failed them all. You were not deemed the Greatest Potioneer for no reason. You needed determination, patience, creativity, flexibility and passion. The perfect ingredients to take him down. If you were going to lose, let it be, no one would remember you anyway. If he was to lose, no one would forget it. It would be ingrained im his memory, the stares, the whispers, the glares, the rumors. The horrible, horrible things he put you through. He would suffer like you did and to you, that was a good enough deal. Unnoticed to you, your blank wrist started to fill with ink once again.
Words appeared on your wrist as you poured down ideas and plans on parchment. 'Villainâ it read and when you noticed it the next day, you couldnât be happier.
