the angst of the current moment in the US is only possible if everyone, principled radical anti-imperialist leftists included, actually genuinely believes in the promises of liberalism
There is reason for doubt. Psychoanalysis was born out of a collective retreat from politics on the part of the Viennese intelligentsia. In the 1880s, Austrian liberal hegemony, with its confident ideology of Enlightenment reason and social progress, was threatened by the emergence of new mass parties that channelled various anti-liberal currents ā Christian, antisemitic, socialist and nationalist. In 1895, the electorate in Vienna voted for Karl Lueger, a populist antisemite and reactionary Catholic, as mayor. Emperor Franz Joseph, disliking Luegerās antisemitism, refused to ratify his election; Freud, a liberal and a Jew, smoked a cigar in celebration. But just two years later, in 1897, the emperor bowed to the popular will, and Lueger became mayor, bringing the liberal era to a close. Describing the dying days of 19th-century Austria, the historian Carl Schorske writes: āAnxiety, impotence, a heightened awareness of the brutality of social existence ... these features assumed new centrality in a social climate where the creed of liberalism was being shattered by events.ā Psychoanalysis, then, was born of a moment not dissimilar to our own: a moment when the image of the human as a rational animal seemed fragile if not preposterous, and the progressive liberalism founded on that image was revealed to be dangerously naive. In turning inwards to the drama of the human psyche, Freud was part of an aestheticised culture of feeling and self-cultivation that resulted from political paralysis. In fin-de-siĆØcle Vienna, what mattered was not objective reality but oneās affective response to it. Freud took this focus on inner feeling and instinct, synthesised it with the scientific rationalism of mid-century liberalism, and created in psychoanalysis a theory that at once offered a powerful reckoning with human irrationalism and a welcome refuge from its terrifying political manifestations. As Schorske observes, Freud would put psychoanalysis to use in explaining away his own sense of political guilt. In his pivotal work of 1899, The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud reports one of his own dreams ā he calls it a ārevolutionary phantasyā ā in which he confronts an aristocratic Austrian statesman only to frantically flee the scene. The dream Freud rediscovers the statesman at a train station, now transfigured into Freudās blind and dying father, whom Freud must help to piss into a urinal. On display in the dream is Freudās guilt at having abandoned his youthful ambition to enter politics ā to confront and conquer the old, antisemitic world represented by the aristocrat with the secular, liberal values that his father venerated. But Freud reads the dream as merely the phantastic fulfilment of his wish to take revenge on an overbearing father; a father who had once suggested that the young Freud, as he immodestly urinated in front of his parents, would never amount to anything. On this reading, the dream loses its political specificity; it is simply an expression of the universal desire for patricide. The Oedipus complex, the centrepiece of Freudās mature theory, thus promised to acquit an entire generation of politically disengaged sons from the accusations of their fathers.

im literally always saying this
in retrospect oldboy (2003) was an insane choice for "first movie to watch together as a couple, also immediately after a friend of a friend was murdered"
not having any continuity between the me right now and the past instances of me who had been in many places and seen many things and has to juggle all of those balls together outside of my own memories is actually terrible lol.
I don't really miss people from the past, sharing my life with them was so goddamn stressful that 3 years on I'm still in that weird lightheaded phase of walking around after having a heavy restricting weight taken off my shoulders, what I really want is to have people in my life who've seen my whole story, or at least seen enough of it to see how I've grown and share the memory of things that were important to me. turns out it's very hard to make a clean break from your own life
looking at reviews for the young goethe movie
in case you're wondering what the greatest AMV of all time is, it's this one from 2008.
y'all need to watch this this pride month

how it feels to read mwq when you actually liked visiting vienna
Robert Rauschenberg, Cy + Roman Steps (IāV), 1952, printed ca. 1997
Rauschenbergās pictures of Cy Twombly in Rome.
also I had a dream about a work thing at a really nice hotel in vienna and it was mostly spent trying to wrangle people/meet with people at appointed times and places (mostly heldenplatz) but I noticed a 11 x 14 picasso-african-mask-era-but-with-fauvist-color-palette portrait of musil hanging in a really weird spot under the stairs in the hotel hallway where a huge crowd of teens on a school trip were gathering with their guides/teachers. couldn't get past the crowd to see the portrait so I made a mental note to go back later as if that's possible in a dream
(notes to self on conclusions drawn from conversation w/ @mystacoceti about our ongoing mwq reading project)
general this time around with musil is making me feel much more ambivalent. he knows so much about what he knows, but either canāt or wonāt acknowledge the very large gaps in perspective that his class/gender/existence as a single individual etc. give him and despite all that he is still better at writing women (and fully fleshed out people in general) than ***** , is willing to take the risk of writing about people in a concrete setting that the reader might be able to judge/have alternative perspectives on, has successfully synthesized the issues of a life with sexuality/marriage and a life devoted to literature instead of buying into ascetism hook line and sinker, and thus is equipped to directly confront gender in a way that ***** simply can't
is writing stories with timeless, nonspecific settings and archetypical fairy-tale characters just political cowardice? a sign of *****'s inability to truly imagine a different world or the interiority of other humans, particularly women? this is not really a new take but I would like to go about it in a non-pathologizing manner because this flavor of blindness is more of a product of privilege than anything else. musil has tried and failed but his failures are so rich and magnificent that the gaps are more disappointing than infuriating. *****'s failures are so tightly self-contained within layers of abstraction and horror that you don't even notice them unless you step wayyyy back

The satirical research field "parachute use to prevent death and major trauma" is such a goldmine. The two major publications
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC300808/
and
https://www.bmj.com/content/363/bmj.k5094
are pretty much perfect satire of the way pseudo-skeptics dismiss domain experts and demand "hard evidence" in the form of exclusively flawless double-blind controlled studies, while clearly demonstrating that they have no idea what that entails, or what the limitations of RCTs are.
wild way to say "kill yourselves"
But the randomized control trial that was actually performed (second link) found no evidence that parachutes prevent mortality! (because they could only recruit people willing to jump off small, landed aircraft)
a short story so mid (tonka) it forces you to take a step back and reevaluate the techniques and big-pictures strengths/weaknesses of musil as a whole, because it really is that serious
