As an individual who has been struggling with bulimic tendencies and symptoms of body dysmorphia, being subjected to harsh negative comments about my appearance has direct consequences on my (already distorted) self-image. Another day, another occasion where I’m confronted with derogatory comments towards my appearance. Long story short, the delivery guy who I work with brought his friend to the restaurant and in the middle of the discussion he mentioned: “Honestly you’re too fat, you should lose some weight.”
It wasn’t meant as a joke. This person is not my friend. Yet, I feel so fucking hurt. The same instance occurred last year and I spiralled back down into bulimia. This man does not realize the extent to which his comment is going to affect my future behaviour and my self-esteem. I want to disappear, and I feel so foolish for being this vulnerable. I wrote to the delivery guy about how much his friend’s commentary was disrespectful, but I doubt it will modify anything.
