There's literally millions of books to choose from. Even if you refuse to read books by icky women there's more books and types of books than you could possibly ever want. Who gives a fuck. In primary school we HAD to read these idiotic books clearly targeting boys and their interests even.

The story of Demeter and Persephone is a story of the trauma and loss mothers and daughters experience in a society with a patrilocal marriage system. It shows the powerlessness of women in a system where marriages happen at the behest of the husband and the father. Even after starving the earth, she can only regain her daughter for part of the year because her daughter has been tricked into consuming "seeds."

Yet in most modern interpretations, the story is reframed as the story of Persephone and Hades, a love story. It's a story of kidnapping and trauma reframed as a romance. Demeter is interpreted as an overbearing and controlling mother, unwilling to let her daughter grow up.

To me, this recontextualization of the story is indicative of society's efforts to convince women through romantic media that marriage and romance to men is the goal, that it will make them happy. Look, we even took this story of a terrifying situation in which a powerless mother loses her daughter because her daughter's father has given his approval into a love story! Look, it's now #empowering and #feminist because we gave her agency!

But that disregards the actual meaning of the story to the people who would have told it to each other. To take something from its original context and flatten the female experience within patriarchal societies, particularly when it comes to marriage, is to rewrite history in men's favor.

#I had a coworker once who got fired and then his mental health started to seriously deteriorate #I can't diagnose him but he seemed to be having delusions and was posting a lot of weird things on Facebook #many years later I logged into Facebook for the first time also in years and saw #saw that he had started a group message between me and some guy I'd never met #saying that he'd been communicating with me in the dream world and I had agreed to become roommates with this man #and that because I'm a lesbian it would be fine (the coworker is a gay man idk about the man I'd never met)#and the message was like only a couple of weeks before I'd logged in #I really hope he's gotten some help and that people stopped feeding into his problems
