βWhat do they grow here?β
Lord Shaxx looks over at the small Awoken girl next to him, staring out over the common grounds of their makeshift base camp.
βThat lady keeps calling it a farm. What do they grow?β
βHope. Dreams. The seeds of a new City.β
Runa looks down and pats her stomach.
βI meant food. Iβm starving.β
βAh.β The girl has refused to remove her cobbled-together armor, and while there are other children at the Farm she has shown no interest in leaving his side.
βMe too, kid.β Shaxx looks over as Cayde-6 drapes his frame across the railing. βIβd smooch a thrall for some noodles.β
Shaxx doesnβt answer, but Runa canβt help looking over at him.
βDo youβ¦have a stomach?β
βSorry,β Cayde says. βThatβs classified info. Need-to-know only. You get me.β
Her frown makes it clear that she doesnβt, but she nods as though she does, her chin high, then turns her gaze back to the grounds. Cayde sighs, loud and exaggerated, and holds up a hand in front of him. As Runa watches, a knife appears in it. Then he flicks his wrist and it disappears again. A moment later, he is holding two.
Runaβs mouth gapes, and forgetting to be aloof, she stares a little harder.
Cayde pretends not to notice. Now heβs holding three knives. Now four.
βI hear you learned your way around a knife out there,β he says. βWouldnβt have thought that olβ One-Horn here had anything to teach.β
Shaxx continues to ignore the Exo, and watches Runa instead. Her hand twitches. If anything, her dreams have worsened since they left the City, and often he sees her sitting up at night, hugging her knees. Shaxx watches Caydeβs head shift imperceptibly; sees that he notices.
βHe taught me lots,β she says, frowning at Cayde. βBesides, you only have one horn.β
βFair point,β says Cayde, then inclines his head towards her belt, his voice dropping an octave lower. βBut those are a Hunterβs knives, and Lord Shaxx ainβt no Hunter.β
βDoesnβt matter,β Runa mutters. Her hand twitches again, and she looks over at Lord Shaxx. βWeβve just been waiting here. Forever. Canβt we do something?β
βWe are doing something,β says Shaxx. βThere is work to be done before the next conflict. Wars are not won on the battlefield alone.β
βYeah,β Cayde says, knives suddenly gone. βSometimes theyβre fought on weird horse-planets with depressed AIs.β
Both Shaxx and Runa look over at him.
βNever mindβ. Just had a bad experience, is all. Listen, kid. If you ever want to learn how to use those knives - and I mean instead of just whacking people with βem, the way Captain Grumpy-Pants here does - you let me know.β
She looks back at Shaxx. βReally?β
βYou do not need my permission to better your skills, little Shield-Sister,β he growls. βBut I would urge you to avoid developingβ¦bad habits.β
Run frowns, and turns back to Cayde. βBut I donβt have powers. Like you do. Iβm notβ¦Iβm not a Guardian. Not really.β
Cayde pauses, shoulders hunched on the railing. Lord Shaxx glances down at her, but stays very still.
βReckon that donβt make a difference,β Cayde says at last. βWay I see it, the Light - thatβs what we call it - all it is, is potential. A way to grab what you want and make it real. But you donβt need that.β
βNah. Knives have their own language, and fluency requires aβ¦certain knack. Way I hear it, youβve got the knack. Besides, anyone who stayed in that City and did what you didβs a Guardian any way you cut it - Light or no. Which, in case any of us have managed to forget, is something none of us have anymore either.β
She flashes a shy smile at him.
βTell you what, kid. See that lady in the poncho down there? Sheβll find you something to eat. After that, Iβll show you how to play the knife game.β
βThe knife game?β Runa asks.
βMost important skill a Hunterβll ever have,β Cayde says. βWin you loads of Glimmer. Just donβt play with Ikora.β
βShh, this is Hunter talk. Sound good, kid? Meet you back here in fifteen or so?β
Once more, Runa glances up at Shaxx. He nods slightly.
ββKay,β Runa says, mimicking Caydeβs cadence. βMeet you in fifteen.β With a grin, she disappears.
Lord Shaxx and Cayde-6 watch her run down the stairs and across the grass. The knife is back in Caydeβs hand, twirling through his fingers, but he doesnβt seem to notice it.
βWhereβs she stayinβ?β
βWith me, for the time being,β says Shaxx. βShe has paid no heed to the other children.β
βNot surprising. Doesnβt seem fair, losinβ out on your childhood like that. And nowβ¦You oughta make sure sheβs got somebody to talk to. Seen Hunters go twitchy before.β
At last, Shaxx rolls his neck and places his hands on the railing.
βI know enough to know that the girl should spend time with others, but I was not aware you had experience in raising children,β Shaxx says. He makes an effort to sound sincere.
The knife stops. βMe? Please. Iβve just always wanted to be the cool uncle. Jokes, presents, liquor under the tableβ¦β
βKidding, kidding. Well, Iβm gonna go bother Ikora for a while before the little brat comes back. Good talk, champ.β
He pushes himself away from the railing, and begins to walk away.
βWait,β Shaxx says. βIβ¦thank you. Iβm pleased that youβre willing to help.β
Cayde spins on his heel and offers a two-fingered salute.
