JUS2 is a unit of two members who were in charge of intensity in GOT7. This is a chemistry created when JB and Yugyeom, who love R&B in common, were absorbed in creative activities. Their hybridization was completed in a “minimal” state, which is neither strong nor soft. The mini album contains a story called six senses. Starting with the word Focus on Me, Drunk on You, Touch, Senses, Love Talk, and Long Black. It doesn’t mean much nowadays to classify music into genres, but there are emotions of Deep House, Slow Jam and R&B in JUS2’s music.

The unit’s name was bound to be JUS2. It’s only JB and Yugyeom, and it’s a stage that can only be presented. “Actually, JUS2 means that it’s both a performance and a song. We danced, sang, wrote and composed, and did everything.” JUS2 is an example of a completely new creation without losing the members’ identity in the group and reveal their talents and tastes.

Q. We are curious about the similarities and differences between you two.

JB: Our personalities are similar but our lifestyles are different. I really don’t believe in blood type personalities but we’re both type A and there is definitely a timid side to us. When you see us in reality we don’t seem that timid. To sum it up, we’re both timid and not timid at the same time (laugh). Both of us are considerate so we match well in some aspects. Yugyeom is all about ‘let’s live life having fun’.

Yugyeom: I don’t put too much meaning behind the word 'happiness’ and I’m a person who often feels happiness (doing little things).

JB: I like enjoying everyday life but I have a compulsion to not let my thoughts and mind slip alway so I tend to think a lot. There is music that we both like and there’s also a point where (our styles) meet. I like strong/fast paced music and I also like calm smooth music, I like all kinds of music. Yugyeom likes the strong turn up kind of music and tends to lean towards the strong music.

Q. If GOT7’s energy is bright and fresh, what would JUS2’s energy be?

Yugyeom: Jus2 would be having control and restraining yourself. If GOT7’s energy is 'attacking’ then JUS2’s energy is more like 'holding yourself back’.

JB: If GOT7 were the shooting star ice cream then JUS2 would be the Vanilla ice cream. Soft and smooth. Personally I like JJ Project’s album the most. The story and track order contained all of what I wanted to say/include so it’s the album I’m most proud of. After that is JUS2’s album which I’m highly satisfied with. Although there is no overall storyline, the theme of sensation was unraveled.

Q. You wrote and composed 'Focus On Me’, if you could tell us about the collaboration process.

Yugyeom: We listen to the track and figure out whether to decide the theme first or make the melody first. The theme of FOCUS came up while writing the melody for Focus On Me and that’s how it was settled. If anyone can think of a melody while listening to MR, they record it. “This part seems okay” then JB hyung sings it and I try singing it then we keep matching parts.

JB: At the start when I was working on the song and writing the chorus 'focus on me’ stuck to me as matching. Since everyone else liked it we decided on it as the theme and wrote the lyrics. The first and second verse were written separately then the lyrics were put together.

Q. In what moments does inspiration tend to come to you?

JB: When I sense if a song’s mood is a certain way, I think about what happened in the past or whať’s happening now or what I’ve seen in movies and books. If I get inspiration first then I write it down in my notebook or phone. There are times when I turn songs on and look over what I have written down from the past. And sometimes the lyrics match what you want.

Q. What kind of lyrics do you think are good lyrics?

Yugyeom: the way you listen and the way you write is different. I’m the type to play a melody when I’m trying to write lyrics then I see what matches well in terms of pronunciation. JB hyung pays more attention to the lyrics so lyrics I could never think of came up (from JB). I would be into something else and hyung would come up with lyrics like ”Today you’ll raise the white flag".

Q. What is a point you appreciate about each other’s dancing?

JB: Yugyeom’s dancing line is very clean cut. When he stretches out, the lines are really pretty and it also gives off a modern dance feel. He is the best at peculiar moves with his long legs. On the other hand my dance has more roughness.

Yugyeom: what’s funny is, I realised this after watching the music video, that I dance with all my fingers out (?) together whereas hyung is the opposite

JB: (his fingers out together?) Yugyeom really likes this.

Yugyeom: That’s what my favorite American dancer always did. It has become a habit.

Q. Yugyeom is always wearing black skinny pants in his Instagram dance videos, is it like a uniform?

JB: Not only when he dances, he just doesn’t wear other pants in general. Yugyeom has lots of the same pants (laugh). He likes black skinny pants so much that he wears them even during practice. And he has stage shoes, which are more comfortable than sneakers, so he always wears them during practice too.

JB: For me I need the pants width to be big a little. And I always need to have sneakers on. Yugyeom likes skinny style while I’m the type to like a flimsy style.

Q. Things you talked about the most while preparing for JUS2.

JB: It was 'How should we organise/format the album”. Since it’s our first time doing a minimal sound, we wondered if it would go well and we worried a lot about the album. We had lots of public relation meetings too (laugh). Looking back, it was fun. Feels like I’ve been travelling abroad for a few months. To be honest, I haven’t been able to travel abroad much but whenever I travel even for a short time I feel really excited, but rather than an amusement park kind of fun I would feel a calm kind of fun. To paraphrase that, it’s similar to the feeling.

Yugyeom: It was really fun. Seeing hyung almost everyday, we also talked a lot. I also liked the times where we would go grab a drink after finishing writing songs. Since JUS2 participated in songwriting and also outfits and choreography so it has lots of meaning. The teasers were also captured freely with a film camera while listening to music. Many new unique attempts were made in the preparation process.

Q. Feels like you have expanded a lot musically. Is there something you do to keep growing?

JB: When I see people I respect or people who are doing well think I should have more thoughts of ’Why is this all I can do’. That’s how it works. I think. “Let’s have a lot of experiences that will touch me, both indirectly and directly” When I have a chance, I go to exhibitions and think about the agony of the artists. I also wonder how I can use the SNS, which is so full of things, for my development. l once wondered how l could use so much SNS for my development. I take note of places and exhibitions recommended by people, I thought it would be good to get ideas from impressive artwork or videos.

Q. You’ve been a part of GOT7 for more than 6 years but this is your first time working together with just the two of you. Is there something new you learnt?

Yugyeom: There is no such thing. If I really try to find one, I thought hyung only ate Korean food but he actually likes eating even cream, curry and udon now.

JB: I feel like I’ve gotten influenced by the other members. I thought my preference for Korean food would never change but I’ve come to an acceptance point. Last time when we went to Paris, Bambam wanted to try snails. I rejected saying I could never eat snails but it was actually more delicious than I expected. That’s the case, I have even eaten snails.

Q. If you were to pick the happiest moment in your day?

JB: When I clean the cats’ dung. I see with my eyes that I can do something for someone else. I feel joy seeing the cats in a good shape/image. When I see the bin full of their dung, pride overcomes me as l know (they) have become cleaner.

Yugyeom: I’m the type who likes having lots of schedules but there are times when I become tired physically. I consult with my company and decide on a day off, and the moment I step foot into my house I feel really happy. A break once in a while could be so sweet. I’m happy when I can sleep late after working on songs all night.

Q: Is there anything you’ve discovered or thought about differently recently?

JB: On the way home after producing yesterday, the taxi driver took a wrong turn and we ended up at Yeouido. Looking out at the buildings through the window, this thought came to me. Within those buildings, people may be fighting or happy but the buildings seen from within the taxi only just look beautiful. I thought maybe the world looks more beautiful if you see it from a distance instead of up close. I thought we too might need some distance in our life as well.

Q: Is there anything you’ve discovered or thought about differently recently?

Yugyeom: I have always thought this but recently there’s something that I’ve felt more strongly.I must really love music a lot (laughs). I would go crazy if I don’t listen to it. If lI’m not listening to music, it feels like I have to and l’d keep thinking about the music I want to listen to. I’ve been producing songs lately and they’ve been very healing to me. Listening to and making good music in itself is a source of healing to me. So l realised once again. Ah, I must really love music.

Q. Do you feel the stress of writing while listening to music you like?

Yugyeom: not at all. I’ve never had such thoughts. There’s a song I’m into lately. I really like Travis Scott’s Can’t Say’ so l keep listening to it and watching the music video.

Q. JUS2 will have a world tour in April. GOT7 also proved themselves through a world tour too. What is the meaning behind world tours.

JB: It is like the result of one’s efforts. Something that tells me how hard I’ve tried. An album allows me to witness the response to my agony/thoughts and a world tour allows me to experience that response.

Q. JB you’ve been uploading mixtapes on music sites for a few years now. How did this experience influence JUS2 work?

JB: I think it made me want to try doing what I really like. In fact, when you make music and keep storing them and going back to edit them, that way you won’t have any results. Even if I get a beating (get punished) let’s just show them!’ that kind of mindset. The fans liked it but people around me reacted coolly. They said I put too much strength in it. I’m also considering different formats. Using the name Def. I wanted to differentiate between me who is in public and me who likes hip-hop R&B. Def. means the best with a full stop after it, ending it with the best. I wanted to convey the meaning that it’s only over after I do my absolute best. Moving forward, of course l’ll work hard doing the things I’m doing but I really want to show the image of me doing the things I like.

Q. What you want to achieve through JUS2.

JB: Music site ranking was not our goal. “Leť’s show a fun and cool different colour”, let’s show a completely different image from GOT7 were our goals. Actually even now I’m satisfied. As much as the album was well made, I like it/feel good.

I will probably continue with my singing career. Popularity is bound to fall one day but even so, I wouldn’t be lazy as a singer. Since I know there will come a time someday when my light would fade - JB

Before I came to meet GOT7, I listened to the new album <7for 7> a few times. How about just getting rid of all the boring and conventional questions and talk about music? Seems like you guys would have a lot to say.

BB: That’s good. Since we debuted we wanted to sing songs made by us individually. So everyone constantly made songs along the way but it’s true that it is insufficient. But this time aside from us being satisfied, our company was satisfied as well. Personally it was an album that l’m highly satisfied with. It feels like (my) dreams came true, I’m proud and it’s lovely.

JB: Although the songs that I made have made it into the album before, it’s the first time we are using my song as the title song and promoting with it. It’s very meaningful. Including myself, all of the members paid a lot of attention to it

JS: I think it’s an album that plainly includes the worries we have as people in our 20s. We wanted to express our thankful hearts with the title song You Are’ “it’s so nice because you are here’.

Seems like the one album completed by the 7 songs that the GOT7 7 members’ participated in has various meanings. Words like "independence”, ”self-reliance”, ”freedom’’ and ”responsibility’’ come to mind.

BB: I think at our age we always have thoughts about independence and self-reliance. (We) think of the time in the future when we can’t do this job anymore. (I) work hard not only on music, but also on making videos and on areas related to languages. Opportunities come to those who are prepared isn’t it (laughs).

JB: While preparing for this album, the pressure and responsibility was huge. It was to the extent that it’s hard to express with words. When the song I made was decided as the title song the feeling reached its maximum and because of the pressure, I paid more attention and worked harder to prepare for it.

YJ: Though it is an album that reflected a lot of our opinions and thoughts, the big picture and tuning that completed it were done together with the company. Rather than feeling burdened, because we were able to do something we wanted to, it was a happy experience. I’ve got a lot of affection for this album.

JY: I’m not sure that if I say I didn’t feel burdened, if it would sound like I have no sense of responsibility. But rather than feeling burdened, I felt more anticipation and excitement. It felt great because having a GOT7 member made song as a title song meant that we got recognition from the company and the public.

Is it an album that had no regrets and reflected everything you guys wanted to do?

JB: As a member of GOT7, what I wanted to do and what I could do, I did everything. Of course as a whole individual I was lacking and I felt regretful. But that’s something that can’t be helped.

If I listen to a song made by JB now, I think I’ll know. There’s a unique refreshing feel to it.

JB: That is true for songs made by “GOT7 JB’. But I personally prefer something darker than that and sticky. Of course both sides are in me.

Remember You’ that BamBam participated in is just like BamBam. It has a strong sophisticated feel to it.

BB: My image is originally bright and lively but this song is slow and serious. The fans also thought that it was a twist. The song is about an anxious love.

Do you still like Saint Laurent recently?

BB: Hedi Slimane left (laughs). But I still like it. As presents, I received a lot of clothes from Saint Laurent on my birthday and Christmas. In my closet, I have the most Saint Laurent clothing. I like those slim styles. But l’m not sure if I have gotten lazy recently (laughs). I started liking clothes that are just comfortable. Things like baggy pants and slippers.

After learning about the melody and lyrics from the song "Firework” that Jinyoung-ie participated in, I thought that you maybe are a dreamer.

JY: The lyries compare fireworks blowing up and the path that we are walking on. It’s a song with a positive meaning that If we silently work hard, someday we’ll shine’. I think of myself as a dreamer but I don’t know how those around me think.

I saw you taking out a book in the fitting room just now, what book are you reading recently?

JY: I read a book called <Doll of eternal youth> I’m done reading it and I’m looking for a new book to read. (“Note this is a direct translation, the book does not have an English name.)

Your habit of reading books must influence you in some way when you are writing your lyrics.

JY: I don’t think ľ’m influenced by any direct material or expressions. Though there are probably instances whereby the books that I read get reflected in the music as I’m working on it.

The song To Me that Yugyeom participated in is heard precisely like a song of someone who dances. A variety of beats and rhythm stacking up and splitting

YG: I wanted to try something new as much as possible. I used beats and a melody that aren’t really used by mainstream music in Korea. It’s so foreign so I thought it wouldn’t be included in the album but the reaction was unexpectedly good.

Jackson, Mark and BamBam wrote Korean lyrics. They might be proficient at the Korean language, but speaking it and writing it are different things.

JS: That’s right, It’s not easy. For me, I don’t really read books (laughs). I find and look at a lot of the lyrics from other singers.

M: There’s something I would like to express but because l’m still poor at Korean so I can’t express everything like my heart daes. Though it’s a pity, I’m satisfied. I think that it’s right to not be greedy and just express what I can right now. I can just work harder on the next album.

BB: Speech and writing is definitely different. If you write lyrics just like you are speaking, at some point it could become childish so i’m careful about that part. I listened to opinions of others nonstop while I worked (on the songs).

What about the other members? A person who writes has principles that they stick with like OCD.

JB: I try not to use repeated expressions. While working on many songs, there are times where the content of the lyrics or expressions become similar. I don’t like using this expression in this song and then in another song again. All this time I liked simple and relaxed expressions but now I’m ambitious about metaphorical or poetic expressions

YJ: It’s really hard to write lyrics. With the same lyrics, depending on the person or depending on the melody, it can be heard totally differently. Controlling that strength is always homework to me but first I’d have a go at it. Whether it’s cringeworthy or not, I note down everything I think of and look at it.

Personally I like Youngjae’s straight and clean vocals. "Moon U’ goes really well with that voice.

YJ: Fan meeting "We under the moonlight, I’ve done it before with that as a subject. It’s a song that I want to sing to the fans. I thought that all the members are like that too, but I [ended up) making my song such that I can sing it on my own from the start to the end. And because of that, naturally I made a song that matches my standard and my voice.

What do you think of your own voice?

YJ: I have never thought that my voice is pretty. So stifling (laughs). Not satisfied. Because I’m not happy with it, here are many tümes that I get annoyed.

Today I got a shock after seeing Jackson. I expected to see the image that that appeared on variety programs but you are very much serious and manly.

JS: It’s interesting to appear on variety programs and I like it. But l’m not glad that only the bright and lively appearance revealed in variety remains with the public. Of course that is also the real me but I also do have lots of serious sides. Music or acting, now I wish to show that side of me.

How was an interview like today? Is it not fun because it’s too serious?

GOT7: No, we liked it. Because it’s not like a magazine interview so it’s impressive.

JB: Of course an interview that just talks comfortably is great too but when talking about music, doing it seriously is good. For me, even though I know that l’m an idol, there were many times that I deny it on my own. It’s some sort of rebellion. I think I disliked the fixed image about idols. Now I want to have both the image of a musician and an idol.

Not now but after some time passes, how would the 7 of you from GOT7 remember this album «7 for 7>?

BB: While preparing for this album, it felt like we were debuting again. To that extent it was an album that was meaningful and even as time passes I think it’s an album that I will treasure preciously. Originally, the first attempt will be remembered for a long time.

JB: It’ll be great if after time passes, the fans listen to this album and still think that the songs are good. Personally if I listen to it after a few years, I will see the inadequate parts. Aside from the question of whether (l’m} satisfied or not, I think that I would feel that it’s a pity and like I should have done more.

M: GOT7 past songs are cool on the stage but they were not songs that could be listened to comfortably normally. But this album can be listened to in everyday life with earphones. It’s good for listening while on a drive too. Personally l’m never tired of it and will probably listen to it occasionally. It’s an album that I’m satisfied with.

YJ: That’s right. It’s the first time l’m listening to our song so many times. I’m not tired of it. I hope that it’s like that for others too. A sang that’s easy to listen to and (you) won’t be tired of.

YG: I think I will remember it as an album with various meanings. Because for the first time with our participation, an album was made. All 7 songs aren’t uncomfortable to listen to and even I keep going to them.

BB: It has not been long since we’ve made our comeback so we’re very busy. It’s hectic and tiring. So it still doesn’t feel real yet, (my) condition was very good when we were working on the songs that were included in this album. Met many friends too and there were many enjoyable things. I think I’ll remember those emotions back then.

JS: I think of it as GOT7 7 members’ "first album. I think many memories will remain. As we grow older, I think l'l feel proud ift listen to You Are again.

JY: Second start. Another growth for GOT7.

Out of the 7 songs in <7 for 7>, there was a song 1 heard repeatedly last night. Apart from (your) shares (in the songs). don’t trouble over it and quickly voice out the song that you personally treasure.

YG: ”Teenager”

YJ: "You Are”

M: Not one but two songs. "You Are”. ”Firework”

JS: “Firework”. But if you listen to it repeatedly, no matter what song is it, wouldn’t you get annoyed? (laughs)

JY: "Remember you”.

JB: "Moon U” and "To Me.” What’s the song you listened to repeatedly? (laughs)

From JYP Entertainment that has not debuted a new male idol group in long time, GOT7, the 7-membered group debuted grandly in January last year. Be it from their debut song ‘Girls Girls Girls’ and even the song ‘Just Right’ that was released in the summer, they are always simple and cutely confessing, showing a boy(ish) side. This is probably why, compared to their older songs, GOT7 that returned with the song ‘If You Do’ that feels more masculine, seem different somehow. It hasn’t even been 2 years since they stood on their debut stage but during this period, the boys have turned into men. And here, the things that then 7 men have not been able to show, the things they want to do, are still aplenty.

W: You are currently diligently promoting ‘If You Do’. Compared to the somewhat cute and lively ‘Just Right’, this song feels definitely more masculine. What were your thoughts the first time you heard the song?

Jr.: I was on the fence. Of course it was good but it is so different from the songs we’ve been doing so I was worried that the fans would hate it. But after shooting and looking at the MV, I (realised) worried uselessly.

Youngjae: I think this fits GOT7’s style more. The songs that we’ve released so far are pretty much similar generally; I’ve wanted to try something strong and different so I’m excited that we’re able to promote with this song.

Jackson: This song is really strong. Isn’t it just a ‘man(ly) song’? When I first heard it, I thought “Ah, this is our style!”

W: To GOT7, ‘If You Do’ is a song style that fits you more?

JB: Compared to ‘Just Right’, this song feels more comfortable. Since we are guys, it feels more natural to be acting manly than to be acting cute.

BamBam: During my trainee period, I practiced a lot with songs that are similar in style to ‘If You Do’. Therefore, when we first released ‘Girls Girls Girls’ and songs that are lively and cute, there were difficulties. Because we pretty much did not practice for that kind of songs. But now, since we’re able to show to the fans something we’ve practiced a lot for, it’s even better.

Yugyeom: Of course it seems like the fans would like any (type of) songs we do. We’re really thankful for that.

W: Previously, on a portal site, there was a GOT7 fan that said, “If you watch this and you don’t end up like GOT7, you should just leave Earth” and uploaded a “fandom entrance” video. Clicking on the link, it was the choreography video for ‘Just Right’. Do you remember recording for that?

JB: After schedules, we returned to the practice room and recorded it to the best of our abilities and the response were good. For us, when we get excited, we’re usually the type to get really excited. Therefore, we recorded that really excitedly. I don’t really know why the fans especially like this video (laughs).

Youngjae: I guess the fans like it more because it included sides of us that were more natural/laid back?

Jr.: For music videos, it’s been edited several times and it’s a put-together version but for that video, I think we were all a little more honest (relatable). We weren’t wearing our stage outfits, we didn’t have heavy makeup on so we looked more natural/laid back.

W: Have you thoughts of why your fans like you out of the 7 members in GOT7? What do you think your fans like best about you?

Jackson: Probably because I’m honest. How about this? We go around and talk about each other’s most attractive point. Firstly, I think they like Yugyeomie because he’s innocent. (Yugyeom: It’s been a while since that innocent disappeared.) For BamBam, his style is great and he has exceptional fashion sense. His proportions are great so whatever he puts on looks cool. For Mark hyung, his mysteriousness is his advantage. The silence is great.

BamBam: Mark is just handsome (laughs). Also, like Jackson hyung said, when he doesn’t speak he’s able to maintain the mysterious image which is a huge advantage. The other members and I talk a lot so the fans know a lot about us but on the other hand, since Mark doesn’t speak much there are still a lot of things the fans don’t know about him. Therefore, they are more curious about him. But for me, they’re no longer curious about me (laughs).

W: We don’t know if you still remember this but in the early days of your debut, on a rolling paper, you all wrote each other’s characteristic and (that) is still around on the net. It’s memorable how everyone did not leave out “Good leader” when talking about JB.

Jr.: JB hyung is someone who has enough existence (presence?) to lead GOT7 as a leader. Also, another reason why we wrote that was - if we wrote it like that, hyung would be able to see it right? We also included it so that when he sees it, he will be more responsible for the future. Therefore if I were to say it again, it’s this: Half of it is me really thinking he’s a good leader and the other half is engraving (telling) “you are a good leader” (to JB).

W: Then we would like to ask JB. Isn’t it hard being a leader?

Jr.: I want to answer this instead. I’ve looked into JB hyung’s heart (laughs). The answer is, “It’s really hard”. This is because, how much do guys in their late teens and early twenties listen (to instructions)? Just gathering everyone together itself is a difficult task. You really can’t say it’s easy.

JB: But for me, I don’t exactly feel it’s hard. Ah of course, in the beginning it was hard. Usually, wherever I go, I would be the maknae (youngest) so I wasn’t used to taking care of the younger ones. But now, between us members, our opinions matches and we have no problem communicating with one another. I don’t need to worry about any one person too.

W: During other male idols interview, when we asked what their personal goals were, pretty much everyone said “end of the year awards”, “to hold a large concert”. However, there was someone who said, “I really want to earn a lot of money”. Therefore, we’d like to ask GOT7 members. If you managed to earn way more than you do now, what would you want to do?

JB: To be honest, I don’t have the greed to earn much money like that. If I had to have a goal, then it’ll be to provide a home for my parents. Since young, we’ve been very close to my aunt so I’d like to provide a home for my aunt’s family too. Also, it’ll be great if I have my own place, and I’d like to have a working studio in my house. (Jr.: Then you’d need to earn a lot. A whole lot.) It’s not a simple dream. Working hard after starting this work/job, I want to achieve at least that.

Jackson: I want to let my parents travel around the world. I really want to do that before they get older.

Yugyeom: I want to ensure that my parents are able to live comfortably without worrying about money.

Mark: Honestly, there’s a watch I’d like to buy. I think it’s something I can only buy after a lot of time has passed. Firstly, I’d like to earn a lot of money to buy a really huge house in the States.

BamBam: I’ve actually achieved one of my goals. Would I look pretentious saying it out? (laughs) I’ve bought a 2-storey house in Thailand. I chose everything from the wallpaper, floor tiles to the furniture so it’s a home that I feel a stronger attachment to.

Youngjae: If I have a lot of money now, I’ll start with changing the car(s) GOT7 travel in. To a really good car. This is on the assumption I have really a lot of money.

W: In 10 years time, you will mostly be turning 30. Have you thought about what you’d be like in 10 years time?

JB: I don’t know. If like mentioned earlier, I’m able to provide for my own accommodation, I’ll probably be working on music at home. But I don’t think I’d live a life like a popular star or celebrity. I just want to live quietly making good music. Of course this could be different depending on situation.

Jr.: I’ve not thought about life in 10 years but I’ve thought about life in 20 years. Ah, now thinking about it, in 10 years, I’ll probably be doing my military service. (JB: Ah, then I should make a correction too. We’ll probably all be doing our military service in 10 years.)

Mark: Around that period, wouldn’t we have married and have a new family?

BamBam: I want to open a restaurant. Right now in Thailand, my family has a restaurant but I want to open my own restaurant. Like how I decorated the house personally, if I could decorate the interior with my own hands, I don’t have anything else I wish for.

W: After the release of your new album, it seems like you’re busily spending your days. Earlier, you reached the studio close to 7PM but for some of the members, you were eating your first meal for the day. In this state, what are the ways you relieve stress.

Youngjae: I like playing games. I play really various games but lately I’ve been mostly playing FIFA Online or Winning. When I’m playing Winning, I play a lot with JB hyung or the manager hyung but sometimes I play with Jackson hyung too.

JB: I think I just sleep? I’m the type to release my stress by sleeping. Sometimes I play games on my mobile phone too. The game I’ve been into lately is ‘Mu Origin’.

Jr.: I like watching movies. I especially like watching them alone. I absolutely can’t watch movies with someone else. It’s important to focus only on the movie. I don’t even buy popcorn. Lately, there have been a lot of schedules that I’ve not been able to go to the theatres so I’ve bought movies off on my phone and watch it there. Yesterday, after a long while, I re-watched ‘Toy Story’ that I used to watch when I was younger.

Jackson: I don’t usually get stressed out. I’m the type to always try to think positively.

W: It’ll be almost dawn by the time filming is done. What will you do when you head back to the dorm?

JB: It’s probably different based on our conditions but in this condition now, I think I’ll be going to sleep.

Jr. I’ll shower first. Since I need to remove the makeup (laughs). And then I’ll finish up the movie I was watching yesterday. (W: Toy Story?) Ah I finished that, now I’m watching ‘The Thieves’.

BamBam: Yesterday too I pretty much stayed up all night, so I should quickly head to bed.

Mark: I’ll first play with the dog for a while.

Thailand’s summer heat wouldn’t be able to compete with hotness from the duo brothers, “JB & Yugyeom of GOT7. In the newfound unit, JUS2, they released a new single- "FoCus On Me- that makes the fans scream with interest to add this new single to their collection. In this issue, Praew took a flight to South Korea to collect photos of these 2 hotties for you before we took the chance to have a chat with them. Chatting with them in South Korea is really something. JB took the seat at the head of the table, followed by Yugyeom who greeted Praew staff around the table in Thai style with Wai and the word "Sawaddee Krub”

First of all, we would like to ask you how the leader of GOT7 and the youngest brother of the group form this new unit (a special Korean song project created by specific members), JUS2, together.

“In concerts, the two of us often sing together. So, we often talk about which kind of unit we would form next. In parties after concerts, the higher-ups would often talk about this idea as well and they thought having the two of us work together on a new song would be fun. So, the idea was developed from that point and became this duo unit today.“ JB replied.

"We also share similar favorite song genres, and we want to represent our characters with the music style which is totally different from GOT7. So, we took part in the production of every song in this project. We created some of the songs together, and created the others separately. For the promo song, we got help from a song writer named Cosmic Boy. We hope that everyone would love our songs.” Yugyeom explained.

Can the fans expect something special from this unit?

“The first special thing that the fans can expect from us is stage performance. The second thing is the music which is going to be something that the fans have never seen from GOT7. We try to focus more on expressing emotions through the music in this unit, and we tried our best to present our characters through the MVs and the music style.” JB answered.

You mentioned that you share similar favorite song genres. Which genre are they?

“I like R&B and Hip-Hop. So, I tend to go with these music styles when I write a new song. I mostly go for R&B, and mix Trap beats into the song sometimes. Do you know Trap music? It’s a type of Hip-Hop which we can mix it with R&B. If you ask me who is my favorite singer, I’d say Chris Brown (R&B singer) and Travis Scott, a Hip-Hop singer" (smile). Yugyeom answered first.

“For me, I don’t particularly fond of any genre. If it’s a good song, then I like it. Same goes for when I sing. If I like the song and it’s the song that can express my feelings with good music, then I can sing it regardless of its genre. If I have to pick my favorite singer, I’d say D'Angelo is my idol. It doesn’t mean that I want to make my songs like his though (smile). I also like to listen to Toro y Moi and Kaytranada’s songs lately.“ JB shared his thoughts.

What are the secrets or tips you use to write a song that can impress everyone?

"There’s no secret in my work process. It just needs a lot of thought. I mostly find inspiration from my own experience or the stories I can find around me such as movies, songs, or books. I also have my past like everyone, my love experience or others, which I can take to present in my song. It’s the same as making a movie (Scenario).” JB replied immediately

“I also get new inspiration from my surroundings as well, from my point of view on different things in my daily life. For example, when I saw a couple on the other side of the road, I would imagine what they’re talking about, how happy they are. Or when I saw people living their life, I would ask myself what is their happiness, where do they find it, maybe their happiness is family or children at home.“

“For me, Hmm…I don’t think I do anything special. I just want to have fun with it. I may put my life experience and my imagination into the lyrics, but I mostly just create a good result if I enjoy the process and are happy with it.” Yugyeom shared his thoughts.

It seems your processes are quite different.

“Actually, we share the same trait which is that we both like to work freely and have fun with it. The difference might be our standpoint. Yugyeom wouldn’t think too much and tend to be easy-going, but I would focus on the point. If we have to make a decision, I make a clear decision while Yugyeom is struggled to choose” (smile). JB denied our mention.

Yugyeom gave JB a dirty look. “I’m not like that anymore! Like JB said, and as we mentioned about the way we work, you’d see that our thoughts are quite different (smile). However, this difference is what makes JB a good consultant since he can point out something I couldn’t think of which is a great help to me.

"Another difference would be our preference for food. We aren’t picky, but JB would prefer Korean or seafood dishes. He also likes Thai food as well. ("Tom Yum Kung is my favorite, and I also love Gaeng Keow Wan Gai” JB mentioned.) However, I would prefer western dishes and red meat. For Thai food, ld say Khao Pad is the best.“

Since you’ve been working together for a long time, have you had any conflict?

“Never. We do have our different thoughts, but if it’s my responsibility, Yugyeom would respect my decision. And if it’s his responsibility, I would respect his decision as well. In terms of group decision, we mostly agree with each other. I think he has grown up. Looking at how he conducts himself nowadays, I can say that he has become more responsible. I can’t tell you the detail since it’s his private life though” (smile). JB said with confidence.

So, has the big brother JB done anything that makes him look like a kid?

Yugyeom looked at JB before bursting a laugh. “Sure! Everyone would say that he’s like a very naughty kid when he pulls a prank.”

Since you are in this industry for 7-8 years already, do you remember the goal you had on the first day you entered this industry? And how far is your progress toward it now?

“My dream is still the same, which is to be a dance singer. To this day, I still have a long way to go, for both dancing, singing, and stage performance. I think I could keep getting better if I keep practicing.” Yugyeom answered clearly.

“I’ve never had a goal. I used to be a b-boy dancer and I want to have a full experience with b-boy and Hip-Hop culture, but I have never set a goal to become a famous singer. If I get famous, that’s good for me. I just want to dance the way I like and write songs freely. I didn’t do it to get famous. All I want is just to give my all to make good songs.“ JB said.

“I still think that I need to produce more quality songs. Further than that, I want to keep working on it every day. Not to repeat the same thing over and over, but to explore something new to improve myself and widen my world with the new lessons and discoveries I could find along the way.”

Looks like you two have come so far. What makes you become who you are today?

“I think it’s diligence. As time passes by, I grow more diligent because I often think of the past which makes me feel that I could do things better but I didn’t. That makes me try my best to keep getting better at my work so that I have no regret. It’s to the point that everyone sees me as a very diligent and determined person.” JB replied immediately. Yugyeom agreed to JB. “Like what he said, we just try our best and keep it up every day.”

Have you ever been depressed or struggled because of your work? And how do you deal with it?

“Generally, it’s my physical condition like when I’m tired or lack of sleep. Sometimes, I sit alone on a sofa and ask myself, what am I doing or why do I have to do it, which I believe that everyone has moments like this no matter what kind of job they do. However, I’m quite optimistic and easy to forget. When I start asking those questions, I’d just ask them and stop thinking further (laugh). Yugyeom shares his experience.

"My problem is that I think too much. I would overthink things over and over until it sinks into my heart which makes me feel very bad to the point that I can’t sleep sometimes So, I normally try to sleep it off. If I feel very down, I will go out and meet my friends so that I can forget about it. When I have something on my mind,I will not tell the others. I usually try to figure it out myself. I may tell my parents about the problem on my mind, but that’s only when they ask. If they don’t ask, I don’t talk” JB told us seriously. “But if we talk about physical tiredness like when I’m tired from work, I will think of when we released the song Never Ever. It was very cold back then. The time we finished our work and got into a warm place was the best. This memory could help me Cure my tiredness.”

Yugyeom took this chance to conclude. “I think we just need to be positive because no matter what’s the problem, we can go through it”

What about the good time? Is there any good memory you get from work?

“I love to perform on the stage. Doing concerts is the best time in my working life.” Yugyeom answered first.

“I do like to do concerts like him and I like the time we release a new album as well, but I would be happier when I get good feedback from my work. When GOT7 returned from the Eyes On You World Tour and received a lot of praise from the company or when I wrote You Are and got a praise message directly from the company’s president at night, I was very happy. It makes me feel like every effort I put into my work pays off the good result.” JB shared his memories

May you give some advice to the people who dream to be a popular and successful singer like you please?

“First of all, you must understand yourselves the most you can. Ask yourselves if this is really the job you want. You need to think carefully because you might regret and lose your way if this job turns out different from what you expect, but if you’re sure about it, then you must give it your all to make a success of your dream. Do your best every day, and don’t cower before any obstacle.” JB, as the group leader, gave his advice

You have visited Thailand so many times and you will pay a visit again in the near future. Is there anything in Thailand that impresses you?

“I really love Thai food, especially seafood with a lot of shrimps. For traveling, I like Phuket the most. I saw a lot of advertising about Phuket, then I travelled there and found that it’s a really great place. (Yugyeom nodded and agreed with JB. “Exactly, Phuket is the best. ”) Oh! There’s another place I want to visit. It’s Phi Phi Islands which I heard that we need to take a boat from Phuket to go there.“ JB answered with a smile.

"If we talk about Thailand, I would think of Thai fans. Every time we visit Thailand, Ahgases would treat us very well. The event that impressed me the most would be during the Eyes On You World Tour in Bangkok. The fans on the 3rd floor arranged pink glow signs to form the word GOT7 Saranghae (We love GOT7)” Yugyeom answered excitedly.

“That’s right. I remember that Bambam would report the number of audiences to us before the concert excitedly. He said, You know that this is Thailand, right? All the 12,000 seats are packed full, you know? (laugh) Our Thai fans treat us very warmly. If it’s American or westerner fans, they would enjoy the concert with us, but Thai fans would give us their all.” JB confirmed Yugyeom’s opinion.

Is there anything you want to say to Thai fans? JB pleaded with the fans first. “We are JUS2, the special unit from GOT7. We hope that you would like and enjoy our new release, Focus On Me. We put our feelings into this song. And I want to thank everyone for supporting us all this time. Thailand would be really hot right now. So, please take care of your health” (smile)

“Everyone would have been waiting for us for so long. I do want to meet everyone soon as well. Please support us in unit JUS2. We made the song and created new moves for this unit ourselves and we hope that you would love it.” Yugyeom pleaded the fans with cuter tone. “Rak na…“ (love you.)

From GOT7’s leader to main vocal and even lead dancer… in other words, he is a multiplayer, and an all-rounder. We were in the midst of preparing the interview, and the editor who was researching JB could already come to know that all that was true even before meeting him. JB, who we meet on stage and on his own personal Soundcloud channel, really does well in everything. We were getting more and more curious about him before having met him. On the day of the cover shooting, we proceeded with the photoshoot first then had the interview after. Watching JB who was in the middle of his shoot, I could see that there are even more things that he is good at. While we talked about the concept and mood for the day, he faintly smiled and answered that he understood. And when he entered the shoot, we heard his answer even more clearly. He wiped the smile that he just had off his face and immediately showed through his actions that he understood what we talked about. In life, opportunities and good fortune are like a random game play but after seeing him we realised that it all came to find him. JB seemed as if he already knew that yet he was never impatient. I hope JB’s intelligent and sexy energy is relayed to Nylonias too.

“I’m doing music now, but be it vocals or dance, I’m not drawn to a particular side. They’re both similarly balanced, but the way I think about them is a little different. Singing is something I definitely want to do well, as for dancing, I want to have fun doing it. It’s good to be a good dancer. It would be really nice to be good at dancing, but since my aim for dancing is to enjoy it, rather than thinking ‘How can I dance better?’ ‘How can I dance more coolly?’, it’s more important that I enjoy myself and receive good energy while dancing.”

Due to COVID-19, everyone’s daily lives have changed. How has JB’s life changed?

My time at home has expectedly increased. I play with the cats and sometimes go out for a walk. When I go out, I either go to my studio or even when meeting with friends, we try to choose places that are not crowded. It’s a period of time when we should all be careful so I think that we should do whatever we can.

Were you originally someone who spent a lot of time at home. There is a term “homebody” that reflects those tendencies.

There was a time when I stayed home and didn’t do anything for a few months, but I really felt stressed then. I realised then that being home alone too much isn’t good for you. But of course going out everyday is also tiring physically (laughs). That balance is important and when you’re at home, rather than lying down, collapsing and watching TV, it’s better to watch a film that you can relate to or read a book. I do those kinds of things at home.

When you were younger, you said all you did was dance. It could be a cliche question but what is dance to you? Isn’t the one thing that has been with JB or a long time.

The answer could be obvious but to me dance is something that feels like life and livelihood. Since young, rather than practising choreography that has already been set, it became a habit that I could dance freestyle to music that is being played. I don’t know, to me choreography is choreography and dance is dance, to me there is this distinction.

What standards do you think stand at the forefront of dance?

To me, I also consider nodding your head to music that is playing as dance. I think that’s my reply because I feel that  dance is an expression of your current feelings. In the past, something like that happened. When I was walking the streets and suddenly heard a song that I know despite it not being me who played it. Then I would suddenly start dancing. It happened when I was young, but now that I’m thinking about it, it’s a bit embarrassing (laughs)

It seemed like you were enjoying the rhythms of the songs that were being played on set today too.

Music that is my taste played so I was having fun while listening.

To many people, music is a hobby. But for JB that has turned into a career, has there not been times when it has been stressful?

While making music, the times when I can’t seem to create anything are the times (when it is most stressful) or when I had a certain thought or intention while making the song but it is interpreted differently. At those times I think, “Ah that’s not really it?”. Rather than stress, it’s a bit closer to regret.  When songs are not coming to mind, I often think, “Why can’t I think of anything?”, “Do I really not have any talent?” too. But you’re making something out of nothing so it can’t be helped that you collapse at times during the process. I also look back at myself. The stress I had at that time couldn’t be helped. I should put up with it.  

What do you think about while working on your music these days?

Being unlike myself? That’s the part I pay attention to the most. If a song turns out to be unlike me but not over-exaggeratedly, I think ‘oh that’s pretty good’ and can accept it. I try to avoid songs that are too like myself since it can be predictable.

I thought you would be the opposite and make music like yourself instead.

Because it feels like I’m locked up, so I don’t like that.

Do you think you have shown enough of songs that are like yourself?

That is not the case either. As JB, I’m the type to make songs like myself when making music for GOT7. Rather than myself, it has to be more like GOT7’s colour, so I think about that a lot. It’s not that I don’t like music that is like myself.

You seem to be the type that makes plans to clear things out and get them done.

I also have a spontaneous side. But I generally am the type to make plans. If I set my mind and think, “Let’s do this” then in the end I will end up getting it done.

Many people like JB as a singer. You may not have started with singing from the beginning, but you are now the main vocalist of GOT7 and worthy (of the position). What comes to mind when you look back at yourself as a vocalist.

I like my tone but I also don’t like it. Actually, I do think my tone matches well with bright moods or intense music but personally I think it has lacking points. I think it‘s too strong and bright, so I work hard to balance that out.

Is there another artist’s tone that you think is good these days?

I often listen to Crush’s music, and I envy his soft tone.

When I see JB’s collaborations with various artists, it‘s interesting how a new tone comes out each time.

That’s because I tailor it to whatever is needed each time. Sometimes it’s fascinating to me too, that I express things differently depending on who I work with and how I came to meet them. I think vocal tone can be seen as an instrument that makes the music.

Fair skin and cold eyes, sharp nose and jawline, large build, twin moles. As they say, the image of a simple country boy and a cold city man seem to coexist. What is something people around you tell you is really cool about you?

People around me would never say that. Honestly, friends don’t really talk about what’s cool about each other right? We just curse and get cursed. (Laughs) Well, I know what I think (is cool) about myself.

We’re curious about that too.

Sexiness. Actually it’s more so the thought that I should certainly move forward possessing sexiness.

Is this something you’ve decided that represents you?

If we have to say that, then let’s go with cute sexy.

Aren’t you being too ambitious?

It’s just my own thoughts. (Laughs) In the past, I would have replied with ‘being free’. I thought that being myself without hesitation was a strength. But these days, it’s more of a point that I have to fix rather than a strength. In reality I’m a very free-spirited person, but I don’t think that is the right personality for celebrities or public figures.

Did something happen that might have made you feel that way?

I like being honest. But even I think I have a personality that can be misunderstood easily. Like peers my age, I sometimes talk without a filter when I’m excited. But I’ve been thinking, “Don’t we need to manage our image?” Not a lot though. (Laugh)

You seem to be free-spirited, but with rules and such, you seem to be disciplined and have firm standards.

I always upkeep my own line/standard.  I’m not always on the clouds. It’s the same for myself and also my friends around me, even for the members, if they cross the line, I am the type to calmly tell them “don’t you think maybe you shouldn’t say/do that?”.

You seem to be the type to say “that’s not it” right away when something is wrong.

Well, I think if I wait to say something, they might feel worse about it. So I’m the type to just say it right there and then that we should be more careful.

I’ve seen an interview in the part where the GOT7 members did not hesitate to say “JB is our leader. There is no other candidate.” But to be honest, being a leader, you can’t not have many burdens and responsibilities.

(Laugh) In the past that was the case so I used to get a lot of stress, but nowadays it’s not the case. Now everyone takes care of themselves and they’re all reliable. At some point, I started thinking that continuously saying “Let’s do this” and “Let’s do that” is starting to sound nagging. I don’t want that so unless it’s something that needs to be stopped, I don’t say much. Once I was really out of it so I asked Jinyoung to take care of team matters, he did really well so I’ve been leaning on Jinyoung a lot since then.

It feels like a president and vice president.

Nowadays I’m the vice president. (Laugh). I reinforce what Jinyoung says, I don’t interrupt and pretend to act like the head of the group.

Since GOT7 is a team of multi-national members, it would not have been easy to agree on things because of language and cultural differences.

The members are all very good at Korean, so there have never been any times when problems arose due to language issues. When we talk about our opinions, we ask, ‘Okay so how do you want to go about this?’ And then we go with the majority. This method is the most simple and fair.

Outside of your role as JB in GOT7, is Jaebeom the type to lead in friendships?

Not at all. In a friendship group, there’s always that one person who’s so quiet you don’t know if he’s there or not, right? That’s me. (Laughs) If you call for me, I’ll go out and have fun. But I’m not the type to go “ya~~~” to lead and start up the mood. (My character) is a character that disappears quietly after having fun together.

The latest mini album received a great response. It ranked No. 1 on iTunes music charts in more than 50 countries around the world. Domestic music charts and record sales were also overwhelming..

Out of ambition, I did hope it would be better. It is important for my name and the team’s name to be more known, however I hoped our music would reach more people.  

Looking at GOT7 onstage, everyone thinks you are a group that stands out with your performance.

We can be proud of that. It’s the thing we pay most attention to since we’re in GOT7. Now we also have some years of experience, so I think our skills should live up to that too. I thought that it’s a time when the team shouldn’t simply be releasing albums. I think we have to work hard so people go “ah great” when watching our performances.

Previously when we were doing the shoot, there was a cut that was a little revealing. Do you work out? There was a time when you were chosen as GOT7’s rep for having a “good body”.

These days I’m intending to start exercising again. And I usually don’t take things such as nutritional supplements, but I’ve come to think they’re important so recently, I stopped by a pharmacy to buy a variety of vitamins and probiotics etc and I eat them every morning.

Was there something that prompted that or did it just come to mind?

I’ve had a lot of interest in fashion, but I don’t really pay a lot of attention to my looks. I’ve come to realise recently that how you look is also part of fashion so I ‪want to take better care of myself. (Laughs) My body is the type to get big easily when I exercise so instead I tried to just lose weight by not eating. But I felt that my condition was starting to get out of control too so I told myself, “Ok, let’s combine (what we’ve done previously) with exercise as well and create a healthy body!”

How long have you been taking nutritional supplements for?

It’s barely been a week. (Laughs) I’m not sure if it’s because of my mood, but I already feel like I’m getting healthier. I woke up at 9 this morning. But I didn’t feel tired or anything, I felt so refreshed so I’m starting to believe more and more in the magic of nutritional supplements.

When we were talking about charms; you mentioned the term sexiness. What does JB think sexiness is?

How do I say this. Rather than forcibly thinking ‘I’m fatal’, true sexiness comes out in a natural situation or moment. Also when someone is working hard on what they do. I am also working hard on my job, and I especially pay attention to the atmosphere created by lyrics or songs. I think that sexiness comes to be when you naturally get caught in that kind of place.

Then what do you think being cool is?

When someone acknowledges their own weakness (problem) and knows how to take that in. Even if they can’t fix it straightaway, they think about it once more, and are able to say 'I’m sorry’ or even discuss the issue more. That’s what I think 'being cool’ is.

Honestly when someone hears words that aren’t very kind, even though in your head you know what you should do, sometimes it’s hard to control facial expressions.

On the contrary, when hearing such things, if it was me I’d say ‘I fully understand what you mean. But to be honest, it doesn’t feel good.”  After acknowledging what I did wrong, I am the type to honestly express how I feel at that moment. Then I ask for some time if I need it or find the cause (of why I feel this way).

You seem to be someone that hates ambiguity.

But there are times when I act ambiguous too. Despite hating things like that. (Laughs) Sometimes I think ‘Am I this hypocritical?’ And have a hard time because of it, but again I guess everyone is like that in a way.
