So now that we have (most of) the Fionna and Cake Season 2 episode titles, I thought I might as well do a bit of theorizing on what they could mean and be hinting at for the episodes.
āThe Crocodile Who Bit a Logā: With the benefit of having had the last couple days to mull over this one, to me this title feels like it represents a combination of ābiting off more than you can chewā and āmistaking your goal and going after the wrong thingā. Ergo; the crocodile mistakes the log for some big piece of food and bites it, discovering that itās both too big and not even food to begin with. And I think we can already pretty easily guess how this could potentially apply to both Fionna and Huntress Wizard next episode:
Fionna gets in way over her head in her attempts to help her friends get their place back from Queenie, and is also entirely misguided as to how to even go about it. It could also run deeper for Fionna in regards to setting up her arc this season: Fionna is overwhelming herself with her growing hero-complex and fixation on doing everything she can to help her friends, while having the completely wrong idea as to what SHE actually wants for herself. Thereās also the possibility of Fionnaās crush on Hunter blowing up in her face, as per the hints we got in the opening.
Meanwhile for Huntress Wizard, I actually think this title plays perfectly into whatās been hinted at through a combination of the end of episode 1, the released stills for episode 2, and the preview clips: I think whatās going to happen is that after being confronted with her fellow druids/family in the Heart of the Forest, Huntress Wizard becomes convinced that she needs to get a piece of the big ominous bush in order to help Finn. An attempt which goes very, very BAD, likely quite literally blowing up in HWās face and blasting her into the astral plane (hence the shots we have of her spirit form) where she has an unexpected chat with Spirit Dream Warrior (that we also saw in the preview) that also sets up her journey, goals and arc for the season.
And that conversation with Spirit Dream Warrior feels like it could be especially interesting, because by law of narrative convention I think itās pretty easy to guess that itās going to be all about how Huntress Wizard is after the wrong thing and needs to figure out what she REALLY wants. Something which I am deciding to stop speculating on here until we actually get the episode, but from my previous F&C posts you can probably guess my theories involve Fionntress XD
āThe Lion of Embersā: I think this one might actually be at first a little misleading; specifically because I donāt think the former Vampire King is going to be involved in this episode at all, or the rest of the this season for that matter.
Instead, the first thing that comes to mind for me about this title is that it could be in reference to Fionnaās disastrous love-life. āEmbersā of course referring to Fionnaās ex, DJ Flame while the āLionā is actually in reference to Cake, specifically her growing relationship with Monochromicorn. I think, again based on cross-referencing what we see in the OP and trailer, that Cakeās budding fling with Mono is actually going very well, which in turn makes Fionna very insecure about her own love-life and leads her to make some very ill-advised decisions regarding a certain ex of hers. ESPECIALLY if things have already gone badly between her and Hunter. After all, we see Fionna, Cake and Mono attending one of DJ Flameās shows in the preview, as well as see/hear what seems to be DJ Flame actually flirting with a surprisingly receptive Fionna. Given everything we saw in the first episode, I feel like the only thing that could lead Fionna to this is if things have already massively deteriorated with Hunter. And of course, I think itās pretty safe to say anything she tries with confirmed-jackass DJ Flame goes even worse.
āThe Cat Who Tipped the Boxā: At this point, weāre basically in pure abstract guess-work territory until we actually get closer in the episodes released to provide better context. For me, the first thing that comes to mind for this title is that it could be a roundabout reference to Schrodingerās Cat? Ie; the Cat, presumably Cake, is in the box of quantum uncertainty, but then tips that box over. Perhaps Cake throws a proverbial wrench into a few plans, for good or bad.
āThe Butterfly and the Riverā: So this one is particularly interesting because for me, the first thing that actually comes to mind is Finnās first meeting with Huntress Wizard back in the episode Flute Spell. As in, Finn has always been associated with a Butterfly, and he first met Huntress Wizard while bathing in a river. But rather than being specifically about main-timeline Finn and Huntress Wizard, this could be more in general reference to āFinnsā and āHuntress Wizardsā across the multiverse.
āThe Bird in the Clockā: Not much to say about this one, other than the āBirdā could be in reference to Cosmic Owl, who we know is making a return this season, as well as potentially the clock people from that one clip in the trailer showing Fionna, Huntress Wizard and Farmworld Finn.
āThe Wolves Who Wanderedā: Iāve already seen a bit of discussion on this one that it could be in reference to Huntress Wizard as well as Hunter, but I think itās also worth noting that Finn, and by extension his many counterparts, have also been associated with wolves in the past. So the wolves here could in fact that Huntress Wizard and Fionna. As for the āWanderedā bit, well assuming Fionnaās arc this season is all about balancing her desire to help her friends and taking care of what she wants for herself, then I think itās easy to imagine a point where Fionna swings to the opposite direction of where we see her in episode one and essentially goes āFuck it, Iām just going to live for myselfā and toys with the idea of being some wild wanderer with Huntress Wizard.
