mlp g2 castle (image repost from ebay)
it's nice to see closer images of the castle, even if it's sunfaded. so, i wanted to put the images up on the blog. although the castle mold comes from my kissing dragon; the stair piece, deco and accessories are new and different. I think as a G2 item, it is so drastically different from the rest of G2's aesthetics and sculpting methods, and it shows a huge sign of cost cutting measures on the end of hasbro. as a pony castle? I think it works okay. the side rooms feel a bit lackluster, as the fit just about one pony. i don't think that will impede play very much, because G2 furniture is around the same size or smaller than a pony. the larger G2 pieces just wouldn't fit on the floors anyways. I think the other mlp castles would do better for g2, at least size wise. it folds up completely if you take the stairs off i believe, even with the new folding out cardstock inside the castle
the new cardboard/cardstock piece on the inside of the castle helps it feel more G2, along with all the new stickers and new accessories. The castle itself has a different, more generic feel to it, so these newer additions help cover this style change. G2 up until this point leaned into the horse-er aspects of mlp, even the nursery set released in 2000 with the castle still retained the stable aesthetics. g2 leaned into detail sculpting, similar to art nouveau as pointed out by other fans, a contrast to the bigger sculpted bricks, hearts and flowers. there's plenty to be said about the different pieces of the sculpt, but as a transition from a different 90s toyline to one that made it past Y2K, it really isn't all that bad. I could nitpick, but G2 recycled two other playsets anyways from g1, it's really not worth it to me to fully deconstruct what fits and what doesn't fit into g2. because the castle itself is so obscure, it fits into g2 by mystique. the lot did not include all of the accessories, the only accessories i do not recognize are the saddle, the cardstock rug, and the red fruit thing on the table. the rest either come with the castle or come with other g2 ponies. again, the new accessories are at the same level of sculpting i expect out of g2, i think if you wanna see the rest you'd have to scrounge the internet more. lavender lagoon is a good place to start for g2 if you have even the slightest interest. the stairs have really cute flower railings, the candelabra is melting way too much, which remind me of what i love about g2's style. along with the oddly over detailed rugs and windows, all the newer paper goods reek of 80s and 90s CGI, like the rest of g2's art (in a good way of course)
Lot includes G3 Pretty Parasol and G2 Baby Jewel, but the pony that comes with the castle is princess sweetberry. i don't have a particular fondness for her but she's nice! I like most of sweetberry's releases
