There have definitely been very successful (W)Asian actors and actresses, but I do want to add that there is a systemic issue in Hollywood that makes it a lot more difficult for Asian creatives to not only book roles, but also to get inside writing rooms, get their projects funded and more. That’s why Gold House exists.

One of the best recent examples of this is Charles Melton; he had one of the best acting performances of the year for May December, people were sure he’d get an Oscar nomination and he didn’t, and had difficulty booking roles after. Another recent one is Yerin Ha, who just had her big Bridgerton moment, and has spoken publicly that she considered focusing on the South Korean film industry because it’s so difficult to get booked in Hollywood.

We absolutely do not want to reduce Hudson to his race, but what he’s doing is extra special because there is a systemic issue in Hollywood and he’s thriving in spite of it. But that does mean he has to work harder than his age mates with the same hype and that’s sadly just a fact.

Does this only affect Asians? Of course not. This year’s Emmy’s nominations have been the least diverse in eleven years. These are things we need to keep in mind when we talk about the boys and their careers. The sad truth is just that H has to work harder on staying visible and not fade away, while C has the option to disappear from social media.

All that said; they’re both doing so great and we really need to celebrate them more instead of nitpicking and analyzing everything they’re doing. Their teams have secured them great deals and opportunities and will continue to do so.
