i'm a 99' french oldie (apparently) who's a bit lost in life and just started uni again!
i studied english for a while and kind of burnt out because a master's degree just wasn't for me. i ended up deciding to get back to a chinese major. i already studied chinese in high school, but wasn't able to continue in college.
i'm also interested in learning more swedish and korean in the future, although right now, i'm focusing on chinese and maintaining my english level.
my utmost goal would be to hopefully participate in an abroad program in china for my third year 🤞

Part 4 of the commonly used structure with some examples:
数不上 - shǔ bu shàng - can't be counted among; doesn't qualify
在这些专家当中，他还数不上 - Among these experts, he doesn’t qualify (count as an expert).
在世界强队中，我们还数不上 - Among the world’s top teams, we don’t qualify [as the top team]
犯不上 - fàn bu shàng - not worth it; unnecessary
他受不了批评，其实也犯不上-He can’t take criticism, but honestly, it’s not worth being upset about.
为这点小事生气，犯不上-It’s not worth getting angry over such a small thing.
挨不上 - āi bu shàng - not connected to; not related
这件事跟我挨不上- This matter has nothing to do with me/it's not related to me.
这两个观点完全挨不上 - These two viewpoints aren’t connected at all.
赶不上 - gǎn bu shàng - can't catch up; fall behind. It has the meaning of physically unable to catch up, time issues making it diffiuclt or impossible to do, or can be used in some comparison contexts (in this case it's used like 比不上)
他跑得太快，我赶不上他 - He runs too fast, I can’t catch up with him.
快点，不然赶不上公交车了 - Hurry up, or we’ll miss the bus.
他的水平赶不上你 - His level isn’t as good as yours. (比不上)
配不上 - pèi bu shàng - not worthy of; not a match for
这种价格配不上这个质量 - That price doesn’t match this quality.
他条件太好了，我配不上他 - He’s too accomplished, I’m not on his level.
担不是 - dān bu shì - to take the blame
别担不是，这也不全是你的错 - Don’t take all the blame, it’s not entirely your fault.
数不着 - shǔ bu zháo - 1. Idiom meaning: unable to calculate something because the amount is too large 2.not important in comparison (doesn't meet the compairison standard), not worth mentioning
天上的星星多得数不着 - There are so many stars in the sky they can’t be counted
无不达 - wú bu dá - nothing can't be reached/understood, accessible. This one isn't really used that commonly in modern speech, but it's still worth mentioning.
刘勰《文心雕龙·知音》: 故心之照理，譬目之照形，目了则形无不分，心敏则理无不达。

来不及 - lái bu jí - too late; not enough time
我忙得连吃饭都来不及 - I’m so busy I don’t even have time to eat.
猛不丁 - měng bu dīng - suddenly; out of nowhere (colloquial)
天气好好的，猛不丁下起雨来 - The weather was fine, and then suddenly it started raining.
金不换 - jīn bu huàn - priceless, valuable, worth more than gold
真正的友情是金不换 - True friendship is worth more than gold.
闹不清 - nào bu qīng - can't make sense of, confused about
我真闹不清你的意思 - I really can’t figure out what you mean.
这件事太复杂了，我到现在还闹不清 - This matter is too complicated, I still can’t make sense of it.
拎不清 - līn bu qīng - muddle-headed, socially confused, can't read the room
这种场合还开这种玩笑，真拎不清 - Making that kind of joke in this situation is not acceptable [socially]
他们都生气了，他还开玩笑，太拎不清了- They’re already angry and he’s still joking, so clueless.

In this post I’ll discuss the 在。。。也 structure in Mandarin which means even if.
You can employ this structure when you want to express “even if X were more A (add adjective/adverb/verb phrase) the result will still be the same. Note that this structure carries the implication that you are already at level A.
Example: 这次考试太难，我在努力也没成功。
So, the example says ‘this time the test was so hard that even if I’d worked hard, I still won’t be successful.’ The implication is I did some work, may be even close to hard work.
Contrast 在。。。也 with 即使。。。也. Both of them mean ‘even if’ or ‘still.’ The difference is (I think-correct me I’m wrong) 即使。。。也 is used for hypotheticals. So in the first example, if I replaced 在。。。也 with 即使。。。也, it would mean that I didn’t actually work hard for the test.

Focus on self care. You’ve neglected yourself for too long. It’s good to care for others, but remember that you are also someone who needs love and attention. Be gentle with yourself.
Journal more! Let out your feelings, document your life. At the end of the year you can look back and remember the ups and downs, knowing you got through them all.
Pursue your passions! You put them to the side sometimes and that isn’t very good. Make more art, sing more, make things! You have to work at your passions to get better at them.
Get out in nature. Experience the world without technology around. Go on a hike, rock climb, swim in a river. The world is wide and she is so beautiful. See her before it’s too late.
Save your money - don’t be so frivolous. You never know when you’ll need some extra cash, so store some away for a rainy day.
Stay studying hard! Get up your gpa so you can transfer to a great university! It’ll be worth it in the end, trust me.
Make more of an effort with friends. You can’t expect them to initiate everything. Sometimes you have to try hard and sometimes they will, but it can’t be one sided. Don’t shut people out.
Finally, give love and let yourself be loved. Put out so much love into this world and it will return to you, tenfold.
starting to learn to write Mandarin by hand: "all those characters are so different!"
knows a few characters: "that's wonderful! once I know how to write a component in a character, it's easier to write other characters with the same component! So much easier than I thought!"
learning many more characters: "wait a minute, is that the right component or am I writing a similar character that isn't the actual character I want to write because I mixed up the components again?"
Possibly stupid question for Chinese speakers (or other tonal languages):
How does singing work with tones? Is there a way to use tones while singing, or are the possible melodies limited by the tones in the lyrics, or are tones discarded entirely and just inferred from context?
In general... no. You don't know the tone when singing, you just know from the context. There are actually many words that I go to say aloud in conversation, only for my brain to short-circuit because I've only used the word when singing, and I realize I have 0 idea what the tone is.
There are some instances where tone is interwoven into the melody of the line, which I always find really clever. The first example off my head is a 告五人 (Accusefive) song: 簡答題 (click for youtube) The line at 0:55 in particular!
早起午餐說晚安
zǎoqǐ wǔcān shuō wǎn'ān
Of course this line would be pretty easy to understand even without the melody being tone-adjacent, but I still think it's cool!

can't find it anymore, but I've seen those "time will pass anyway" collection posts going around and it's something i struggle with sooo much. like, i know i'm older than most of the students here and i've still got around 4 years of studies if i want to get to where i want to be. and if i kept my old boring job that i hated i would've spend those years thinking of what i could've done. but then i see people my age finishing their master's and it kills me to think i'm so far behind. i know it's stupid and everyone has their own pace but it's still stuck in my brain
