Anniversary

You have been together for five years The number foreign on your tongue A taste you can’t understand A rare thing though not delicacy

One foot has pruned It has been in the water so long Just in case of storm In case of getaway

One foot so firm in the sand It is bone dry & blistered One sore for every time You said “get out”

You have thrown pieces of you Into the foliage just beyond reach Into the possibility of forever Into the frightening unknown variable

You have loved the way the water raged Licked up to your thighs Wet you with escape Pulled you until you leaned towards

Always the ocean was too much Too rough too careless Too full of others & wildly selfish The ebb & flow toying with your care

The sand warm enough To nurse wounds to nourish life To build up what water broke down To feed after the sea consumed your all

So you drag yourself into the jungle Because it never shifts Never moves Won’t change its mind after convincing you Won’t ever leave despite what you’ve thrown

And so, you have been together for 5 years no longer look out & yearn for salt on skin May have crashed on this island The sea may have pushed you here But You have finally found home on safe dry land

I guess I don't want that anymore The kind of love that tears through you Puts your heart on your tongue Puts lifelines in your palms So every time you touched them You gave them a transfusion All of your best cells All of your best soul Jumped ship to enrich them Left you barren Bloodless But so fulfilled By the hope of them That self assured never would they ever The kind that has you say things like "You are the only person I would ever marry" & has them answer "I know" How many organs do I have to let you carve out How many ice baths to numb what you've taken How many haphazardly sutured wounds Will it take To make me forget The way our lives entwined So that my joy was your smile & your anger my fist I was the organ donor But how many others matched your blood type & opened themselves So you could breathe

If the stars could explain to the moon the glory of the sun’s rays You’d be that poetic cliché If I should continue… The asphalt & sidewalk to the skyscrapers might have much to say of views unseen & the option of brighter days Neither can change their ways however unwilling & unwavering determined not to yet needing to stay Having an irrefutable given role to play Flora & fauna Dazzling dizzy orbs of glory the symmetry of chaos in which we get lost forgetting every day is scientific poetry of existence Breathe in the miracle of chemical reactions of critical factions & molecular subtractions All of life explained as one essence relating to another Sky calling soil brother Moon to sun; lover All to earth; mother But after all this knowledge amongst all the knowing trying to explain your smile to the cosmos your being to the galaxy… These remain enigmas to me
