DRAFT KINGS

They wanted big cinematic visuals that resembled a fox hunt somewhere deep in the woods in England. So we went to the Big Oaks Ranch in Florida. A few tubes of death (provided by the talented Chris Dugan), and a talented equestrian-savy group of actors and wranglers gave us the look we were after. The trick was finding a path without exposed roots, so that the horses can gallop full steam. We used a service road and covered it in leaves.

Another complicated shot is to do dialog while in full gallop. Can’t mount a camera to a horse, or you’ll get earthquake camera. We can’t stick an arm car camera right in his face, as horses are unpredictable- and we have to keep our actors safe. The budget-flush productions would bring an animatronic horse that is towed by a vehicle- like a process trailer for a horse. We were not that production. So we improvised with strapping our actor and cinematographer into the back of a pickup and had someone waive a black wig in frame. Voila! Instant horse.

When big-time Hollywood talent agent, Zander Gonif, got a chance to do a Masterclass, he didn’t hold back.

This is a passion project with longtime collaborator Ben Koldyke. We’ve teamed up on many successful short films in the past under the VanRoble collective. He is a brilliant writer and actor.

Out of pure necessity, I cast my son to play a young Zander. He loved playing the role and his dad couldn’t be more proud.
