honestly i think one of jds greatest strengths as a writer lies in his ability to humanize people who have been denied dignity by society (addicts, outcasts, the poor, the mentally ill, etc.) as well as to show us how deep that solitude cuts and what that does to a person. a lot of mountain goats narrators are desperately lonely people or people who have fallen on hard times and been ostracized from greater society or people who have trouble making some fundamental connection with other people for whatever reason. and even in songs about more than one person that loneliness is still very present .
