I highly recommend Mikhail Bulgakov's novella "Heart of a Dog." 😔🙏🖤

It's a mix of "Jekyll and Hyde" and "Dr. Moreau's Island," but set in Soviet Russia after the Revolution.

(When reading Bulgakov's science fiction novels, it's evident that he was a BIG fan of H. G. Wells.)

Despite not seeing this version of the story (or perhaps because), my theory of the number of cigarettes compared to the simplicity of the cypher is simply that this is the DEAD LAST VERSION of the cypher he tried. He grossly overestimated his opponent and was trying all the complicated stuff first.
