In honor of Worlds this year, thought I'd bring back one of my fav Will character notes: he is a hockey nerd. not just in the way that he plays hockey of course he knows certain stats but he is like your eccentric uncle with a themed mancave that remembers who caught the second touchdown of the 1990 AFC championship.
From Warso's post-worlds interview last year:
(sorry for Warso jumpscare but he's oddly really complimentary of Will in this)
"The kid is a special person. He is an extremely gifted hockey player, but he's an unbelievable kid, wants to get better, wants to learn, wants to, you know, he's a hockey nut. Like he knows the history of the game. Like he'll talk to Doug Houda in San Jose on the bus about like the Bruins game in 2014 like game 2 in the Eastern Conference Finals and he's bringing up like plays that Andrew Ference made. Like he is a huge hockey nerd"
Whit: "(Laughs) he was nine"
"Yeah and he just loves to learn about the game and he's coachable."

Not only does he remember random games, he remembers random players' tape jobs.
In Max Miller's interview with Gabe:
Max Miller: "He's told me last two years about your guys random tape jobs during BC practices. What's maybe the one random one you could think of or whatever? I remember there was a day last year, Smith did a tape job, and he said "Oh this is Mikko Koivu" but he did it off the cuff. What's the ones that you remember most?"
Gabe: "Oh there's honestly so many we would do. We would mix up a bunch of colors, puck marks, different stuff. Just kind of always having fun with it and you know we did that for a couple of years. So I mean, there's so many. He knows a lot of random ones of a lot of random players."
Max also noted that Will likes to talk about his gear:
"Talking shop (gear) with Smith is one of my favorite things to do when I am not interviewing the Sharks winger. For me, it is a good way to break the ice (no pun intended). Like me, Smith is a gearhead. After morning skate on Jan. 23 before leaving the Sharks locker room, Smith turned to me and said, “What do you think of the skates?”"
He has a growing stick collection from players (Matthews, Ovechkin, Gaudreau, Bergeron, DeBrincat) and knows the details of the sticks players use:
“I like the funky sticks. Draisaitl’s is pretty cool,” Smith said. “It’s a long, flat blade, so obviously great for a passer, and clearly can score a lot with it too.”
Not just when he was in the league, but since he was a kid!:
[Brodie asked him why he stops to sign for fans after the game]
"My dad says make sure you stop, cause I was the kid who was asking for the stick [Brodie: Really?] Yeah I was the one who was bothering the players for sticks so I know what it's like"
Will is a gearhead through and through!!! He is hockey downnnnn dont forget it!
This clip where when asked about his favorite memento from last season (after Toff went to get the puck for Dickie's first goal) Will doesn't say his own first goal puck but rather Crosby or Ovi's stick:
Will: "Obviously your first goal is gonna be something you cherish forever but think it's a little bit different. Growing up as a kid, watched them my whole life so it's kinda cool... and I'm a stick person
Sheng: "I know...house on fire, do you grab the Ovechkin stick or the puck?"
Will: "That's tough, I'll have my Dad grab the puck and I'll take the stick"
And now we see how expansive his stick collection really is:
From what I can tell: Lane Hutson, Logan Couture, Kevin Hayes, Brady Skjei, Jack Hughes, Alexander Wennberg, Mack, Anze Kopitar, Jamie Benn, Patrick Kane, Evgeni Malkin, Joe Thornton, Hannah Bilka, Peter Lenes (Swaggy P), Connor Hellebyuck
This is still missing several more we know he has (Matthews, Ovi, Gaudreau, Crosby) and the ones above are left-handed so it's possible there's a whole other collection of right handed players he's hoarding.
