Jim Hensen studios was contracted to make the fire lizards. There's multiple different puppets for them, some which fly and some that perch. Some guy crouches behind Menolly to puppet the hissy queen fire lizard on her shoulder.

The dragons are also puppets, and they green screen the humans onto them. They're placed against painted backgrounds. The dragons breathe fire that's streamers in fan wind. The thread is stop motion animation of this creepy, spidery, silver strands.

The halls are made of fake stone with airbrushed moss. There's miniatures of each location that are used to mimic arial shots. There's boat scenes shot on film sets with more obviously painted backgrounds.

The music all has a very folksy feel. It's done on harps and reed pipes and guitars– but the "gitars" all look very whimsical and unique. Menolly's actress sings in a very raw, naturalist way. No auto tune or pre-recorded audio. It's all sung live. Except possibly her actual singing performances, when in scene she's singing with all her focus.

I've shared the cover before, but I've finally managed to scan in the illustrations from the Crossroad Adventure, Dragonharper by Jody Lynn Nye!

The interior illustrations were done by Todd Cameron Hamilton, who also went on to illustrate the Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern two years after this. His dragons change pretty dramatically from '87 to '89 – there's only one more dragon illustration below, right at the end, so get to scrolling if you don't care about Robinton's adventures! Otherwise, beware spoilers for Dragonharper and potential clues for problems in the 'adventure' portions.

Ah! hello, hi and howdy folks! As always, it is a delight and a pleasure to bring you the freshest, finest and most up-to-date information of Canyon River Weyr! The update I have for you today is something many of us have been waiting for!

The following information has been provided to all new, prospective, and senior members alike! We welcome everyone to join us in this grand little celebration of our return! We have some truly amazing things up our sleeves for all of you, and your engagement and trust in us are a reward whose value I cannot overstate! With that being said - here's the news!

The timelines for both CRW and Kepler have been adjusted and added to; please update your characters accordingly if you need to.

Clutching history for both factions have been updated. Note, adoptables mentioned are planned for release after The Event.

The Field Guide now has Weyrs Info and the CRW Lore section now includes bards.

July 20th, The Event begins. Players interested in participating have now until the 20th to contact Verglas (ON DISCORD) and insert/create characters for The Event. Prompts and a timeline for The Event will be posted soon.

Once The Event concludes, we will be Opening the site to all and advertising, officially. At Long Last!

wher concept

Weyr-bred whers are incredibly intelligent and useful companions, able to do the job of most other domesticated animals in a pinch (and so were once seen as incredibly valuable). Weyr-bred whers run in packs to trap and tire out prey and are infamous for their very powerful bites (and necrotizing saliva).

One of the things that has stuck with me about Dragonriders of Pern besides the dragons, riders sex culture (it’s weirder than you think), or whatever those destructive space strings were, or timetravel, or that this is not solidly fantasy but fantastical sci-fi, is the background.

Because part of the premise we eventually learn is the following-

1. This is a future human colony in a different star system.

2. The people who settled the planet wanted to live in a lower tech society. They chose this planet specifically due to lack of easily accessed metals and other resources that would lead to post medieval technological development.

3. Again: the settlers were primitivists (or whatever) who wanted to doom their descendants to the Middle Ages (or whatever it was) forever.

4. They also got stuck on the planet which basically rains destruction incarnate down on them every like, 50-100 year or something?
