I love pern
because of the bottom of head/neck nostrils my pern dragons do sneeze directly downwards and it is a popular prank/insult to make your dragon sneeze on someone. they also sniff things by putting their head directly over them
their humming noises also come from there. generally happy dragon noises happen with a closed mouth and unhappy ones happen with the mouth open because they allow for showing of teeth
Been on an ancient Egypt kick lately after listening to way too many lectures and it got me thinking about Pern again (if I had a nickel for every time I thought about Ancient Egypt and Pern together- see my post on papyrus as the perfect plant for pernese needs)
We have all been making fun of the society of Pern barely changing for 2500 years, but from what I could gather, especially in terms of art and culture, ancient Egyptian society also remained more or less the same for some 3000 years - apparently because unlike in our current society, change and progress wasn't seen as desirable but rather as an agent of chaos threatening the concept of divine balance of Ma'at. Life in ancient Egypt was very cyclical, centered around the regular flooding of the Nile, and disruptions to the cycle was a cause of great concern since insufficient or extreme flooding would be a cause of famines. Life on Pern is also very cyclical, though with much longer cycles of Passes and Intervals, and though deadly, burnt and drowned Thread is the strongest fertilizer. There is already a precedent laid by the colonists to resist progress to avoid war, and other people have already talked plenty about Harpers limiting the spread of information and approving/forbidding new inventions, and I'm just thinking about the potential of connecting it to the Red Star/Thread in some way. Idk.
Being critical of your interests is sooooo fun when you have the critic gene & then you sound kind of insane to the average tv watcher when you're like "this is my favorite show, It's Racist" & then you try to clarify what you mean & get that [Speech (legendary) - FAILURE] "the racism is really interesting though"
[Speech (legendary) - SUCCESS] I find the sociopolitical context of pulpy old sci-fi born circa the civil rights movement really fascinating to analyze especially when it was progressive for its time but still reveals the writers' unexamined biases in the subtext
Them: So you're saying its bad and I shouldn't watch it?
Me: I mean depends on your tolerance for this type of racism, but like I said it's my favourite show, it def has some great parts if you're up for it.
Them: Oh so it's not racist.
Me: It absolutely is.
Them: So you're saying racism is ok??
Me: No.

Decided that pernese dragons talk to each other like ATC and aircraft
Been thinking about the way @saltissalty designed his Pern dragons and decided to try my hand at something like one of those greens. Can't say I nailed it, but she is sassy and this was really fun to try and figure out.
After watching a frankly ridiculous amount of GOT adjacent stuff over the weekend, something hit me: people on Pern do not embrace the aesthetic enough.
More Pern things in universe need to be dragon themed. Outfits? Tool some dragons into those rider leathers, please. Helmets? Put headknobs on them. Custom match your outfits to your dragon. Why do the weyrs not carve giant dragons on everything?
Or even general weyr things – you're telling me Telgar riders aren't rocking up to the gather in whole wheat motifs? That Benden weyr isn't really, really into red?
Lord Holders should be doing this too. I don't care how eye searing a French flag themed Telgar Hold outfit would be, that Lord better be rocking up looking like a Bastille Day parade.
And yes, I get that they all wear shoulder knots and crafters wear their craft colours, but it's not enough.
they absolutely ABSOLUTELY should -- though i want to think this is a victim of book aesthetics vs screen aesthetics. if you have a door in a book, it's a door. if it's a door in a show, you have to decide what it's made of, what the handle looks like, what shape it is, how dirty it is, which way it opens, and yeah, whether it has a badge on the lintel
that being said i've always had a huge bone to pick with the descriptions of clothing in pern being SUPER LAZY
Definitely a part of it – the GOT musings on my end come from hearing about how they toned down the aesthetics for the show because Martin's descriptions were even more batshit.
Tamora Pierce is one of the only other authors I can think of, though, who doesn't describe a ton but whose aesthetics have never questioned. Probably helps that the world is grounded a little bit more by notes and details on day to day life, since McCaffrey is allergic to recording proper tiny details. It also helps that Pierce assumes her audience will never have seen a specific item before – McCaffrey went 'everyone knows what military shoulder knots look like, let me just never mention this properly' and then those things changed between military branch and country.
was looking at a general history of clothes in like europe and stuff and like......
what kind of underwear do they wear on Pern?
I can't remember any specific things mentioning undershirts or anything but those at least were probably mentioned....
Edit:

https://peoplepern.narod.ru/books/dlg/viii.htm there is actually a lot of clothing lore to be found!!! Each hold (and wyer) even have slightly different traditions, though some are given way more description than other.
If you can get a copy/find the images online (one of these days I will get a second copy and a scanner and rip the whole thing apart properly), it's also worth looking into the People of Pern book by Robin Wood.
Robin Wood illustrated the board game, which McCaffrey loved so much they got together to illustrate nearly the whole major cast pre 1988 (so Dragonflight–Nerilka's Story).
It doesn't show people off in their underwear, but it does show variety of clothing that might help narrow down the variety of underpinnings.
*wakes up in a cold sweat*
the red star/thread is periods and the. the dragons are space tampons

i have this headcanon that over time, they try to mimic human facial expression, especially their rider!
WAIT WHAT SERVERS!!! I’m dying to get mutuals that love the books! Pleaseeee
It's a lot of RP ones I'm afraid, but the two I'd recommend as discussion places (tho love of the books varies wildly):
Pern Connect - mostly works as a RP server resource, but we do a lot of chatting about setting and art and stuff.
Pern: Fifth Pass - is Mist's brainchild and the place to go if you really want to chat world building and dig into weird topics about the books.
(People please link your own fandom groups onto this cus I do not know them all.)
PLEASEEEEE I NEED MUTUALS THAT HAVE READ DRAGONRIDERS OF PERN PLEASEEEE
Pleaseeee join me!!!( It’s just a community called “Dragonriders of Pern” if you just want to look it up)
