I wanna eat this cookie so bad

“Oh— hi, yeah I guess— my family and I just moved to Santa Carla recently, so I’m still getting my bearings. Don’t know my way around too well yet. Are you a local?”

Michael’s face brightens. “Oh! You want to— with me—“ he stumbles over his words for a moment before catching himself and regaining his composure.

“Yeah, I’d be down! Haven’t been over there yet, it’d be cool to go there with someone who knows what’s what.”

Kyson grins at Michael’s bashful expression, laughing softly.

“Yeah, of course. Just don’t be alarmed if people suddenly start trying to offer you things, that’s normal around here.” He’d say, starting to lead the way.

“I came here with my mom and my brother,” Michael explains as they go. “My little brother, Sam, he turned 13 a few months back. He’s really into comics, which— I was too, at his age, so I can’t say much. Though his sense of style is… certainly something,” he says with a small laugh. “He’s a good kid, though. He got… bullied a lot back in Arizona. Hopefully here he can get away from all that.”

“My mom… she’s the one who got us out of there, and I know that wasn’t easy to do. She’s doing her best, despite everything, though sometimes I think she forgets that I’m not a child anymore, you know?” He looks at the ground. “I guess I can’t blame her for worrying about me, though.”

“Sorry your brother had to deal with that. I know it’s like. I wasn’t exactly… the most popular kid back home either.” He chuckled awkwardly with a shrug. “Things got better when I got into highschool, but… still hurt, ya know?”

He released a soft breath of air, wiping a strand of stray brown hair from his face. “And mom’s are just always worriers like that, I think. My mom’s the same way.”

When he’s asked about his own family, Kyson’s eyes soften, and his smile widens just a tiny bit.

“Well, me and my mom have always been close… I most of my looks from her.” He chuckled softly. “She’s florist, works with garden stuff too. As my Dad… he’s rough around the edges at times, but he has a good heart. Keeps our family together. And I’m a middle child in a big family, so that’s always lovely.” He laughs genuinely at that.

“Your mom’s a florist, huh? That’s a cool job. Always kind of envied people with green thumbs. Not that it’s easy to get anything to grow in Arizona weather.”

Michael’s eyes widen at Kyson’s invitation. “Oh, wow, you mean it?” He smiles at Kyson, a bit in disbelief. “I’ll ask my mom if she’d be interested! I’m sure she’d be happy to have a chance to get to know more people in town. And— I mean you know how moms are— she’d be happy to know I made a friend,” he speaks cautiously, hoping that he wasn’t jumping to conclusions to say as much.

Maybe we can stay here now,

He shoves his hands into a pockets, nodding and giving a letting shrug at the question. “Yeah, I guess you could say that. My family moved here a few years ago.”

Kyson looked around the boardwalk for a second before glancing back at Michael. “Don’t get weirded out if you catch people staring. We don’t usually get people moving out here a lot.”

He released a huff that sounded like a slight laugh, his smile brightening.

“We ended up moving here on account of my mom having family here.” Michael runs a hand through his hair as he talks. “We’ve never been up here before, though, hence my… generally confused expression when you found me. This place seems interesting, though. And coming here got us out of Arizona, which is definitely… definitely good.”

Michael seems to get lost in thought for a second before catching himself, his smile returning to his face and meeting Kyson’s eyes again.

“But yeah, you know, this place does seem a little strange, but it also seems pretty cool, I think? I mean, there’s nothing quite like this back where I’m from, so if anything, it’s a nice change of pace.”

Michael could feel the slight energy shift with the question. It makes sense that most people wouldn’t feel super comfortable talking about their less happy parts of their home’s reputation. He moved to change the subject.

𝕬h, that I do…Secrets are more fun that way, aren’t they? When they have to come out all on their own…Just ‘cause you got these things you don’t understand now doesn’t mean you can’t-and won’t. I guarantee it…Everything will be become clear in time but you gotta wait for it, Michael. I promise you it’ll be worth it…the wait-
