What am I doing anymore?

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:

Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th

Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad

Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion

Come back on the 18th and check in

Don’t:

Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)

Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.

Open the app or website (including specific blogs)

Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)

Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

A former staff engineer, who recently left Tumblr and asked to remain anonymous for professional reasons, tells Vox that the NSFW ban was “in the works for about six months as an official project,” adding that it was given additional resources and named “Project X” in September, shortly before it was announced to the rest of the company at an all-hands meeting. “[The NSFW ban] was going to happen anyway,” the former engineer told me. “Verizon pushed it out the door after the child pornography thing and made the deadline sooner,” but the real problem was always that Verizon couldn’t sell ads next to porn.

Porn on Tumblr is something Verizon needs to wipe out if it’s going to make any money off what it thinks is actually valuable about the platform — enormous fandom and social justice communities that, just before the Verizon acquisition, Khalaf was insisting the staff figure out how to better monetize.

The white and red ducati revs her engine from in front of Bo’s house. She was starting to get impatient. What was taking him so long? The holoform sits back on the idling motorcycle of her alternate form. “You take more time to get ready than me!” She teases.

Holding up within its 'impenetrable walls’ against these… freaks.” He looked down at the cooling walker he’d killed minutes ago and gave it a light tap with his foot. “Seriously, that sounds like a survivor’s dream. Are they cannibals or something?” He was wary now… sure, they’d been looking for it, but had no real information. If they were dangerous, then all of this had been for nothing.

“They didn’t have any room left. Believe me, I woulda stayed there if I could.” He couldn’t lie about that. The fact that he couldn’t go in disappointed him, but he was happy with what he got. Hesitation came to him as he elaborated. “I don’t think they were. I.. I had two kids with me. I was at least able t’.. convince them to let’m in. They… gave me some supplies when I did.” There was a duffel bag he was holding on his shoulder.

He chuckled. “My favorite gun. Okay, so I made it during my whole “.50 cal” phase… everything was .50 cal… ugh, so embarrassing. Anyways, I ended up making this beastly eight barrel minigun with two 150 round drums on either side controlled by a switch to draw from one or the other, one with regular rounds and the other with explosive tipped. So much fucking recoil on that hefty bitch I had to put a tripod on the back end, another mount on the front, and a specialized grip just to hold it properly.” Bo grinned wickedly. “I love Betsy to bits… although it’s mostly for show or fun, not much for actual combat. Too bulky, barrel’s got a slow spin time so it doesn’t fly off, and it jams like a motherfucker.”

Viper stood quietly, listening to him talk before giving a laugh. “I might be in love with that gun by you just talking about it. Because that sounds like an wonderful thing. You have got to let me meet Betsy sometime.” She said with a delighted tone in her voice. She loved guns after all. “You always have your favorite guns. Or knives…Or anything that kills.”
