As painful as it was to see Simon break up with Wille, I think that, at this point in the storyline, it was the best thing to do for Simonâs own mental health. Iâve seen people criticize him for âabandoning Wille,â but you have to remember that Simon is very much also affected by the situation. Heâs not there solely to provide comfort for Wille. He has his own mental health to worry about and it would not be healthy for him to prioritize Willeâs over his own.
One of my favourite things that this show avoided was having the typical one person is out, the other is not, and the one who is out forces the other to come out when theyâre clearly not ready. I absolutely loved that Simon made it very clear he was not upset with Wille for being unable to come out. Him reassuring Wille that he can take all the time he needs and that he respects it is literally so important, because even though he wonât let himself be a part of it, he wants Wille to know that he doesnât begrudge him for it.
Obviously we all want them to get back together one day, and I believe they will, but Iâm so glad we didnât have to suffer through a scene of Simon begging Wille to come out, or saying that if he didnât, theyâd be over. I think Simon knows Wille has the strength to do it himself, but heâs just not there yet, and until he is, Simon had to put himself first and take a step back. He handled the situation with great maturity and grace. You can see in the soft way he looked at Wille in the final scene and the way he hugged him back that just because they wonât be together doesnât mean Simon wonât still be there for him in some way. I hope they continue to talk while Wille is away for Christmas, even if itâs just as friends (for now).
