if we can set aside attachment discourse for a moment (please) i think the jedi marriage prohibition makes sense in a “please don’t enter a complex legal, financial, social, and in some cases religious contract, the specifics of which vary wildly depending on planet and culture” way. the single jedi with a law degree does not have time to draft everyone’s prenups to prevent the whole order from getting sued
#we could create so many interesting new problems if we ignore romance and make it about contracts generally#jedi prohibition on getting a loan. jedi prohibition on signing a waiver before bungee jumping. etc
"Qui-Gon didn't try to buy Anakin or the engine because there wasn't anyone in town who offered a credit exchange service" wrong. Qui-Gon gambled for Anakin under the table because after dealing with the Cyrkon Delinquency of 24850, Master Olobi, Esq, has personally promised to hang by the the toes from the highest tower of the Temple for one week any Jedi who generates any trackable legal transaction or obligation between the Order and the Hutts.
Nothing like holding my love
Two World Cup finalists from opposing teams in this fucking picture, this sport isn't real
Context for anyone who is wondering: Lamine Yamal's parents won an UNICEF raffle for a charity photoshoot in which Barça players posed with kids, and 5 month old Lamine happened to get 20yo Messi. Which is like. Literally insane
Honestly surprised that Lucy Hebron doesn't get more attention in media focusing on the Sherlock Holmes extended universe.
Like, you're born in Atlanta Georgia sometime in the 1880s. Your mother is a white English immigrant. Your father is an African American lawyer who has managed to become fairly wealthy off his practice.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle claims that your parents were married, but they almost certainly weren't or, if they were, they probably had to go elsewhere to get married and their marriage wouldn't have been recognised in Georgia. Realistically, they were facing huge amounts of prejudice that are only increased when you are born.
(Your mother openly says, in front of you when you're older, that it is a “great misfortune” that you were born with darker skin than even your father.)
Then disaster strikes. Your father dies. Your mother can't stand to stay in America without him and returns to England.
She does not take you with her. She says this is because of your health. It's just way healthier for you to stay where you are, as a parentless mixed race child in the Jim Crow era American South. Rather than going with your only living relative to England (which, while obviously still very racist, at least doesn't have any actual laws against people like you existing).
Your mother meets a new man. A merchant. He's white. She signs over all your father's money and investments to him when they marry. She doesn't tell him about you. She's worried he wouldn't understand. She later explains that this was a major ordeal for her. That she struggled in vain to resist the urge to send for you for three years, until it got too much to bear.
So now you live in England. In a cottage on the estate that was partly paid for by your father's money.
You're not allowed to leave the cottage, because if anyone sees you outside in the daylight then they might find out that you're black. While you're in the cottage, even (apparently) at nighttime, you are made to wear long gloves and a fucking mask, so that nobody can accidentally look through the window and find out that you're black.
Your mother visits you occasionally. She tells you that you're her “own girlie and mother's pet” whether you're “dark or fair”. When her husband comes to see what's going on, you and your nurse get shoved out the back door so he won't see you and find out that you're black.
Unfortunately, your stepfather has noticed that his wife keeps randomly going off in the middle of the night to visit a mysterious cottage where the only inhabitant seem to be a weirdly secretive servant woman and a strange masked figure, and has decided that something Fucked Up is going on.
So he goes to consult the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes. Normally, the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes can work this kind of shit out in his sleep, but unfortunately your family is so dysfunctional that you override his borderline magical deduction abilities, and the best theory he can come up with is either “secret affair” or “weirdly convoluted blackmail scheme”.
Fortunately however, this does lead to your stepfather eventually meeting you and finding out who you are. Including the fact that you're black.
Turns out he's fine with it.
Like completely. Quite possibly more so than your own mother is. Turns out there was no need for the traumatic abandonment, the years of separation and then the even more traumatic being forced to live like The Man In The Iron Mask in a cottage in the middle of nowhere.
Nope. Turns out you could have been allowed to go outside in daylight this entire time. You all go back to the big house (that was paid for in part with your father's investments) together and we never find out what happens to you.
I mean… what. The. Fuck.
Like, I'm not expecting Sir Arthur CD to have written an entire child psychology textbook to go with what was meant to be a fun little short story about racial tolerance, but holy shit.
I want a book about teenage Lucy Hebron at boarding school dealing with all the fucked up shit that went on in her childhood whilst also solving mysteries with the help of correspondence from her friend and mentor Sherlock Holmes. I want that shit yesterday.
YOU. YOU understand my vision.
START WRITING THE FICS.

Truly how IS Sporty Spice the only straight one
my favorite comprehensible math fact is that 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + 1/32... all the way on, forever, equals exactly 2. and i love it because it sounds totally mystical and then you see the proof for it and its just like a little drawing that makes you go, oh, right, duh. like all you need is a square that you have decided has an area of 2, and then you just start coloring in.
i see what you're referring to, but that "never get that final block in place" thing is what infinity is for. the infinity is kind of for the moment when you do the final thing in a never ending pattern. its the last number. there is no last number. its there. you can see it. you cannot get there. but what if you did? then you'd be at two. you are at two. you measure the corners of your house. its a little bigger on the inside than the out. hm.
uh oh.
we dont talk about the ramanujan sum in this house. that is an incomprehensible math fact and the way that it repeatedly pops up in high level physics is proof that there is something wrong with our high level physics, or something wrong with the idea of addition itself. it scares me. genuinely.
a selection of very extremely Good lines from the queen’s thief novels
you shot the ambassador? / YOU GAVE ME THE GUN
if i live through this day and i am not king then every sovereign of the continent who betrayed me will wake choking on their own blood. i say it three times. it will be so. it will be so. it will be so.
“I'll be your minister--" / "Of the exchequer? You'd rob me blind." / “I would never steal from you," he'd said hotly. / “Oh? Where is my tourmaline necklace? Where are my missing earrings?" / “That necklace was hideous. It was the only way to keep you from wearing it." / “My earrings?" / “What earrings?”
if i am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make up my mind for me
the entire scene where eugenides reveals he knew everything to the people who plotted against him and mocked his missing hand and dismantles everything they’ve worked for while lying down in his wife’s nightgown
the entire moonlit confession scene from book 2 where eugenides gives attolia three knives and tells her she can try to kill him but he loves her and wants her to know that even as he’s bargaining a marriage from her to stop a war
feel free add more if i’m forgetting some … these books are full of gems actually
“rare the man whose gods answer him”
sounis had been thinking of ambiades. “he would have been a better man under better circumstances.” / gen looked at him. “true enough,” he said. “but does a good man let his circumstances determine his character?”
“they will not cross me, but they won’t love me, either. i am not eddis. people do not hand me their hearts.” / “sounis wondered. he would have given eugenides his heart on a toothpick, if asked.” !!!!!
gen vs any horse ever
“you didn’t warn the magus, either.” / “he did fine.” / “and you did not warn your queen.” / “she would have led the riot.”
All I wanted to do was lie in the dry grass with my feet in a ditch forever. I could be a convenient sort of milemarker, I thought. Get to the thief and you know you're halfway to Methana.
“There are a lot of things a person with two hands couldn't steal," Eddis said. / "So?" / "If it's impossible to steal them with two hands, it's no more impossible to steal them with one. Steal peace, Eugenides. Steal me some time.”
“From shadow queen to puppet queen in one rule," he whispered. "That's very impressive. When he rules your country and he tells you he loves you, I hope you believe him."
“Treachery," said the Mede. / "Diplomacy," said Attolia, "in my own name.” !!!!!!!!
“One of us might be assassinated and then my heir will be king. Don't give up hope just because chances are slim." / "For the assassination or the heir, your majesty?” (Look at little Costis go!!)
What kind of man, he wondered, referred to himself as “safely dead”?”
Phresine folded her hands in her lap and looked pleasent and unhelpful

So um… THE VOID DECK is now available on my website. 😬
Check it out here
Thank you for all of your support, friends! I don’t think I ever would have made it here without the kind words and encouragement from you all.
There’s still so much more ahead, but for now I just want to say thank you. 💛
A few notes…
International shipping is unfortunately pretty pricy for some locations these days (I’m shipping from MI, USA), I am looking for more affordable options but I am already using a number of the biggest carriers so this is the best I can get right now.
If you’re in the SE Michigan area, you may see me and the voids at some markets and shows in the area this fall! If you’d like me to attend a specific event - let me know! I’m still filling out the schedule 😉
And finally, if you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out!
if both teams in the final failed to beat you in 90min you should be crowned the honorary world cup champion. congratulations cabo verde 🥳
one of my favorite random little details in King of Attolia is the conspiracy room. a random little room in the palace, too small and unfurnished to gather in, too fancy and out-of-the-way to use for storage--there's really nothing it's good for and no one's ever there, so of course people end up using it for clandestine little meetings. and there just happens to be a decorative latticework ceiling :) with an empty space above it :) big enough for someone to hide in :)
it's just such clever architecture/rulership/rulership mediated through architecture. we can't hope to stop nobles from having illicit meetings to discuss their treasonous conspiracies, but we can subtly encourage them to do it somewhere we can eavesdrop :)
