âOn Friday, July 27, the full moon passed through the shadow of the Earth for 103 minutes. It was the longest âblood moonâ lunar eclipse of the century, as the moon turned red in the shadow of the Earth for nearly two hours.â
Now we finally know what Ancient Greek music sounded like
In 1932, the musicologist Wilfrid Perrett reported to an audience at the Royal Musical Association in London the words of an unnamed professor of Greek with musical leanings: âNobody has ever made head or tail of ancient Greek music, and nobody ever will. That way madness lies.â
Indeed, ancient Greek music has long posed a maddening enigma. Yet music was ubiquitous in classical Greece, with most of the poetry from around 750BC to 350BC â the songs of Homer, Sappho, and others â composed and performed as sung music, sometimes accompanied by dance. Literary texts provide abundant and highly specific details about the notes, scales, effects, and instruments used. The lyre was a common feature, along with the popular aulos, two double-reed pipes played simultaneously by a single performer so as to sound like two powerful oboes played in concert.
Despite this wealth of information, the sense and sound of ancient Greek music has proved incredibly elusive. Read more.

Could you please reblog this if you are a witch who isnât Wiccan?
Basically, âcan I do witchcraft with this?â is the next question I ask myself about any new object, after âcan I wear it on my head?â and âcan I eat it?â

Iâve been looking into spells and sigils and such, and part of me wants to believe they work but the other part of me is stuck in the ways of âmagic isnât real and it wonât ever be realâ Iâm stuck
So my niece said to me very kindly âAunt Tea, you know that a lot of people donât believe witchcraft is real.âÂ
And I said âYes, but they make the best witches.â
Weâre raised in cultures that place focus on belief but witchcraft isnât about believing. Itâs about doing. The best witches Iâve known havenât necessarily been those whoâve sat around and told me, misty eyed, how they love the goddess or enthused about fairies.Â
No, the best have been those who pragmatically set up altars and did rituals, not because they believed, but because it worked. Sometimes they were trying to prove it wouldnât work. That this witchcraft stuff would have no affect on reality. Except it did. So they kept doingâŚbecause it worked.Â
They often become very knowledgeable witches because they get caught up in research. Witchcraft becomes and experiment as they work to find the best techniques. They look into Ceremonial Magic, Hermetic Quabalah, Thelema and other systems the same way a scientist pursues research.Â
Sometimes I think magic works for them because it knows it has to. If it stops, then theyâll stop. And the magic wants to keep itself going.Â
Some of my biggest magic has been at the times in my life where I was holding my hands over my ears and screaming NOPE NOPE NOPE.
I also had an in between period of âhahah, well, it only appears to work because something something the subconscious, nothing mysterious about it a all, its just psychology!â
And then you do some kind of really externally focused spell, because, hahah, itâs not like it will WORK anyway, soâ
And then things work a lot of the time and youâre like,Â
WELP. maybe i should just stop talking shit.
SOMEONE EXPLAINED MY BELIEF IN SPELLS EXPERIMENT IN A FRIENDLY DISCUSSIONAL WAY. AND WHY I DONT FOCUS ON BELIEF AT ALL IN MY PRACTICE. *SCREAMS*
*as an aside, thelema, ceremonial and all that dodads up there are no goes for me. Folk magic and diy magic (lil chaos magic) have been my wheelhouse
So... fidget spinner magic anyone?
So I finally gave in and got myself one of those spinning fidget things because clearly i donât have enough stuff to fiddle with, and Iâve been sitting here twiddling it for a while and...just... so many potential magical applications, you guys, like...
Sigil charging - spin it over, or rest it on, a sigil to charge it
Cleansing - spin anti-clockwise to cleanse or ârewindâ effects on objects
Simple Divining - mark one limb (or side or whatever theyâre called) of the spinner and write options, numbers, or letters on a piece of paper. Rest the spinner on the paper, spin, and note where the marked part stops.Â
If used for anxiety, anoint the centre with lavender oil for calming, for example. Or rosemary oil if you use it to help you focus. And/or draw a sigil or rune in the centre for the same sort of thing
Endless possibilities, right? Thoughts? Additions?

05/17/2017 - I went to the Yale University Art Gallery and saw some Real Nice pots. The tiny oinochoai and the maenad beating the shit out of some satyr dude with her thyrsus are my faves.
Scholars believe miniature wine jugs, like the choes shown above, were presented to children at age three or four by their parents during the Anthesteria, and that upon this sacred occasion the children would taste their first drops of wine. This wasnât quite as unhealthy as it sounds to modern people, because wine was typically diluted with 3 or more parts water per serving. It was such an important event in the spiritual life of a child that a miniature chous was often placed in childrenâs graves.Â
Magic Tip: Be specific in your correspondences.
I feel like one major weakness that many magic practitioners donât realize when making correspondences is that they arenât specific.Â
Yes, basil and rosemary are both good for protection. But what kind of money spells? What kind of protections?Â
A protection could work by hiding you, by filtering things out, by being an impenetrable wall, by dispelling negative energies. And if you were to pick from one or two of those- you could still be even more specific.Â
How does it become an impenetrable wall? Is it the bricks themselves, or is it the cement that holds it together?Â
And even then-how good is the cement? Would rosemaryâs cement work better?Â
Donât just stop there- consider the different forms of the material.Â
Is dried basil better at certain things then fresh basil? How does it act in a potion, in an oil, in a tincture?Â
Be specific in making your correspondences to truly find out the differences between materials. It is pointless to have a list of 50 different herbs for a purpose if you do not know the different ways they carry out that purpose, because you cannot combine them to maximize their effects.Â
