Nonono, no one had idea he lived in the cathedral. At the gossip level, his habitat was assumed to cover the entire city.
And it's honestly even funnier
Like, you have all those nightmarish creatures all over the city:
moving stone statues of knights,
giant iron-plated spiders,
swarms of fiends with blood-sight-activated frenzy,
hives of exploding giant ticks (if memory serves),
centaurian hybrids of crab and humanoid,
creatures walking around and wailing like a distressed human (the weakest organism in local ecosystem) to lure something (other nightmarish creatures) into its maw,
oversized fucked-up gothy griffins,
oversized predatory porcupines,
rocks alternating between perfect stealth camouflage and roaring+nibbling on whatever,
rotting-yet-alive giant canids,
and so bloody many others.
All of those observed, described, known for their habitats, territories, patterns of behavior, abilities and habits. All of those, essentially, subjected to scientific observation.
And then there's one scrawny human boy who supposedly lives somewhere in the city and half humans go "nah that's not realistic" and the other half go "if he's real then he's completely crazy and unpredictable". Territorial set of armor full of living darkness? Normal. Feral kid living somewhere there? Impossible. No one knows where he lives, for all intents and purposes his habitat is entire city, no one knows his patterns, no one knows his abilities, no one knows how he stays alive.
He's essentially the only cryptid / urban legend in the city full of things that in any other situation would be cryptids instead.
And then he goes talk with people and he's somehow even more crazy than they assumed.
