The Super Jumbo

One of the biggest hot and high airports is Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport in South Africa. Joburg is in fact, so hot and high, that the take off conditions were a major driving factor in the aircraft purchasing decisions of South African Airways.

Singapore Airlines used to operate a route they dubbed “The Capital Express”. It was a four times weekly service from Singapore to Canberra, Australia, and then onwards to Wellington, New Zealand. Due to Wellington’s short runway and high winds, a direct flight to Singapore was not possible, as it was not possible to take off with enough fuel needed to get to Singapore.

ANA launched their direct flight from Tokyo to Perth today, and the return flight, NH882 is already in the skies on the way back to Tokyo! But this isn’t the first time there has been a direct air link between Perth and Japan. Qantas used to fly a direct route between the two cities using the Boeing 767, but this was scrapped in 2010 due to unprofitability and the aging fleet.

A study conducted in 2012 ascertained that Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport would not be able to cope with air traffic at it’s current rate of increase by 2030.

It is physically impossible to open the door of an aircraft in flight. The doors are designed to open inwards, and when closed, they fit into a “plug” opening in the fuselage. When the aircraft is pressurised during the climb, the pressure inside the plane forces the door further into the frame, making it snug within the opening and impossible to open.

Departed half an hour late and landed 20 minutes early!

I don’t know why, but I find this incredibly cool. This is Qatar Airways QR904, cruising at a calibrated attitude of 39,500 feet enroute from Doha to Melbourne. I saw it on FlightRadar24 and wondered if I would be able to see it from the ground (since a lot of the time, you either can’t see planes flying at high cruising, or they’re hard to spot). So I wandered out into my backyard, and there it was, plain as day, an A388 flooring along at cruising. I just wanted to share it, because I really did think that was pretty cool! Safe travels QR904!
