As she is right now, I can't stand Eloise, but she's improved from season 1. She's not wrong about women becoming property when they get married; even when they absolutely love each other, even when the man respects that woman more than anyone else on Earth, even when he supports all of her interests and even helps her pursue them, even when he gives her all of the freedom to live her own life and makes her the happiest woman in the world, when it comes down to it, by law, she is his property. She can't own land that wasn't passed down to her by her father, her husband or her son, she can't own her own business, have her own bank account, pursue further education without his permission, etc. Truly, finding the perfect husband was the only way women could have any power in that society and that's where Eloise is wrong: women of the social level of the Bridgertons, when they got married to the right men, became the most powerful, most free women in society (especially if they became a widower on the level of Lady Danbury).
Let's take Hyacinth's interests, for example: planning the perfect ball could bring prestige to an entire family, and that's a power only the woman holds. Embroidery, which she loves to mock, is art, and a great way for women to express their talents and their feelings into something beautiful, that is admired by everyone. Learning music, be it voice or an instrument, develops higher cognitive skills, essentially making people smarter and more disciplined. Etiquette will guarantee that you are well liked by other people, leading you to being treated better, having better connections and finding said perfect husband; for example, Eloise doesn't admire women, she pities them while envying men, but if she had more respect for women and tried to understand anything of their world she would know that, if she was nicer to her siblings, maybe she would get permission from Anthony to travel the world with Collin, like she wanted to do.
And then people come and say that she's a "strong, independent woman who don't need no man" and I'm like... she's literally not?! She's 100% dependent on Anthony. She doesn't have her own house, her own money, her own skills, her own nothing. She doesn't know how to do anything: she can't cook, she can't sew, she can't clean, she can't organise. If she runs away tomorrow to live her own life and be independent, she's gonna starve on the streets, because she has no abilities that could help her provide for herself or to survive. She's useless, because she thinks the only useful life skill is reading about politics (which she should, but there's WAY more that she needs to know to become truly independent). And most men from the gentry also aren't as independent as she thinks; if you take her own siblings, for example, only Anthony and Collin have their own jobs and earn their own income (even though Collin still gets helped by Anthony). Benedict lives off of the Bridgerton fortune, and he has the privilege to because they are particularly rich, but if tomorrow they're bankrupt he's fucked, because he has no actual skills for the real world (and he's gonna have to find a way to actually sel his art, so even Benedict has a better chance than her. Anthony has financial skills, he could work at a bank, as an accountant or with trade, since his wife is Indian. Collin and Penelope both have their own, large enough income as published writers, they would be fine. Daphne and Francesca are already married off to wealthy men and wouldn't be affected. Gregory and Hyacinth are too young to work anyways, so they would be cared for by their siblings, likely Daphne. And what would Eloise do? She would have to beg for one of her siblings with an income to take care of her, because she has no profitable skills.
