The first thing Matt notices, blinking himself out of the stupor, is a few, miniscule drops of blood on the floor. Not quite aligned with his eyeline, but on the edges of it; he’d missed it if it experience hadn’t trained him to pick out crimson where others would note the furniture.

He tries to shift, land his feet to hold his weight as his knees hover just above the neat wooden floorboards, and the stable, constant ache digging into his wrists pierces.
