“I’m sure,” he replied, sarcasm tinting his words. “Nothing has changed.” A lie, of course, but he certainly wasn’t foolish enough to disclose the unnecessary to his enemy.

“Now, let’s try again.” Like a puppet on erratic strings, he stepped forward with his forced, unnatural movements, just a step, just a hint so that he could see every breath, every twitch of discomfort. “Tell me about what has happened in my absence. It’s best I’m not left in the dark.”

“My position hasn’t changed,” he said, referring to his choice to protect humanity. “You’re wasting your time if that’s what you’re here for.”

“Well then, do tell me what has changed with you. I’ve missed you, you know.”

"Something you might have been involved in?" His copycat wouldn’t have commented if it wasn’t relevant to him on some level. He knew Mephiles existed once in a time that Shadow had no memory of. It wasn’t that much of a stretch to assume this odd sensation could be linked to that. It felt as if something were trying to be remembered, yet could not possibly be achieved. It was…disconcerting.

"I can assure you," he said with honest-to-goodness cheer. "Your lack of memory was not my doing."

"I can’t explain it, but whenever I visit Soleanna, I get this odd feeling of…deja vu. Even when I’d just visited it for the first time. It’s fleeting, but odd."

"I hope you haven’t gotten too soft since I’ve been away. I wouldn’t want to have to retrain you when you succumb to servitude with me.” The shoes that matched Shadow’s stepped closer to him, eyes narrowed as he looked the ultimate lifeform up and down.

Shadow scoffed, face already settling into a scowl. “Your jokes aren’t very funny.” His stance was firm, clearly on-guard. 

"Tell me, has anything been happening lately to keep your combat skills up? Or will that need to be relearned as well?"

Nothing was ever easy with him.
